Hello Everyone,

Here is the ongoing project that is my Silverado. My plans are to build it into more of a pro touring rig. Many people will just say why don't you just buy a Camaro. They just don't understand ;) I can see there are a few build threads on here that are awesome. I really like PCHRods C10R and TheJakeLSX's 1997 C1500 Build to name a couple. Great job guys.

My decision to go with this type of build started after I got a call from a friend of mine asking me if I wanted to participate in Truckin' Magazine's Throwdown. I had actually wanted to get into the event for the last two years but the truck was alway down when it came around.

After I said yes I realized there were a few more mods left to be done before, so upgrading brakes front and rear and wheels and tires got pushed to the front of my to-do list.

I upgraded the Front Calipers and rotors to the 05+ larger ones, EBC Green Stuff Pads and EBC Slotted rotors as well as Russell Performance Braided Stainless brake lines. Also painted the Calipers and Brackets to match the Chevrolet Orange on the engine. I used VHT True Orange Caliper paint which matches pretty well.

And the rears:

The truck stops much better now.

I wanted to get a stickier tire on next that would help with more than just straight line. So I decided to go with Nitto NT-05's. The new tires meant new wheels that had to be 18's so I jumped on Craigslist and found a set of Nissan Titan 5 spokes and got them mounted up.

And here's some pics and a crappy cell video from the event:

I had a blast. A lot of fun pushing the truck to do more than I had ever done with it.

Well after beating on the truck around the autocross course it be came pretty apparent that some more suspension mods may be in order. Got the truck on the scales at the end of last week. Might be upgrading to Ridetech Coil-Overs soon, We'll see.

My latest mod was to ditch the column shifter for a B&M Pro Ratchet. Ideally I would love to have a manual transmission in the truck, but I am wondering if keeping the auto trans will actually be better for the type of driving that I plan on doing. Here's a few more pics:

Trying to get the truck ready for the Hotchkis Autocross on September 19-20 in Fontana.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/08/IMG_8051_zpsb1vodl8d-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_8051_zpsb1vodl8d.jpg.html)

I had a set of tilt back Corbeau seats at the shop waiting to go in my boss' Jeep so I decided to try see what they'd look like in the truck. They look tiny compared to the factory seats. I'm not sure if I would do a fixed back or a reclining seat. Just have to do some measuring and see what I'll have to do for brackets.

I'm looking at doing a seat/harness setup similar to this:

Nice!

So what did it run in the 1/4?

Steve-O-08

My best 1/4 in the truck is a 12.7 @ 107 on a ET Street Radial. For the event I could only manage a 13.2 on the NT-05's

Nice build, truck looks great.
If you decide to go to coil-overs you could use the mount from pro comp so it would be a bolt in job.

Did you have to go to a bigger wheel with the upsized rotors?
Would those brakes work with 17" wheels?

Lookin forward to your updates

I can still do the stud mount RT HQ's instead of the eye/eye mount if I wanted. There are a few Silverado guys that have done the swap with pretty good results.

Actually I like the ride height, so I might just be gong with the adjustable smooth-body Ridetech shocks for now.

As for the brakes, I didn't have to go with larger wheels with the brakes. They cleared my stock 17's. I only went with the 18's because I wanted to run the NT-05's. I could have gone with 20's But I was trying to keep cost and weight down.

You know, good call. I never even thought about the stud mount. That's a great idea. I'm pretty sure the stud mount is a little less expensive than the coil over mount.

I'll have to look into those shocks.

Nice, thanks for the info. I'm in desperate need of brakes.

Thanks again

A little update. Just got my seats on Thursday. Decided on a pair of Corbeau FX1's. Much lighter than the factory seats. Going to weigh the factory ones to get a comparison just because.

I have to figure out mounting them. Pulled the brackets off the stock seats. I'm going to be using the factory sliders and side mount brackets. Once the seats are mounted, a harness bar is next. Not going to do a full cage. Probably just a harness bar similar to this:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/08/2AC93B05E071433DBC5DF0BF0D6C7196png_zpse-1.jpeg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/2AC93B05-E071-433D-BC5D-F0BF0D6C7196.png_zpsegfw96b9.jpeg.html)

Alright after working all labor day weekend I got the seat brackets made up and got the harness bar bent up and welded. Also got my harnesses in too.

I had a friend of mine bend up the door bars and weld the whole thing up for me.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/09/IMG_8360_zpsrbhgdxt4-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_8360_zpsrbhgdxt4.jpg.html)

After a coat of paint:

Now all that's left to is clean up the cab and re-install everything. I'm going to have to trim a few small spots on the rear interior panels. I also decided now would be the time to recover my headliner as it was starting to sag on the sides above the windows.

Not bad for not being an upholstery guy. Just letting the glue dry overnight and I'll trim up the edges and start re-assembly tomorrow.

I'll have the rest of the truck buttoned up this week. Ready for the NMCA Autocross event next weekend.

What is the height on the harness bar or where is the bar located in relation to holes in seats for the belts that go over sholders? im not quite sure of where the harness bar needs to be to work properly . if you are going to be at "Hotchkis" event this weekend i will see you there and get a better understanding of setting up properly . im bringing my 94 chevy truck out for event look forward to meeting you

Thanks guys,

I did make it out to Hotchkis. Got everything done Friday night and made it there Saturday Morning. I had a great time. It was nice to meet some new people and talk cars and setups and get some pointers for future mods and adjustments. The truck did better than I thought. I was fighting the Caltracs and rear sway bar on Saturday which was making the truck understeer like crazy. I ended up backing the caltracs off completely and disconnecting the sway bar per RBEAST's recommendation and it really helped. This is a learning experience for me coming from a mostly drag racing. I need to stiffen up the front. Going to be going with a larger front sway bar and hopefully adjustable shocks.

The bad news was that Saturday night on the way home the rear seal of the trans popped out on the freeway... Luckily I was able to get it towed back to the shop I work at and get it back together for Sunday. On the way home Sunday I realized the trans was still leaking. Turns out I broke the trans mount which ended up taking out the rear bushing in the trans as well as the driveshaft yoke. Luckily I do have another 4L80e that I'm going to have gone through and get it put in for the next event in October.

I also got my girlfriend signed up for next event with her truck. I'm really lucky that she enjoys the automotive scene as much as I do. She was a trooper and stuck it out all weekend in the 100+ degree heat. We've got suspension parts on the way for her truck. Hopefully we'll get it lowered and make some tune adjustments next weekend and then she'll be ready for her first event. She's like me, I am a horrible spectator. I need to be out there having fun haha.

Hmmm, you have a thread on PT.net huh?

Glad you made it out to Hotchkis, looks like a blast.
How did the brakes hold up? I'm looking at the same brakes for my Tahoe. Do you think the EBC brakes are overkill for a DDer?
That's a bummer about your trans. Hopefully you'll get the spare 80 ready to go.
That's awesome about your girl getting involved, I wish my woman was a car enthusiast, haha.

I just noticed, you're on PT.net.

Yeah Tig, I have a thread on PT.net too.

Little update, Just not of my truck haha.

Got the girlfriend's truck lowered for her. She's signed up for the next Hotchkis event. Did a 3/6 Drop on it. Belltech Pro coils up front and a flip kit with a McGaughys C-Notch in the rear and a set of Belltech Street Performance shocks.

Already have a set of EBC Green-Stuff pads and Rotors on the front. The truck handles pretty well now. Going to align it tomorrow.

As for my truck, my other transmission is in the works now. I'm hoping to have it back by mid week. The driveshaft is going to have the balance checked and swap the yoke out. Also finishing up my new exhaust set up and have a front sway bar on the way.

Thanks! The shifter is in a good spot, but it is a little low, even after the new seats with a slightly shorter seating position. I would like to put a pistol grip handle on it. it would just raise the handle about an inch and a half which should be about perfect for me. After I get the truck back together again I will try a new handle to see how I like it.

Well I got the hurt transmission out of the truck and just got the new one back in. and I am having the same issues I had before. Before I set the truck back down on the ground I shifted into reverse, I feel a solid engagement and the wheels spin in the correct direction. I shifted into drive and the trans shifts 1-2-3 but does not shift into 4th. When I set the truck back down on the ground it will not move in reverse. 3-4000 rpm and it will not move. I can't really pull the truck forward because of how it is sitting in the driveway. Really frustrated... Trying to figure out the problem yet again. Still trying to get the truck ready for next weekend...

Didn't really have any time to upload any pictures from this weekend. Almost too busy to snap a few. Here's a few pics.

Dropping the trans out earlier in the week:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/IMG_8709_zpsackl65wo-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_8709_zpsackl65wo.jpg.html)

The only thing that went mostly right was my front swaybar. Upgraded the stock with a Belltech 1 3/8 soild bar. I was having some issues with the links, but that was due to the way the DJM lower control arm link mounts are designed. Got the DJM links installed for now, but I want to upgrade them to a Ridetech Posi-Link setup for better angles.

Stock bar next to the Belltech. I already have a Hotchkis Bar under the back of the truck although it's disconnected now. (seemed to help loosen the back of the truck up last NMCA event.

Got the trans back Saturday morning from a friend of mine that I had go through it.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/IMG_8714_zps1z5ywni7-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_8714_zps1z5ywni7.jpg.html)

Finished installing the trans this morning and got it back down on the ground ready for a test drive when I realized I had no reverse or 4th gear... After some scan tool and pressure gauge testing and a little internet research and I decided to swap valve bodies with the other 4L80e that I have. I am suspecting the Transgo separator plate or possibly one of the other pieces of the shift kit. Swapping it with a known good VB will just help determine the problem.

I originally rebuilt that transmission myself and had the same issues about a year ago. But needing to get the truck finished up for some deadline, I found another unit and just dropped it in. My hope was that my buddy would find something I missed or was wrong, but he didn't see anything our of the ordinary. I was at least hoping for a pinched seal or something. But it did boost my confidence in transmission works as I was very careful when I originally rebuilt it.

I have the truck draining now and I'm going to swap valve bodies tomorrow night.

I pulled the pan and valve body off the other trans. You can definitely see the bushing material on the filter and gaskets. I'm going to clean it all out and get it ready to swap in.

And now it looks like rain is in the forecast for this weekend to top things off. Gotta keep my eye on the prize and get this thing done. I'll update more later.

Update Caution, Pic heavy.

So I ended up making it out to the NMCA Hotchkis event. I picked up a new rebuilt trans after working out a deal with the builder getting it installed Thursday night and getting the truck aligned Friday morning. I hate cutting things so close, but this time it worked out. Got more seat time in the truck figured out a few more weaknesses and strengths. The truck has plenty of power (great on the larger course) but my torque converter is just too loose for autocross. Coming from drag racing the 32-3400 stall is great to get the truck moving, but when getting on the power coming out of a corner it can make the power come in abruptly and break the tires loose mid corner. I also wish I could have upgraded shocks before this event. But the trans pushed them back. I just saw that Hotchkis has a 25% off sale this weekend. I might just order my shocks now.

As for the event, it went great. It was nice to run the big course and carry a lot of speed through it. My girlfriend Claudia had a great time too. She had a good time feeling out her own truck and getting used to the way it handles. She was just limited by the tires and lack of power on the long straights. It was great to see her out there having just as much fun as I was. Here are a few pics from the weekend.

Bright and early on Saturday morning.

Small update. I just received my new shocks. They are Hotchkis Tuned 1.5 APS Shocks by Fox. They are 29 way rebound adjustable. They look great. Can't wait to get them installed in the truck. These shocks are actually for a 64-72 A-Body that just happened to be the correct length and configuration for my truck.

The only thing I'll need to do is press out the T-Bar from one end of the rear shocks.

These are just like the Ridetech versions. I emailed RT a handful of times and could never get a reply from them... I realized Hotchkis had these after checking out their website. Super fast email replies and they were very helpful. Took advantage of their Halloween sale and picked up a set. Might try to get them installed this weekend if I have time.

Update!

Finally had a nice day to get my shocks installed as well as my new matching Hotchkis front sway bar. I did have to make a slight modification to the rear upper shock mounts. The larger end/cap on the new shocks was hitting the mount. Just cleaned up the edge of the mounts with a flap wheel and touched them up with a little paint and the rears bolted right in with more new bolts. For the fronts I had to clearance the opening in the bottom of the lower control arm to clear the t-bar lower mount. Other than the slight clearancing no issues. I mounted the rears with the adjusters on the bottom for easy access and the front's have the adjuster on top instead of bottoms like qa1's and similar. I'm just waiting for a set of front sway bar links from Spohn performance with heim's at one end. The link mount on the lower control arms is terrible for a straight link so to keep them from binding I'm going with a heim at one end.

And for the pictures:

How much bigger is the Hotchkiss bar vs the stock ?

Steve-O-08

The stock front sway bar was 1 3/16" I believe and it was hollow. The Belltech was 1 3/8" solid and the Hotchkis is 1 1/2 and hollow.

Realized I never posted any pics of the sway bar links or any info once the truck was done. So here-goes.

Just a few updates. I got the everything together and got some miles on the truck. I drove it out to the Motor 4 Toys car show and got to see how the shocks worked out. Started them at 10 clicks from full soft (middle of the adjustment and I was very impressed. The truck was much more stable and comfortable to drive, even with the crappy freeways. Ended up firming up the front a few more clicks and it was perfect. Obviously I'll end up making adjustments when I do the next autocross event and see how they help there.

I ended up getting sway bar links from Sphon Performance. They were actually for a 70-81 F-Body. They worked out perfectly. I really don't like the link mount on the lower arms, but with the clevis and the heims they work great.

Small update. Have a few other things in mind that I would like to get done. I'm relocating the battery to the passenger side with my new Optima that I got for Christmas. (Issues with the current battery) Also moving the pcm into the old battery spot. Moving the battery will allow me to upgrade the wiring and clean it all up. The battery tray is ordered and I'm going to get the pcm bracket worked out this week. Going to start dropping the trans out so I can get the converter back to Circle D to have it re-stalled. Found a small leak on one of the transmission cooler lines so I am thinking about replacing them with AN lines while I have the transmission out. So, a lot of work left to do and never enough time to do it. We shall see how this goes.

Here's a few pictures so far.

New battery in it's new spot with custom 17mm socket mount

Not sure if there is a way to use the fender brace with the battery here but if I can I will make it work.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/12/IMG_9416_zpsuo6zbpsi-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_9416_zpsuo6zbpsi.jpg.html)

Old battery gone revealing the crusty battery tray. New one is also on it's way.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/12/IMG_9421_zpsgqybzb5x-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_9421_zpsgqybzb5x.jpg.html)

Pcm sitting in it's new home. Going to cut open and re-wrap some of the harness to clean it up.

And a general idea of where everything will live when it's all said and done.

The only thing I am not sure if is the fitting size of the cooler lines going into the radiator. I believe they were 5/8-18 inverted flare, just can't find the receipt on the line adapters I bought when I added my cooler.

Love the truck! One of my favorite body styles. The retired Sheriff were I grew up drives one. Before that he drove a pretty hot C1500 flare side.

Thanks. That's cool ^

It's a work in progress. Hopefully more coming in the next few weeks. Just trying to figure out a plan of attack.

Starting off the new year with something completely different....

Just kidding. More work on the truck :)

Trans is out. Torque converter is out, packaged up and on it's way back to Circle D for a re-stall.

Also started cleaning up the engine compartment. Getting rid of things that don't need to be there.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/01/IMG_9485_zpspn8ge6k3-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_9485_zpspn8ge6k3.jpg.html)

Driver's side. No more jump post/bracket

Got a bracket to re-mount the pcm. Found it on eBay. Just need to figure out come spacers that will hold it just above the factory battery box.

Parts update. Had a few things show up this week:

Battery Tray:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/01/IMG_9515_zpshjni1l9h-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_9515_zpshjni1l9h.jpg.html)

New Shifter:

Trans crossmember from Dirt track racer 81 (Tyler):

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/01/IMG_9523_zpsm2v9kpon-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_9523_zpsm2v9kpon.jpg.html)

Got the battery tray mounted and the battery on it. Looks pretty good.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/01/IMG_9542_zpsmkqc5pvu-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_9542_zpsmkqc5pvu.jpg.html)

Going to be running AN lines for the trans cooler so I pulled the cooler out to make way for the replacement. Might end up using this cooler for power steering. Don't think it would be too big for that. Not sure if there are any down sides to it.

Trans cooler lines were not looking so hot...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/01/IMG_9552_zpsmfyzqhv0-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_9552_zpsmfyzqhv0.jpg.html)

Also flipped and trimmed the lower cross-brace on the hood latch support. Now I'll have room for both large coolers if I choose to run them.

That's all for now.

steve'o man you do nice work and attention to detail is incredable. I installed that corvette rearend in my 94 it sat a little high for my liking and I didn't want to start chopping the frame up and find out later i still wasn't happy so I'm looking for another frame i can do a backhalf on and still keep my setup on current one till im ready to swap again... see you at pomona in march

That's cool. Any pics of the new set up, or at least the plans? I'm sure a new frame wouldn't be too hard to find. even if you found a long bed frame you could just back-half it and keep everything from the cab forward. I'll be there in march. I'm going to try and get in another event or two to get used to the truck a little better.

Some more progress.

The new shifter is installed. I like the gate much more than the pro-ratchet. Plus it looks great.

Also got my new trans cooler and lines. Got the cooler mocked up in the same spot as the original one. Ended up not having to flip the lower brace to clear it.

Just waiting for the converter to arrive and then it can get installed and finish mocking up the cooler lines.

Started measuring for the new battery cables. Going to order the cable if I can't find it locally. Once those are done and the PCM is re-mounted, just have a little wiring clean-up and she'll be ready to go.

Got the torque converter installed and the transmission back in. It's now sitting on the new crossmember and I finished getting the cooler mounted and plumbed. Just need to go get another piece of 1 ga. and some 4 ga. for the alternator charge wire and finish mounting the pcm and she'll be ready to rock and roll again.

Really like the AN fittings. Much cleaner and simpler than the factory lines. I assume they are worth about 10hp a piece. :jest:

Charging great with the upgraded wiring. Just need to top off the trans and give it a powerwash and scrub underneath. Just because I can. The steering rack leak is getting worse, that might be in the near future. RE-making my e-fan harness. My Blackbear one ate another relay. Making a new harness that is actually fused. Would live to do a 34" Rad and fans at the same time if I can.

Finally got all of the loose ends taken care of this weekend.

Mounted the pcm with the bracket I picked up. ended up bolting it to the inner fender. Very sturdy and cleaner than my original plans.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/02/IMG_9775_zpsmp7pw73k-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_9775_zpsmp7pw73k.jpg.html)

Wired up a new fan harness with better relays. Picked up two new weatherpack relays and a new crimper and got the harness laid out and wired up. Then I got the fan harness and the rest of the pcm harness re-loomed and taped up.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/02/IMG_9767_zps0b338ocy-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_9767_zps0b338ocy.jpg.html)

Also for the stock battery cable end covers on. Just need a longer sidepost bolt to replace the regular bolt I was using. Just because I want to be picky.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/02/IMG_9787_zpsaplyywdb-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_9787_zpsaplyywdb.jpg.html)

Then I took the truck for a drive. The converter stall speed is exactly what I wanted. That along with the new shifter make engine braking much easier. Now I just need to make some shift point adjustments and she'll be ready to for the next auto-x weekend.

Thanks man. Didn't lower the truck any more. It's still at the same height as it was before. The truck felt pretty good. Having a couple issues with it now. Might have a vacuum leak. Going to dig into it tomorrow. The converter is as tight as we could make the 245mm. It's right around 26-2800. Just getting a few things adjusted and I'll be ready for Pomona. Any updates with your truck?

Hey guys. I realize it's been a little while since I've updated this. Here's a few new things to my truck and to my girlfriend's truck.

Claudia got me a new steering wheel for my birthday. I had been tossing around the idea for a little while. It's a Sparco R345 and the adapter is a Momo. Love the wheel. Much better than the 15 1/2 diameter stock one. Got to test it out at the NMCA West Hotchkis Autocross last weekend. More pics from the event below.

Also got a new set of wheels and tires on Claudia's truck. 295/45R18 NT-05's like mine on Level 8 Wheels. I've also got a set of these wheels for my truck coming. I was planning on getting them on my truck first but she beat me to the punch. The stance is perfect with the tire width. Just one slight rubbing issue on the left rear but that was taken car of easily.

Only had one issue that weeked. One of my exhaust band clamps had loosened up and the exhaust had slid off the y pipe. Scared me a little but after I realized that it was just a stretched clamp I redneck engineered a quick fix and went about the rest of the weekend with a Redbull can fix haha.

Overall it was a great weekend. Claudia took first place in the truck class Saturday and I did on Sunday. Although it was just the two of us battling it out it was a great time. Should be a few more trucks out next time. Got to meet Brandy and Rob from PCHRods and got to have them ride along and give us a few pointers which helped us both improve. Few more things to come for both trucks. I'll hopefully get a few of them done before the next event. Because Racetrucks.

A few updates. A few weeks ago Claudia and I got to do another Autocross at the Airport in Camarillo, CA. It was pretty fun. Limited to only 30 cars it kept things moving quickly. Got to hang out with Rob and Brandy of PCH Rods and learn a little more. Claudia got to drive my truck a couple laps and see how it felt compared to hers. Overall a good day. No obvious casualties until I started taking the front end apart for a spring swap.

I needed to get a higher rate front spring in the front of the truck to keep the truck from nose-diving into corners. Up to this point I've run the stock 106,000 mile coil spring and lower control arms to achieve the height. I started calling and emailing a handful of places to find out spring rates/heights on their GM truck coil springs I ended up going with Belltech. They were the only ones that would give me any info on the springs. Everyone else gave me replies like: They are like stock, or we don't have the info on them.

The springs were delivered last Saturday so got to un-bolting.

I found that I had a missing sway bar link bushing on the passenger side. The missing bushing let the sway bar to slide toward the drivers side which bent both links. The bar rubbed against the tire and ended up knocking the grease fitting off the driver's tie rod end.

The upper control arms boots were leaking and the bushings were drying out and starting to crack, So I ordered a new set of and new tie rod ends. I already had new Moog ball joints for the DJM arms that I never got around to installing so I did everything all together. Just need to figure out sway bar links for the front and she'll be ready to rock for the next Hotchkis event in June.

I also pulled the trigger on new wheels and because my NT05's are pretty much completely wasted new tires too. Not going to be leaving the wheels black. Taking them down to get coated today and then have the tires installed. Will hopefully have them back soon and get them on the truck.

The next few things I want/need to do are. Cut the transmission crossmember brackets level with the frame and plate them in. Ground clearance is already really close and will already scrape on my driveway. It'll be even more of a problem with the new shorter tire diameter.

Alright guys. Finally getting around to getting a update to this thread. Been really busy lately so not much time to post. Ended up getting a new job and a new daily driver/hauler and also helped PCHRODS out with the C10R's new engine install among other things.

Here are a few pictures of the trucks new wheels and tires. Got the wheels cerakote'd and mounted up the tires. Also had the bowtie matched to the wheels. With the 1" drop springs the truck sat a little too low in the front and I put in a set of 1" spacers that came with Claudia's front springs to bring it back up. I wanted to take the truck out and see how it handled with the new tires and see if it would have any issues with the sidewalls rolling over. If I did I was going to have the wheels widened. The shop that I was going to have the wheels done wasn't going to be able to start on them until this week anyway. The diameter of the new BFG's are much shorter than the NtT05's I was running before.

Did a few upgrades to Claudia's truck as well. Her truck got a new cam and springs, Set of headers and finally got her rear sway bar installed. I also painted her intake and bowtie. I actually really like the color. Not bad for a rattle can job.

We took the truck out to the latest NMCA West Autocross on June 18th and 19th. I was really excited to see how the trucks would do. Unfortunately I did have some issues... My new front sway bar links didn't make it through the first run on Saturday. Pulled one of the pivot ball ends out of the socket on both links.. Unfortunately I didn't actually find out they had separated until the end of the day... With the truck on the ground the rubber boots were just holding the link ends together. When I jacked up front end I found that they come completely apart. I actually borrowed the front links off Rob's (PCHRODS) Dodge tow rig and ran all day on Sunday. The truck handled much better. (obviously) and I was able to play with tire pressures a little to see what the truck liked.

A few things that are on the to-do list now are cut down a set of Dodge HD sway bar links to work with my set up. Luckily I found that the dodge links have a pivot on one end. Going to scale the truck and see if I can get any more spring under it without too much trouble. I would like to try and go as far as I can with the leaf springs on the truck. And start the accumulation of parts for a T56/TR6060 swap. First gear in the 4L80e works fine but I would really like a manual in the truck. That will be a little ways down the road.

Thanks! My new front springs are actually 950lbs haha. And they are actually still a little soft for the weight of the truck. The new tires are BFG Rivals in 315/30R18's. Thanks for the complements.

A few pictures of this weekend's NMCA Hotchkis Autocross.

Ran all day Saturday with no issues, But Only got a three runs Sunday due to a blown out front shock. New suspension mods are now in the not-so-distant future.

I'm going with double adjustable coilovers. I'm having a hard enough time finding the correct spring rates for my truck and going with a coilover will open up my options.

Thanks for posting! This is awesome. I just keep reading and re-reading this thread.

I have 2002 5 speed manual, Silverado Sportside and want to autocross the truck in Solo2 ESP class. Right not all it has is a 2/4 drop but will be doing the brakes and suspension sometime soon. Was wondering what is the offset of the Level 8 MK6 wheels you are running. The 295/45-18 NT05's look to be the perfect size for me as I don't want to lose much diameter from the stock size.

Hope to see more updates to this thread. Thanks again!

Don't worry I didn't forget about this thread. Been very busy with work and home stuff.

A couple updates:

Finally got the transmission back home. It was sitting at a friends shop for the longest time. Still accumulating parts for the swap. Getting closer though.

The BFG Rivals are off the truck and it's sitting on the work out nt05's. Going to be dismounting the BFG's and selling them.

Also started mocking up some new front suspension parts. Blew it all apart again to fab up some plates and mounts for coilovers.

having a plasma table at work made quick work of some of the pieces.

Hopefully this weekend will be a productive one. Going to try and get the CalTracs off and the leaf springs out so I can bring them into work for a few modifications. and get some of the current parts sold to offset the cost of new ones. More coming soon.

Got my front arms on the bench. Cut the spring notches out of the pockets. And got my filler plates ready to weld in along with the coil-over and new sway bar link mounts. I'm going to strip the terrible powder coat on the arms and either re-coat or just paint them. Might make some new bushings for them too.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/12/IMG_3349_zps1anzx2mk-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_3349_zps1anzx2mk.jpg.html)

Also got the rear leafs on the spring tester to check the rates. Why? because I could. My original plan was to 4 link the rear, but I am going to try out a few things with the leaf springs first.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/12/IMG_3340_zps6b70xmnz-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_3340_zps6b70xmnz.jpg.html)

Found a set of rear leafs off of a 2007 Dodge Ram RCSB in an old parts pile at the shop that are pretty close to the dimensions of the Silverado springs.
Might use one of the leafs out of that pack to stiffen up mine.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/12/IMG_3363_zpsaqpesoxn-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_3363_zpsaqpesoxn.jpg.html)

My springs tested out at 220 lbs and the dodge's were 260lbs. So the additional leaf would add a little bit of rate to the rear. I am going to get the front suspension finished up before I change the rate on the rear.

That's all for now. I was going to have the arms finished up yesterday but they had to shut the power off to our building due to an electrical fire on a near by power pole.

Yeah the BW is coming out to be replaced with a Magnaflow.

The truck class was new for NMCA last year. NMCA has Modern Muscle, Classic Muscle, Sports Car, Sport Compact and Exhibition classes. My trucks were originally in the modern muscle class with the Camaro's and Mustangs.

Even with it being a short week I make some good headway on some of the truck parts.

I got my lower control arms almost completely stripped after welding in the spring pocket plates and lower coil-over mounts. I will spend a little more time getting the rest of the coating off the arms is prep for some new paint or maybe powder coat. Anything would be better than the ugly hammer-tone powder coat that was on these arms. Cut off the old sway bar link mounts and going to make some new ones. ( in the correct spot...)

Nothing DJM left on these arms. Now that the crappy ball joints are gone, poly bushings are gone, dumb sway bar mounts are gone lol.

Getting close to having everything ready to go back in for one last mock-up and cycle before making them look pretty. Then it's back on to the rear.

Nice work on the LCAs. I may copy some of your ideas on my Spohn coilover arms; the lower shock mount is just flat plate for the shock t-bar but it doesn't even have the reinforcing ring around it like those arms do. I've already bowed it from heavy use. I like the idea of the double shear mount.

Never saw anyone have a level of fab that he's making his own control arm bushings.
Well done!

Why thank you haha. Luckily I have access to the lathe at work and readily available material. Someone once told me if you have more time than money you build it, if you have more money than time you buy it. Well you can see what my case is. haha

Also got a new set of Crow 5pt's from the girlfriend for Christmas. So those will replace my orange-now peach colored harnesses haha. And will be a lot easier to get in and out of than the latch-types.

Threw some more aggressive media in the blaster in hopes of knocking the rest of the powdercoat off the arms. It helped a little but some of it is still pretty well stuck on there.

Alright, lower arms are finished. Got them painted up and the new delrin bushings and ball joints in. I think they came out pretty good. Decided not to powder coat them for ease of touch up.

Coat of etch primer.

Steve-O-08

Got my arms mocked up the other night to double check shock measurements. Got the shocks ordered. Waiting on an ETA. Having them valved for the truck vs off the shelf valving.

While I'm waiting on shocks I got started on the leaf springs. Sticking with the rear leaf springs for now. Just going to try and make them work as well as I can for what I'm doing with the truck. A 4 link and coil-overs may still be in the future, but for now they'll have to wait.

Going with a slightly modified version of our Hotchkis Swivel bushing kit and possibly adding a leaf from the set of dodge leaf springs I found along with the overload spring. The front of the leafs will get the modified swivel bushings, the rear of the leafs will have new poly bushings and I'm going to machine up some more delrin for the shackles.

Some small progress made on the truck this week.

The parts are still accumulating. Have front springs, rear shocks, new front hubs and a bunch of parts for the eventual manual swap.

When I got the shocks in a few weeks ago I found that the fronts had the wrong bodies on them. (compression adjuster on the bottom instead of on the side) so I sent those back to have them swapped out. Still waiting on them to come back from Afco.

In the meantime I got the rear's installed after I made some reducer spacers for them. (1/2 bolts in 14mm holes) I still need to modify the shock extenders to make sure they don't loosen up again.

Once the front shocks come in I can get the new hubs on and take it to work and align it. Unfortunately I also have to smog the truck by the end of the month too... Also kinda hard to do without the truck drivable. Stupid California... End rant.

Finally made some progress on the truck this weekend. After waiting on parts and being preoccupied with house hunting and working on other projects, she's finally down on the ground again.

Ended up finding an issue with my modified DJM control arms. I wasn't happy with where the shock was sitting at the desired ride height. So I bit the bullet and ordered a set of RT Strong Arms. They were delivered on Friday along with a set of Atomic's seat brackets.

Nice stack of parts waiting for me on Friday:

Ordered tires to replace the BFG's I sold so those will be here this week. I'll get the seat brackets painted up and installed after work this week and get my new harnesses installed. Finally coming together.

Claudia's truck got some love too. Different springs up front along with a set of Belltech Spindles are in the truck now. Just waiting for her shocks to get here and we'll get those installed. Would like to make it out to an autocross next Sunday, but it's still TBD.

Got to drive the truck for the first time in what seemed like forever.

Very happy with it so far. I brought it in to work to get the alignment done and get a few other things checked off the list. Re made a different exhaust hanger and turndown for the magnaflow and trimmed and welding the shock extenders in place to keep them from moving around.

My new tires showed up and I was able to get them mounted and installed right after I was finished with the alignment.

I'm very happy with how the truck feels right now. Front spring rate seems just about perfect and there is still a lot of adjustment in the shocks to get it fine tuned.

The only thing I have left to do now is get my set of Atomic's seat brackets installed with the new Crow harnesses. Still contemplating a color change. Might have a vinyl wrap in it's future.

Thanks man. Thinking about white or a different shade of gray on the wrap. Still undecided. We'll see how the truck does. Lots of changes so it'll take some getting used to. We'll be out there. Good luck to you too.

Belated update from last weekend.

Took the truck out to the NMCA event and got to finally push it. The truck was working pretty well (suspension wise) and didn't do too bad. Still need to spend some time dialing in the shocks, but overall she was working great. Now that all of the suspension issues have been sorted out, the next hurtle is the trans swap. I am signed up for LS Fest West and would really like to bring the truck out with the manual swap done. It's going to be a close one, but I'm going to try.

Here's a few pictures of NMCA shot from my phone. Still going through pictures on the nice camera. Those will be posted when we finish going through the cards.

Finally got a small break in the action to catch up on this thread. Lots to update on.

A week before going to LS Fest I found a small piece of bearing material in the oil. Not wanting to take the chance of possibly hurting the truck in Vegas I decided to yank the engine and go through it.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/05/IMG_4431_zpsqaet3zgy-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_4431_zpsqaet3zgy.jpg.html)

Ended up finding a wiped out thrust bearing and a hurt crankshaft... Not sure if the spacers I used with my converter were too big, but I believe the troubles were transmission related.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/05/IMG_4416_zpswwsbhlly-1.jpg (http://s1139.photobucket.com/user/Stephen_Komlos/media/IMG_4416_zpswwsbhlly.jpg.html)

Never the less. I got the engine torn completely down replaced the crankshaft and had the rotating assembly re-balanced. (in record time) Along with new rings and bearings I did a few other changes. I went with a little bigger cam from Texas Speed, A set of Lunati Dual valve springs, and a bronze bushing rocker upgrade.

LS Fest was a cool event. It was cool to be able to do all of the different parts of the event. Autocross, Drag Racing, Speed Stop, and Road Course all went well. It was cool being able to take the truck on the road course and see how it did at higher speeds. I was pleasantly surprised. I did feel like the rear springs needed to be higher rate, but I was expecting that. Overall it was a good event and it will be on the calendar for next year.

I really wasn't planning on doing that much work in the short amount of time that I had, but luckily it worked out. I've had some crazy deadlines before, so that's nothing new. I hate doing things last minute. It's way easier to take your time so nothing gets overlooked and causes a potentially bigger problem.

Haven't gotten a chance to update all of the pictures yet, but I wanted to get the new stuff up first.

After my last Autocross I was looking at all of my options to quicken up the steering on the truck. As far as I could find there was nobody that makes a quicker ratio steering rack that would fit the truck (without a lot more fabrication) So I decided to give the quickener route a shot.

I yanked the column out of the truck and picked up a 1.5:1 small body quickener. There are a few different styles out there, but I thought this would work easiest with the stock column. I wanted to have everything 'hidden' inside the truck. Not necessarily to be sneaky about it, but to keep things clean in the engine bay. Now from the engine bay the steering shaft look completely factory.

So I had never pulled a steering column apart before so I just took my time and kept the parts organized.

After a lot to drawing and measuring I came up with a plan on how to mount it. So I cut a few inches off the bottom of the column, Machined a Delrin sleeve to hold the quickener centered inside of the column, Fab'd up a bracket to mount it and cut/welded up the shafts to connect all of the dots. I bought a new steering joint to replace the aluminum one on the stock lower shaft. Once everything was all welded up I got the column put all back together and back in the truck.

Luckily the column fit with no issues. There is a noticeable increase in steering effort due to the gear multiplication. I have one driven the truck a little bit since getting this all installed. Currently I have the smaller diameter Sparco wheel in the truck. I might stick the stock wheel back in to see if the larger diameter will help with effort. If the larger wheel helps I will either stick with that steering wheel or get a larger diameter aftermarket wheel.

I am going to be bringing the truck into work later on this week to hopefully get going on my manual transmission swap as well. More updates as they happen.

Sorry to go off topic, but I think you have the same butane torch that a buddy of mine did.
His exploded in his hand and removed his right thumb.
After seeing the photos of his right hand and arm, I showed the photos to the guys in my shop, and it turns out almost HALF of them have the same torch.
I can find and post the photos of the torch if you'd like to make sure.

Question:
What is the diameter of the steering quickeners housing? Especially the part you slid into the steering column (i assume you made that black bushing yourself?).
Thank you!

I really like that idea and i am rolling it around my head. Maybe that's something for the D170 as well (the Ram steering rack has 2.75 : 1 steering ratio).

Thanks a lot. I just drove the truck to work this morning. The steering is definitely stiffer. I'm not sure if I might be getting some slight binding on one of the u-joints. Going to be trying a larger wheel later today and see how that does.

The Quickener body that slides into the column is 1.250". I did make the bushing myself on the lathe. It's made of a stick of Delrin I had left over from when I made my leaf spring shackle bushings. I would refer you to a picture of those but I haven't had time to update them yet.

I'll have some pictures of the harness bar back up shortly. I'll also be making one for Claudia's Silverado too. We just got some new seats and harnesses for her and I need to get them installed by the next NMCA event in September.

The quickener is working alright. I do feel some 'bind' in it still. I'm not sure if it might be because it wasn't properly lubricated or not. I've got another stock column I am going to stick back in it so I can drive it. And I'll open up the quickener and see if the resistance I am feeling is in the unit it's self or in the u-joint or maybe the rack.

Well I finally got the manual trans swapped in the truck. This has been something I've wanted to do way back when I got the truck. Now it's finally in there and ready to play.

I'm not going to post up too many pictures of the swap because there will eventually be a Street Trucks Magazine article about the swap in the upcoming months. But here are a few pictures of the install. I've got a few miles on the truck so far. Still need to wire up the reverse lights and the neutral safety switch on the clutch pedal. Also need to play with the tune a little and get the throttle follower from hanging up and to correct the speedo. Other than that it works great and I can't wait to see how it performs. More pictures and info to come.

Man that sucks about the thrust bearing. I had a 80 swap in my fullsize eat up the 6.0 and the 416 before I realized what was going on. I was not using spacers. But glad that you made it to ls fest. I finally made it to the ls fest east with the s10. The build looks good. The 6 speed is the way to go.

Figured I better update this thread. Had a few issued with the truck after the transmission swap. I was having a throttle issue where the truck would go into limp mode on a long second gear pull. To try and narrow down the issue I swapped the 90mm LS3 and X-Link out for a stock throttle body. This ended up not fixing the issue and kept me from running the truck at one of the autocross events I went to. After looking at the tune file for the 100th time I realized the problem was with the Calculated Airmass vs TPS vs RPM table and Part of the segment swap. Made some adjustments and the problem was fixed.

Then at the last NMCA event of the year I got a few runs out of the truck before I lost the clutch. At first I thought it was the throwout bearing locking up, but after towing it home and tearing it apart I found out the pilot bearing failed. Part of it hurt end the sleeve that the throwout bearing rides on and kept it from extending completely. Unfortunately with the pilot bearing out, the input shaft of the trans chewed up the inside of the pilot bearing and now there is a slight amount of play in the input shaft. Going to swap out the input shaft and pilot bearing for a bushing and get the truck back out and get it dialed in.

While the truck was dawn I also started my own Flex Fuel conversion. Which I had wanted to do for a while. After seeing a few companies' setups I realized I had almost all of the pieces leftover from other projects to build my own. Not bad for less than $100 in parts. Haven't messed with the tune part of it yet, but I will when I get the truck back up and running.

Overall it's a bummer that I wasn't able to get some solid events out of the truck this year but I have a lot planned for next year. A few f those plans including swapping a 6 speed into Claudia's truck along with some more power and potentially some new brake/suspension parts for both trucks. Stay tuned. :burnout:

Thanks for the updates.
Shame something as small as a pilot bearing can take out a vehicle. :(

Yeah and to having something that small cause as much damage as it did. Oh well. That's how it goes sometimes.

Sorry for the delay. I ended up getting sick last weekend while trying to post this. Still recovering so I've got a bit of down time to play catch up.

I have the transmission back in one piece and back in the truck. It was installed with a new Centerforce throwout bearing and a bronze pilot bushing. While I had the transmission out I took the time to pull the front cover off the transmission and make sure the nothing else was damaged when the pilot bearing failed. Everything in the front of the trans looked ok so that was re-assembled and I finished getting the output shaft bearing kit put in. One of the snap rings and a spacer were missing from the kit so I had Rockland send those out.

I also finally got my fiberglass hood on the truck. Not wanting a cowl/drag race style hood I ended up finding McNeil Off Road had a fiberglass stock replacement hood for the 03-05 trucks. The fitment is pretty good and it bolts up to the stock hinges. Mc Neil says it can be made to work with the factory latch as well, but I didn't want to cut the rivets off the stock hood hinge catch in case I had any problems with the glass hood. From the start of the hood project I wanted to install a Z28/1LE Vent extractor so I found a GM one while searching eBay.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/01/wgzMlrC-1.jpg

I ended up pulling the stock latch off completely and saving it with the old hood. I found a good deal on a set of Aero Catch Latches to keep it in place. I opted for the steel pin/locking versions for added security. Now that I had all of the pieces it was time to start cutting... Measure ten times and cut once.

To be continued...

Not wanting the hole for the vent to look like an after-thought, I decided to fiberglass in the opening to help the hood keep it's shape and strengthen it back up. That was my first time playing with fiberglass and it wasn't too bad. knowing it was going to be a sticky, itchy process I kept covered up and it kept the scratching to a minimum.

I'm really pleased with how the hood turned out. Now I just have to figure out what to do about the mismatching color... Maybe a color change coming to the truck soon.

Correct. California is a terrible place to have a performance car these days. Roadkill had a project truck stolen around the same time too. Better believe I'll be locking mine down when I take it to events out there.

Wow. Mike Musto had a pretty sweet Monte Carlo (1970?) stolen last summer.
That's a pretty high profile vehicle, I certainly wouldn't want it hiding in my garage. Hell... you'd never be able to drive it.
People are so bold these days....

Hey guys sorry for the delayed reply. I am still working on my truck (The gray 2004 Silverado) And the new project, a 2005 Colorado. I have tons of info and pictures but I have been so busy that I forget to post any of it. I am working on uploading pictures now though.

The truck that was stolen was my girlfriends Black 2006 Silverado. Our house was broken into February 13, 2018 and the scumbags were able to get away with her truck... Nothing was ever recovered from the truck. It completely vanished. I had tons of people scouring the internet and local areas looking for it but not a single piece of it was ever found.

So after a rough couple of months we were coming up on LS fest west and we both had already bought tickets for it. So I decided to take my daily driver (05 Colorado) and build it for LS fest. It was a ton of work but I was able to pull it off in a months time. I'll have all the info from the build up soon. I appreciate you guys following along.

Thanks for chiming in a clearing it all up for us. I'd personally love to see a build thread on that Colorado. The thought crossed my mind a few months ago that one of those with an LS would make a killer little truck for autox. Great minds think alike.
