Chromoly or aluminum driveshaft?

Based on cost and turn-around availability, I'm stuck on the decision to get a 3.5" aluminum shaft from shaftmasters or the 3.0 chromoly from Strange. Any advice?

My car will be a 600-750hp, is a 6 speed, 3.89 gears, street/strip/autocross

Where you able to get a horsepower rating on each Driveshaft? If the aluminum is rated for your particular application I would select the aluminum driveshaft. Also, I would look into 1350 ujoints and the respective slip and pinion yokes with that horsepower. If you elect to use the bigger ujoints let the driveshaft maker provide the slip yoke and balance the driveshaft and yoke as an unit.

I would find out the HP rating of each as stated and make the decision based on that. I got my 3" aluminum shaft from Shaftmasters and was please with the work and turnaround. Mine was based on price and location as Shaftmasters is 30min from me. I had them install my yoke with 1350 u-joints at both ends.

Shaftmasters told be the aluminum is rated with torque pound feet at 5,036 torsional yield. What does that really mean? Does shaftmaster used forged yokes (ears)


Does/can the yoke be balanced? I have a Sonnax chromoly piece.

Either one will be suitable for your application. Obviously the smaller one will help with exhaust clearance if that's a concern.. The aluminum is a little lighter.
The yokes don't need to be balanced, as they are of minimal concern since they're close to the pivots. The sonnax ones are good though, we use them on everything.

I decided on Inland Empire. I went with their 3.5" and provided my own Sonnax Yoke. They told me it should be good for 900hp.
