Has anyone had problems with their Detroit Speed Selecta-speed wiper kit. I bought the 68 kit from Classic Industries. I used it about three times and it worked fine. Then it started doing an odd thing where it would slowly creep up the window. I would have to fire them up to reposition them. Then they just quit working altogether. I contacted Detroit Speed and they said there had been a problem and I could send it in to have the motor fixed and that they were coming out with a new set up. I asked if I could wait until show season was over to send it, no problem. I recontacted them later also after the new updated version is out I guess with no luck. These kits are not cheap or I would just pick up another. Any suggestions would help. I have their mini tubs, electric headlight doors, and other items. Disappointed it there response. Ye I have had them for a while as the car was being built but less than a hour run time is definitely a problem. If anyone has had the problem or knows what motor they used in their kit that I could change out? Maybe they will still help out. Keith Goslin is whom I have contacted.

I think that's the problem. I called and spoke with Keith about another issue and he wasn't very prompt. A whole day gone by and he couldn't complete the actions he said he would do,

The old motors are discontinued, as in can't get them anymore from anywhere, at all.
I had one that was truly intermittent, as in would work whenever it felt like it. That ended up being a problem with the plug and the receiver for the plug. I cheated it and it worked for a while and then late last summer it started the ghost operation described in the OP. We are replacing it this winter, the wiring and switch is all different as well.

Check with Brian Nutter (email:

I have a problem with mine where occasionally they go half way on start up. Sometimes just a stutter, sometimes a full sweep, but usually about half way. Very strange

They were used in 1981 Chevy and GMC Pickups & S10's and some passenger cars like the small Cadillacs. Probably a lot of other GM cars of that era too. I think my 1984 Chevy pickup had that motor too.
If these are used/rebuilt units, the issue we used to have on our farm trucks were on the circuit board under the black cover. The board connects to the harness plug via 4 or 5 small strips of copper. You can see them best from the back side of the circuit board.
When you think about it, the harness plugs into the socket on the motor, as the car hits bumps, the harness is flopping up and down, the plug get's wiggled up and down too. This flexes the copper contact strips which tries to wiggle the circuit board. The board is screwed down to the wiper housing. The contact strips will eventually tear loose at the solder joints and cause intermittent problems with operation. You have to look VERY closely at the solder joints to see the damage. The contact strips are still plugged in, but the solder will be cracked all the way around it. They can be carefully re-soldered and work again. Add a little extra solder to help it stay. Also the extra flux helps the solder fill back in. There are replacement boards available too.
I used to re-solder the contacts on the board, then tie wrap the harness to the wiper motor near the plug to reduce the tugging on the plug.
I heard the early DSE kits had poor switches, they have better ones now.

Hmmm, I bought the DSE kit a couple of years ago and I am now just getting around to installing it. Main problem was the size of the switch thread and how it fit into the dash using the factory knob. I have those problems solved. I may take the back cover off and check the solder joints before I install it.

Thanks Mr. Pozzi
I think you got me on the right track. Now I just have to find out what circuit board I have. There seems to be a couple. I will find part numbers when I take it out. Looks like about. 30-50 fix. Cross my fingers. I cant afford another $400 $500 for wipers. That would be at least $800 for wiper motors?????

You can probably re-solder yours if you are careful.
