Hi guys been checking this site out for about 2 years and working on my project for one. Its a 85 c10 and my plans fit into no ones genre. I live in eastern NC and people here have a fixation on big shiny rims, not my style. I love the pro-touring style with forged wheels perfect stance and high dollar top notch parts, but cant afford it. So this is my plan build a truck that is fun to drive and still usable as a truck, built on the cheap. I will be using junkyard parts where possible and I'm a craigslidt junky so heres the plan.

1. lower the truck presence is everything
2. more power original 350 is on its last leg
3. redo interior, its loud and drafty
4. fit and finish adjustments

this is the day I brought it home 31's and all
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/Screenshot_20150829210940_edit_144097654-1.jpeg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/2ndroundko/media/Screenshot_2015-08-29-21-09-40_edit_1440976541916.png.jpeg.html)

after flip kit and rear tire change

Got rid of the wide off road wheels and spacers and lowered it
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/20150629_123923-1.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/2ndroundko/media/20150629_123923.jpg.html)

The old 350 I could never get running right. I think it had a bad cam lobe, and burned oil like a 2-stroke lol
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/20150705_201513-1.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/2ndroundko/media/20150705_201513.jpg.html)

So I bought this thing
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/20150704_112028-1.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/2ndroundko/media/20150704_112028.jpg.html)

Its a l31 out of a 98 suburban, cleaned up pretty good I think
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/20150724_131143-1.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/2ndroundko/media/20150724_131143.jpg.html)

In the truck first fire up. cranked on the first try!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/20150801_124022-1.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/2ndroundko/media/20150801_124022.jpg.html)

And a $50 paint job to knock the ugly off
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/20150904_125752-1.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/2ndroundko/media/20150904_125752.jpg.html)

Now dont worry it will be stripped panel by panel and epoxy primed. but don't this look better
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/20150905_074834-1.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/2ndroundko/media/20150905_074834.jpg.html)

In the garage I have, poly control bushings, a junkyard sway bar, brake lines, and pads.

Thanks, finally found a driveshaft today so it will be back on the road this weekend with new front brakes and a sway bar hopefully.

So I got it back on the road about two weeks ago, and it scared the crap out of me. my old tires had dry rotted and side wall flax was crazy after they got warm. So I put my poly bushings in my control arms. Changed my brake pads and hoses. and last but not least i got my impala ss wheels on it!

The wheels had some rash on them so I stripped them

some light sanding with a worn flap wheel took out the factory machining marks

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/11/20151016_143205-1.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/2ndroundko/media/20151016_143205.jpg.html)

next some magic marker guide coat

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/11/20151019_102315-1.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/2ndroundko/media/20151019_102315.jpg.html)

then block sanded from 180 up to 1000 and polished

and the finished product wheel worth the effort IMO

I completely dig what you are doing. I m resurrecting a 79 Dodge, my fuel tank was plastic and cracked, which led to an RCI fuel cell and kind went from there. I occasionally want to tow a trailer and go down the occasional dirt road, not four wheel, just drift the occasional dirt road for fun. These trucks are getting harder to find all the time. I appreciate it - hang in there brother, it is looking good!

Thanks I think the result was well worth the effort.

The offset irks me but Im not sure how I'm going to address it. I plan to get a 3.42 rear out of a tahoe which I think may be a little wider, also I may go with 4x4 or awd axle so I have the factory limited slip in which case I would run 6x5 to 5x5 adapters. either way it will be addressed and faster in the end.

As of right now I have the bed and front clip off while building the engine and doing so rust repair. While it is disassembled I want to add some stronger cross members and possible some cross bracing across the frame between the leaf springs. This brings me to my question I know that triangles are known to be the strongest shape. A X-shaped brace causes conflict with my diff. Then again a A-shaped brace works, but I'm concerned it wont be as strong as the X-shaped brace.

Since my last update, I blew my motor (locked it up), deconstructed the body, did sheet metal repair, and rebuilt the engine. all done on a shoe string budget.

So after replacing rockers and cab corners and sheet metal work was pretty much done. There was some rot on the wheel wells of the bed and the in fenders but nothing note worthy so I moved on to my first engine build

So like I said this is my first complete engine overhaul. I have been working on cars since I was 8 and I'm 31 now so for over 20 years I've been wanting to build on. The motor is a l31 vortec out of a 98 suburban. I got this engine out of the local you pull it last summer and it ran great until I spun a bearing and locked it up. So I decided no time like the present to jump on it. It's a stock bottoman end rebuild with .016 shim gaskets and a lt1 cam with 1.6 rockers and ls6 valve springs. I also got a 2400 stall converter to help it move a little through the th400 with soon to be gone rear 2.73 gears.

The goods!

Oh pics of my bracing delimma. Trying to decide is the A frame will compromise strength.

Interferes with rear pumpkin but I think it will provide more torsional strength

This would clear everything but would it be weaker?

If you go with the A style to clear the differential, just add two more pipes at the top of the A.

This tire will stick great. Loves the heat, after a few runs wont get greasy like 71s. This size might seem a tad small but the sidewall wont flex. I run this tire on a 17x11 and it handles great

VERY cool! I love squarebody trucks (own one myself). The transformation of this thing is awesome! Love the DIY attitude/approach. Not that I don't appreciate the high end pro built rides, but it's cool to see someone do what they can to make what they have better/more fun. Keep it up, will be following this progress.

Would love to hear what Rob suggested (PM me or post here).....I've picked his brain a fair amount myself.

Thanks a lot, it can be kind of intimidating to post here with all the high end high$$ builds. I don't get a lot of replies/attention on my thread but if what I'm doing helps someone else then I needed to post it. The plan is to continue to drive the truck and build it better over time just gotta do it as my pocket allows. Here's what he posted in my other thread about rear leaf spring suspension tuning

cool lookin Square ya got Mtrhd. As to the OP, KO, a sway bar would help, but not a heavy bar. Look at a camaro rear bar, 3/4" to 7/8", '70 up to '92. Easy to find and fit. As for the springs, you want to go the other way. Soften them up to drop the spring rate. The key here is to 'Free' up the rear. Remove some of the short leafs so your down to the longest three or four leafs. Put Teflon spring liner between the leafs (Speedway or TCI). This may drop the truck some more - but that's OK, Another trick is to change the shackle position. This can be a big help for leaf suspended trucks. On a stock 'Truck' style leaf, the shackle runs from the frame mount UP to the spring. The spring then tries to PULL the shackle to a straight up position the more it is loaded. (Progressive rate) This works great for haulin hay, but not for haulin the mail. In a 'Car' style leaf set up, the shackle runs from the frame mount DOWN to the spring. The spring now tries to PUSH the shackle up, and in doing so, wants the spring to flex out to be longer so that the shackle can move up in an arc.(regressive rate). You can take your OE mounts, knock the rivits out, and flip them upside down on the chassis. Move them appx 1/2" forward on the frame, so that the shackle has a slight slope back to the spring eye (At loaded ride height) say 5* to 10*. this mod will raise the truck 1 1/2 to 2". some of that may be gained back with the spring mod. (or a small block if you want - I'm not a fan of blocks if you can avoid it.) These three changes could be done in a weekend for less than $100 bucks, and the difference would be huge. I really like that approach on stiffening the frame!
Do you plan to add more tubing to the rest of the frame?

I was thinking about adding some more tubing under the cab but, I think it would prove futile with the level I'm building this truck to. I really just want it to be fun on the winding back roads and maybe hit an auto-x once or twice a year. This should be plenty with the rights shocks and front springs for street truck.

Its amazing what bracing will do. There is so much flex in these frames. You should check out robs thread called "make it handle" it spells out exactly where to put bracing

Makes a huge difference! I read the make it handle thread a couple times hence the bracing between the leaf spring mounting locations. I wanted to help the problem without going full frame that's why I'm not doing anything under the cab. This is not a full race truck (yet) just a fun street truck.

This is ONE GREAT BUILD!

I like to see builds such as this in any style where the builder uses time, ability and effort (No Budget) versus Big Money, Best Parts and TV or Car Hobby famous labor doing the work.

It truly is AMAZING what a person CAN DO with a lotta time, ability, effort, hard work and little scrounging for parts to make up for the lack of a big budget.

Way To Go 2ndroundko!!!!

THANKS MAN!!! It seems like a lot of times the small budget build get no love for the lack of bling, those are my favorite builds though. Would i like to have a bigger budget to buy better parts? Absolutely but in the grand scheme of things I'd rather drive it than look at it on jack stands and cradles while saving for parts. Its an ugly duckling but I get tons of looks and compliments as is. As time and effort increase so does ability as well, I have learned a lot by just going for it and it feel great to be ale to say I built it.

Don't be intimidated! All posts help here, even if you don't get replies! I did a write up on my motor swap on another website years ago, And every now and then I get people asking questions, thst was over 10 years ago!

I love what you are doing with a regular working mans budget! Keep it up. (And pics are totally necessary, as it's how I get my fix while I save money).

Have you upgraded the bushings yet? When I did that to my truck it made a huge difference. I used a kit from PST.

alright I know this part is not performance related, but, DANGIT ITS COOL. Since use CDs or the radio and i always tether my phone i figured why not put a tablet in the dash for music control, navigaiton and the cool factor.

The dash in general was in terrible shape. perfect excuse to do something cool or completely destroy it.

Thanks working on finishing up my screw in rocker studs since the pressed in one's started backing out. I have almost finished the dash however.

Dude, that's cool. I love your "I can alter this" attitude!
Curious though, what's the stuff sprayed on the head gaskets (bottom of page one).
I've done countless engine/heads, but never sprayed anything on the head gaskets.

your build is dope! you don't need big money to make a prideful ride. the real pleasure of it all is when you see the image in your head, then materialize it into your hands. I know what it's like when the funds don't come fast enough to do the build like you want in the time you want them done, but it will be YOUR baby. my build has been going for 4 years now...

I was stationed at Camp Lejeune for a long time and I left in 2004. what part of NC are you in?

Thanks man right now I'm back in nursing school with plans to build a shop to finish this when I'm done. My thing is I want to do it all myself, if I dont know how to do something I will research until I'm convinced I can do it. When funds are low you learn to use your time wisely. I live in Greenville about and hour and a half from Jacksonville

I sprayed it. Reduce the rustoleum 30% with acetone and spray with a primer gun, it layed out ok but started getting hot and dry sprayed a lil.

Update:

TH400 decided it wanted to start slipping so the truck is parked now until spring break from nursing school (gotta fund this somehow).

plans: 700r4 swap

parts list
700r4
toque converter
tcc lock up harness
vette servo
3.42 or 3.73 rear

I already have the trans, just need to order the misc items to compete the swap shouldn't take more than a weekend to so, but I learned not to hold my breath, murphy's law likes to play with me.

No pics right now but I have been making progress. I got the blown th400 out. Installed the 700r4 Jr shift kit in the new trans and got it in the truck. I got to finish bolting the trans in and sort out the linkage and that part will be done. This weekend is 40% off at lkq so I smatched up a 3.73 4wd rear with limited slip and a aluminum drive shaft so that should wake the beast up a little.

Trying to decide if I want to have the axles redrill ed for 5x5 or get adapters. As of right now I wanted to run some spacers away to push the wheels out a little so I'm leaning toward the spacers.

Love the build man, keep it up. I just picked up a 74 C10 on a whim to make a nice driver out of. Now I have 2 projects to tinker with and split time/money/effort between. I'm definitely on the same budget plan as you.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. I made some progress but with school and kids I didn't get any pictures. Turns out the 4x4 3.73 rear I got was going to be too big. I took it back to the junkyard and found a obs 3.42 rear to put in. I ended up changing the ring and pinion in my stock rear because the axles were different sizes in the obs rear. Next step is get a longer yoke for the 700r4 so I can finally get back on the road!

Personally, any time I open a thread and the first thing is a picture of a new shop built chassis, I head right back out of that thread lol.
