Been really busy with the vega lately. got the 5.3 running. tore into it again removed the steering column in order to install electric power steering. There is not any room at all in the vega for a conventional power steering pump. so I decided to pull a steering column from a 2007 equinox took the whole thing. got it all mounted up. need to make the steering shaft and need to wire it. There is a seller on ebay that makes control boxes for the electric columns and you can fine tune the amount of assistance to your liking with the turn of a knob.
A few things:
I think us LS guys can take the vss signal from the computer and run it to the column without the need of the controller and it should give the proper signal to automatically vary the assistance depending on the vss. (full assistance when parking or moving slow and reduced assistance when travelling at speed on the highway. Trying to figure this part out still before I order the controller.
Because the rest of my interior is modern look. I did not hack up the column whatsoever. I just clocked the motor a little higher in the dash area and modified my steering column mount on the car to use the entire equinox column including the multifunction stalk, wiper stalk and steering wheel.
Its very crammed in a VEGA for space. if I made it work then I'm sure you guys with larger cars wouldn't have a problem fitting an EPAS column to your vehicles.
Now I am on to wiring the cruise control, wipers, washer, turn signal, hazards, and horn. Just wondering if someone with access to wiring diagrams and/or pinouts would be willing to help me out. Need to find the pinouts for the wires coming from the column to wire it up.
Another thing if you have a LS swap and are wanting to do this I recommend the equinox or torrent steering columns. The wheel on the 2007s is actually really nice assuming it works with your interior. The cruise control and audio controls are right on the wheel. If you have a DBW throttle body then the cruise control is a 4 wire hookup from what I can tell.
thanks and any help is appreciated. any questions feel free to ask or send a pm
