I am currently in the process of selecting a GM type II power steering pump to run my upcoming hydroboost system and of course my steering gear box. I have a 600 gear box. I am currently using a saginaw box and this switch has been decided because the saginaw will not be able to meet my needs in my car. This steering box will be going in a road racing 77 trans am.

I spoke with hydratech and concept 1 pulleys. They recommended a type II pump that flows 2.11 GPM and has a pressure relief of 1300-1400 PSI. I will have an inline cooler for my PS/hydroboost system and a remote reservoir. I will be running a 4.5" diameter pulley to power the pump. My crank pulley diameter is 6.125". My idle RPM is 800 and I have a rev limiter set at 6500 RPM. I read on KRC's site that their (maybe not other manufacturers) aluminum pumps have a max RPM of 9000 and have a required pit speed of 1000-1500 RPM to flow enough and do their job at low speeds. Others who have adapted a type II pump to applications similar to mine have said that they haven't worried about these RPM restrictions on either end and have been fine. I called tuff stuff and they also said they have never heard of one of their units failing.

Can anyone direct me to a type II pump that meets my specs of comes close to them? I realize I may have to buy a different valve for the pump, and that's ok. I would like to believe there are out of the box solutions though. I haven't found them yet. This is going on a pontiac 400 block (461 stroker). I prefer a bump in the $100-$200 range. If I can safely open my specs up to a wider range I would think that I can find something.

Here is a good thread I found....http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-hybrids/1262185-power-steering-pump-outputs-gto-f-body-corvette-cts-v-truck-etc-3.htmlone of the few I have seen. It looks like a stock CTSV pump might be the closest thing to my specs. The pressure is a little high. Will this cause any issues? Keep in mind that the specs I posted were recommended to me by concept 1 pulleys and I do not know how they correspond to what the 600 gear box and hydropost can handle. I wish there was a beaten path for us all to follow. I'm hoping one of you has that path and can post it here.

If the pressure is too high they mention shim kits at jegs ad summit that help lower the relief pressure. The last page also discusses a new camaro pump....seems close too but would need some shims.

I have a fairly heavy car and my pump is putting out 1500 psi powering hydroboost and an 800 Saginaw box, the the pulley I have is 5.5 inches and the crank is 7.750. I'm not sure of the gpm but the pump sounds strained and I lose steering assist at idle, but I planned on going with a CTSV pump as soon as I have some extra ash to throw at it.

What is your pump from? Is the CTSV what everyone with a setup like ours should be running? Hydratech told me that the PS pulley should be running 25% faster than your crank, so you're right about there with your PS pulley being almost 75% in diameter of your crank pulley. It surprises and alarms me that you have low assist at idle. It would be nice to know where your pump came from or what its GPM flow is.

Talked a long time to Norm at KRC. What a wealth of info. It seems the CTSV pump is NOT a bearing pump and is a bushing pump. These fail much easier. I know I will be avoiding them. I'm probably going with a KRC ps3-29116811 pump.

I think I'm going with a krc aluminum pump. 1450 relief valve and 2.4gpm. Isn't anyone else running these pumps?

I bought the Holley accessory drive kit for my LS3 based 427 and it came with the Corvette style type 2 pump.

Are you sure the 600 box needs 2.11 gpm? That's around what the c5 pump puts out.

I figured the 600 box, since it's used in 99-07 trucks would need somewhere over 3 gpm since that's what the truck pump puts out.

How do u like it? Is it a bushing type? I think I'm going to stay away from them. I thought norm at KRC said all the GM ones were bushing typws. I know he said the ctsv one was. Do u like it? Do u know it's flow rate? What pulleys r u using and what is ur idle and top rpm?
