I need opinions about Grundy and Hagerty insurance. Just filled out online quotes for both and they are very different.

Hagerty was $615
Bodily injury: 100k per person
Property Damage: 100k per person
Uninsured Motorist: 100k per person
Medical Payments 1,000 per person
Personal injury Protection: 10k per person

Grundy was $230
Bodily injury & property damage: 100k
Uninsured Motorist: 100k

For both of these I valued the car at $15,000. I'm unsure where the market is at right now but figured that was fairly safe for a 1969 Nova with a 350 crate motor, decent paint, some basic suspension mods but otherwise reasonably stock.

Don't know about Grundy-

But if you try Hagerty and say "modified"- a rollbar-engine swap-flares- they put you in the bad boy category and rates are doubled!!!

I've been very happy with Larue for my Chevelle. The rates are very good as well.

Doesn't look like they are equal coverage as one doesn't have PiP and Medical.

I have Heacock Classic and have been happy

I had Grundy before, when they sold out to the new company everything went down hill very fast. Once it was time to renew I left. Glad I did.

Also, that Haggerty doesn't look right. I just quoted my 66 Chevelle @ $50k and got a price quote of $656.

I have a heavily modified 69 Chevrolet ins. With American collectors and have filed 2 claims over the years that I have had it. Once driving home from Shades of the past busted windshield other time car was in garage during house fire both times told to take to my choice no question asked and send them the bill. Very reasonable rates. Keith

I got similar quotes from both companies on my 71 Firebird, as a project car valued at like $10k. It was a surprisingly large difference, so I did go with Grundy. Admittedly I don't know what all the coverage is, item by item though. I just needed to get collector car insurance on it so I can register the title in my name (bogus new law Arizona has, no more "title only"). I also get good rates through State Farm for their collector car policy.

Yeah I know they aren't apples to apples comparisons. What I posted is what the online quotes had for defaults. I'm wondering how bad my age(I'm 29) is setting me back.

I'll check out Larue and Heacock. Thanks guys.

Your age shouldn't matter unless you have points on your license. You're also correct as the comparison between the two are like apples and oranges due to coverage variances. I recommend that you talk to an agent instead of completing an online form as you will be able to explain any underwriting concerns and hopefully get an accurate rate.

As far as one being better than the other, I have Hagerty but have never had a claim. They take my money each year and if the worst happens, we will see if they're as good as people say they are ...

Some of the upper tier insurance companies like Farmers will do a stated/declared value in place of actual cash value.

Thanks Mary! I'll give both a call, I understand both quotes are real loose since it takes little info and does not look at your driving recorded.

Talked to my dad today and he has used Grundy for years. I remember a couple years back he had a fluke accident with a 33 Ford kit car and they were very easy to deal with.

I've always had Hagerty, and they are a bit more than others, but I felt like they were the easiest to work with. They're a little more lenient also if you like driving your classic a lot, as long as you don't make it your daily driver. I had one claim with them last year, bent a rim on the Power Tour, they covered it no questions asked and very pleasant to deal with the claims department.

What about mileage restrictions? That's always been the killer for me. the Canadian brokers for Haggerty and Grundy always want ridiculous restrictions like <2K a year and never ever driven to work.

Last year we did the Power Tour, 2,800 miles round trip from the time we left home until the time we returned to Michigan. Just returned on a road trip to and from Kentucky, that was another 925 miles. They said the occasional drive to work is fine, especially with all of the mid-week cruise-ins around, a lot of people want to leave directly from work and go to the cruise-in. In Michigan at least, if you register it as a collector vehicle, then the mileage is more limited.

I have had Grundy from day one (16 yrs), my car value is 43,000 and it cost approx. $260 to insure.
I have had 2 different claims with them, one when under old management and the other under new. Both claims were excellent experience's, the second claim I found I had damage done to my power steering rack that wasn't found initially. They sent a guy out and he approved it immediately. Now I here old man grundy is back involved.
Grundy is very lenient on engine and suspension mods also, I spelled out exactly what I had and they said no problem.
I can only go by my experiences but they have been excellent, I am sure Hagerty is the same.
Just pick a reputable company and you will be fine
