Guess I will start a thread on my build, I had it in vintage-mustang but those guys get mad that the car will have bigger than 15" wheels lol
Now this wont be like most on here. I will not have $10,000 suspension. Or $3,000 wheels. I cannot afford any of that stuff. I am building the car the be fun on the street and handle the best it can on the track the way it will be set.
But I will be doing all the work my self and doing it on a budget.
Lets gets started.
I bought this car from my Uncle after interest was lost and space ran out.
He had started a Vintage class Trans-Am racecar. Is was being built to be a copy of Walt Hane ( eps-hane.com ) 66 track car.
They started with a stock 66 v8/3 speed car with great bones. Not much rust, and very straight.
It was acid dipped. and Fully stitchwelded. Every seam and crack has now been welded. The rear was tubbed to the frame rails and I will run as wide of a tire as I can. The front fender had a 1.5 flair added.
Then the Interior got a 10 point cage with driver door bar. Remember this was going to be a actual competitive race.
This was all done between 1999 and 2001ish..... and the car sat ever since.
Now here is where my part starts. I bought the car in 2013 and had no money or time. Now I have more time, but still not a lot of money. hahaha
Here is the how it sat.

With the car sitting for so long, there was some surface rust. The entire inside, under, trunk, bay, etc was all sprayed with epoxy but not the roof, doors, fenders,
So I had to start allover on body work. The body work that was done A: had rust under it B: was not done well.

After I completed all the main body work I got the car in full prime. Now wishing I had done done some rear fender flares, closed in the cowl vents, and shaved the drip rails...... But im a little to far along and itching to get the car done.

In the mean time I was on the hunt for a good drivetrain.
found this 1989 5.0 wrecked for $600 running and driving. I pulled the engine and trans, sold the rest for $800 got a free engine and trans and made $200. Was a good deal!

I pulled the motor apart to see how it looked, and was surprised to see it not is bad shape. I have decided to build the top end and go through everything, so I disassembled and took to my machine shop.

While the motor is off getting cleaned up, I got the engine bay painted. I used Summit racing chassis coat. Came out pretty good. the stuff is very thin and watery, gotta be careful spraying.

Then I got my torque boxes installed. What a giant pain in the ass. You would like by now someone would make a set that fits....... after hours of grinding and bangin with a BFH I got them in and welded up.

Pulled all the suspension off to pain the underside. Now I wanted to used raptor liner, but I am not putting a 4-link out of the question down the road and wanted something that was easily cleaned off for welding and easily put back on after im done. I am not quite finished with what I am doing under there, so I decided to do the black chassis coat as its easy to take off and respray anytime.

Before putting the front suspension back on I gave it a little color. I used Duplicolor hammertone. Which is what il use on the cage aswell.

A Ron Francis standalone harness for the EFI. I am going to use a speedway 20 circuit harness for the car simple and easy!

And a Fuel tank from Rhodes racecars. I know they are not cetified, but ir was the best deal out there for a direct fit tank. Alum, 22 gal. AN fittings, sending unit. Way better than a stock replacement.

I have been struggling to find a color for the car. I originally wanted to do Flat White. But that just doesn't show much. From a distance it just looks white.
After a lot of thinking I got hooked on Corvette Laguna Blue.

I am Getting the car blocked out now. and hopefully will spray in the next few weeks. I sill have a lot of prep work on the doors and fenders and would like to spray all together. But I may end up just doing the body and the rest later. I don't have a hood yet or front valance.

Alright! you're moving right along. I agree on VMF, too many snobs on mods. Plus my computer's firewall blocks the majority of the site for some reason.

You're cruising right along! I'm curious how you like that dash bar, looks like it will be a knee knocker! Nice job on the engine score too, I pulled off a similar buy, bought a rolled 94 Bronco with less than 1ook on it. Gave the guy $300 and parted/scrapped the rest for $500 and kept the engine and wheels/tires.

Rhurley and zo6killinsbf, I feel the same way about vmf... Crusty old farts that attack you if you go 17's or higher or you don't use original stuff... I go by 66/93project there... Anyway, love this build and I'll be following here. I've read through both of your builds and they're awesome!

With the Kirkey alum. race seats I used to have it was tight. But they were solid mounted. I am going to go with a track mounted procar or something. I will have a little room. Im 6'4" so its going to be tight no matter what I do

Finally got the Rear end un boxed and checked out. I am honestly pretty impressed. It was the best deal that could be had for housing and axles. I did 31 spline, Big Web, billet ends, jack pad, and fill/drain plug. Looks really good. Just need to decide on a brake kit and Pull the trigger on a center section.

About to start assembling the motor. I need a warm enough day to stand outside and spray the block and clean the machine oil off of it.
Was a stock 1989 Mustang Block, rods, crank. Bored .20 with SP Flat tops. Edlebrock Alum heads were ordered as blanks, he flow tested/matched, ported and polished. They are 60cc but milled down a tiny bit to bump compression up from 10:1 to about 10.8:1. Still want to run pump gas. Then custom ground cam. specs below. I'm following this too! Looks like you've got a great project going. I enjoy watching mustang builds.....but I'm biased!
There is a lot of knowledge on VMF but yeah, some of those guys need to relax. I mostly lurk there because no matter what someone will not like how you did something.
That seems to be the general consensus. lol

Haven't been getting much done. Working 2 jobs eats time.
Got the doors and the Fenders mounted, still waiting on my Cowl hood and front apron.
Passenger door was perfect. Needs a little work, but fit like a dream. Fenders are rough, they have been bare metal for many years.
Driver door had the skin replaced 15 years ago when this project started, and its not going to work to say the least. Looks like the old welds weren't cleaned off enough. So there are lump everywhere. also a big gob of a weld will not allow the door to shut.
So now I am searching for a new driver door.

I really left a lot of it to my machinist. We talked for a long time, told him all the specifics of what the car was going to do and what I needed it to do. And I wanted a high RPM, with good power band. That's what we came up with.

The reason I asked about the cam is that I have always been told if you didn't use a wide lobe centerline cam, it wouldn't have enough manifold vacuum to idle properly. I don't have exp. with efi tuning to know if that can be overcome. My stuff with eec iv is all 114 centerline.

This is true! The EFI can compensate for some but not much. I have nothing running off vacuum to worry about likes brakes, hvac, wipers, etc. The only part that can come into a negative would be the idle. But I am pretty sure I can tune that up no prob.
It is a lot of cam, I am both excited and a little nervous.

hmm, I've always understood that a tight lobecenter favors the low end, but doesn't play nice with EFI. I thought thats part of the reason that most cams spec'd for EFI have pretty wide lobe centers, 110-114.
Have you run this combo though Desktop Dyno or the like to see how it'll perform?

106 will be very choppy at idle. I am wanting to have this thing on the track for some open days and Auto X events. I plan on revving to about 6200-6500 with a tight lope sep. I will ideally be in the powerband from about 2500-5k.
I am hoping I can tune a decent low end into it. But we will see.

Time to get back on this thing.
The Re-pop door I got for the driver side has taken more than a little massaging. But I have the doors and fender lined out.
The Cowl hood is ok, but jut that, its barely ok. I haven't worked with much fiberglass, but this thing will need some work. Had to modify the hood hinges just to fit. And it rubs all over.

Is the Rhino Liner a roll-on or spray on product? I'm probably going to use a bed liner for the bottom of my car. Looks good using it for the front inner-fenders and rear wheel wells too. Thanks for the idea.
Where did you get the front valance? I'm thinking of using this one sold by Branda

Car need a good cut and polish to show the pearl and metallic. But I am very happy with the results so far!!
On to the easy part for me! I love mechanics and assembly........ Body work and paint i have come to hate with a passion, and will never do that again.

First time Poster, Long time Stalker....
I am the "Uncle" that started the build on this car along with Rhurleys' "real" Uncle.
I am so stoked the he is finally finishing this car! Ryan his Sisters and his now grown cousins all helped when they were young taking this car apart. I made Rhurley scrape old seam sealer of the inside of the car after the cage install. I spent a lot of time welding on that car!
He is staying very true to the original build as we wanted to build a race car, but still have it steetable, Therefore a Legit SCCA Vintage A/ Sedan replica fit the bill as it still requires roll up windows, etc. Very excited to watch the project get bolted together!
Pretty funny seeing all the plastic boxes of parts I carefully boxed up and that have been moved more times than i can imagine!

I wish I had made a little fireball brace like you did. Smart idea, since the firewall flexes like crazy with manual brakes.
Have you tried working with NiCopp brake lines? you may never use anything else, ever again.
Which MC are you using?

I've never seen bread, but i have used grease. stuff the hole with bread, or grease, find whatever fits the hole snuggly and grab a hammer. then use the power of science to drive the pilot bearing out. pretty standard shade tree stuff.

Basically you fill the cavity with bread until you cant fit anymore, use something the same diameter as the inside( i used a large bolt and had to shave it down) pound it until the bread is conpressed, add more bread.
Bread can only be compressed so much before it will start pushing what ever is easiest out.

I have tried grease, with no luck. it makes a major mess too......
With grease the punch tool has to be exact, otherwise it squirts out. bread is more forgiving on the tools you may have to use

Im guessing you're referring the rtv on the back...... hahah.
I built the whole motor new. so it has a new rear main, but i cannot for the life of me make the back of the pan not leak, so a little bit of RTV solves the problem.

Looks great. Where'd you get that plate to mount the gauges on? I made my own out of plastic I had lying around.
Regarding the alignment, are you using the stock lower arms? Can't see the older pictures in your thread. If you are, check out these adjustable lowers. I just ordered a set yesterday to replace the arms I have in my build.

Pump sounds better and isnt losing pressure...... the Stanalone harness only had a 14ga wire that ran the entire length of the car.... maybe i was losing voltage.
To try and avoid slosh, i packed the cell full of ATL foam. Not my first choice, but i am minutes away from scrapping this entire tank..... PIECE OF JUNK

So for the track this weekend, i improvised and made a return with dip tube to get under the fuel level.

Brakes suck. Alot
and some other little quirks...

Gee...how did I know that? What I see on the remains of the disk material is a lot of glazing. This is a sign that the clutch was overheating. I suspect the disk overheated to such an extent that the organic friction material started to break down. Hence, we see the result.
Downshifting without RPM matching will wear a clutch out very, very quickly. This is especially true if the course is such that there is a lot of downshifting happening. Organic friction material isn't designed to take a lot of heat and on a road course like you were on, there was no time for the disk to cool down.
Your option is to either learn a different driving style or get a clutch disk with material that is better suited to withstand heat, or both.
Andrew
P.S. Watched the video...and after about the 2:00 minute mark, I can hear the clutch slipping on the 2-3 shift. I suspect it just got worse and worse after that...need to watch the rest of the video...LOL

I was rev matching some and really wasnt driving that hard. I think the heat spot are from driving when the clutch was coming apart....
I did some research and called Mcleod, they had a bad run of material in the disc about 3 years ago, i bought the clutch 2 years ago..... maybe thats why.
I have bought a spec stage 2 to try.... hope i have a different outcome.

Haha Man its been along time.
Got the car back up and running, Put about 1k miles on it last summer. Ran great the whole.
LAst track day of the summer My A9L computer took a dump and locked all the injectors open.......... Filling the cylinders full of fuel and Hydro locking the motor.
Came home and pulled the plugs and cranked it over to get the fuel out..... Fuel arced on the starter solenoid and caught the car on fire.
Major mess, nothing damaged other than hoses and wires.
Fast forward to current day,
I am buttoning up a DART 363 and TKO600 for it.
