View Full Version : Triumph GT6 project... Built frame, SBC, etc... Which coil Overs?

I love putting big engines in little British cars and I recently acquired a Triumph GT6 that has already gotten a lot of work done to it... Fully built frame, SBC, 9 inch rear etc.. It's sat for a really long time and someone put air bags in it and they are dry rotted and flat. I like it easy so I was planning on replacing the airbag stuff with coil overs. How do I determine which coil overs I need, since it's such a weird application and another question, should I take the time to toss sway bars in it? Car will be auto crossed etc, but mainly a driver car that can perform.

A few years ago I saw a 460 Ford engines spitfire. Pushed all the right buttons. I would call the experts at Ridetech. Keep feeding us info!

Spitfire and 240z in the local pic a part. Both got me thinking V8 power.

It's definetly not an easy swap to do, but it's an interesting one. There's a ton of info on doing it at www.britishv8.org

A buddy put a Buick/Rover aluminum V8 in an MGB. Cut down a 8.5" 10 bolt for it, Muncie 4 speed. being a Pontiac guys he blended and early GTO scoop for carb clearance. Was pretty nice but tight! It likes to get sideways easy!

This one has a narrowed rear from a 63 bel air, big drum brakes narrowed about as much as it can be narrowed... Built frame etc, etc... 200-4R for the overdrive... When it had the blower on it it loved to go straight up with the slicks, not sideways, which led to a lot of front end body work for me... I swapped the engine to a built l-82 out of a 79 corvette. I miss the blower look so I'll probably build another baby blower motor for it and toss it in. It's around 350 rwhp now, was about 450 when it was doing the wheels stands. It's a fun little car, but the triumph will be a lot of fun also.

Some guys using the early Chevy pumpkin rears put in Dana spiders to get as better axle spline count , but I bet as light as that car is it will be fine.

Ok, It's been awhile since I bumped this one up, but I want to get a few opinions on what I'm thinking as a way ahead on the car. I originally was going to put a viper motor in the car and after a lot of measurements, I could make it fit. They are extremely heavy and expensive though and really, it would just be for the cool factor, since there are many other options that would work a lot better with the parts I have lying around.
new thoughts are something along the lines of...
Engine:
-Iron Block / Aluminum head LS series engine built to handle lots of boost
-T67 twin turbos for now... Haven't decided just yet though.
-4L80E trans to handle the power and give me the overdrive... un-decided on stall speed for the moment
-Already have a Ford 9 inch in the rear and disc brakes all around, the mini spool in the rear is going away and probably something in the 3:55 range will go back in.
-Already have the Fuel system and the engine computers (Fuel lab, FAST XFI/XIM)
-Suspension will be adjustable Coil overs all around.

Here's where I break from the norm and am really un-decided though.
-Thinking of putting 67 mustang Eleanor style rear taillights in the car... I think the rearend of the car lends itself well to that style and that car is my favorite car of all time so I'm a little biased... Open to thoughts or other ideas.
-Car is going to get side pipes but going to recess them like the Jaguar V12 powered GT6 that's in the project journal... I don't have the space to run them under the frame so coming off the turbos, that seems like an easy choice.
-I'm going to put the side windows back in the car to fix the looks and massive blind spot that it has right now. I haven't decided if -I'm going to put the little vents behind the windows or not... Thoughts?
-I'm going to French in the license plate in the rear below the Eleanor tail lights.

Thoughts? Car weighed 2,022lbs with the TH400, Iron block/heads SBC, and ford 9 inch in the car. I'm going to try and keep the full weight of the car below 2600 lbs.
-I'm looking for a very small vintage air type setup that I can cram in the dash area to give me AC and Heat. any ideas on where to find one?
-The interior right now will be bucket seats and I'll go through and re-do everything so it looks nice and more up to speed with the theme of the build.
-paint scheme, well, yeah, very close to the Eleanor type paint scheme. Basically gunmetal grey with a black stripe from the hood scoop back and a red pinstripe around that black stripe. Eleanor type wheels probably because I have ford bolt pattern on the car right now.
Thoughts?

I still have to figure out the coil overs. Probably have to wait till I get corner weights, etc so I don't have to buy the setup twice.

Just an FYI, the first and second gen Viper motors are heavy ( they had Iron Blocks ) After that they went to Aluminum blocks and the motors don't weigh much more than an Iron small block, 500Lbs.

Once you go newer than a gen 2 viper engine, the price goes through the roof. If I could find one reasonably priced Id love to, but for what they are going for price wise online, other engine options are better alternatives.
