View Full Version : LS engine does not fit in 1969 Nova

I wanted to put the motor in today but it didn't go in.
Its a 1969 Chevy Nova with stock frame. The motor is a LS1 from a 2000 Camaro.

The Alternator hits the frame and on the drivers side the holes of the mounts are far apart.
Passenger side is almost in.....

I have stock motor mounts and frame brackets.
The adapter plate is just a simple flat piece of metal.

Please help. What is the solution?

pull the alternator off and see if it drops down on the mounts, looks as if it will. my cousin has a 9 Camaro (same subrame as you) and he had to clearance the frame for the alternator to clear, not sure if he heated it and dinged it in or cut/welded but it definately will not fit as is.

Its def close to dropping in. With the F body alt, you cant push the motor too far back unless you notch the frame. You can either get mounts that move the motor forward or use a 3 position motor plate (dirty dingo double D). I have used these on 3 builds w Fbody acc. The mast pan gives great clearance, but the holley 302-1 pan will be very close to touching crossmember. I have used thick grade 8 flat washers under the engine frame stands in one case for a bit of extra clearance for the Alt & holley pan. Scott

There are 3 different stock accy layouts. Camaro, Corvette, & Truck.
There are also many aftermarket layouts.
Shop around before spending money or cutting stuff.
I would only let accy location determine motor location as a last resort.
You want the motor as far back as practical.
If you have a mind for any competition, set motor as far back as allowed.
