Rear Glass Tint Question

I am having the vinyl top put back on, along with a few other minor items (pass side mirror, some missing interior trim, etc).

I spoke with the body shop and they remove the rear glass as part of the vinyl top install, and we both agreed that would be a great way to tint the back glass on the bench. This would allow a super clean and easy install, right up to the edge of the glass, leaving just enough bare glass for the urethane to re-install. Once installed there would be no noticeable edge on the tint.

The body shop farms out the tint work to a local shop, when they spoke the tint shop said they would NOT tint the glass on the bench, because it would get dust on the glass. He is only willing to tint the glass while it's installed. The body shop manager any myself don't really understand the logic. If he's concerned about dust falling down onto the glass while working, then have somebody hold it upright. That would be the same as tinting the upright glass in any door.

So, my question is this... Those of you with tinted A-bodies (or any other vehicle with similar interior and exterior trim around rear glass) how did the shop tint the glass? Installed or removed? And can you see an edge?

Tint guy I have used here in Indy told me the same thing.
And if he has someone standing there holding the glass, they will probably charge for two people. Just a thought.

I tint for a living. This is true if u lay the glass flat but they can have someone hold the glass up on the edge and it's good that way ur tint will look much better that way u don't have to fight the trim and urethane I have tinted for 31 years good luck

Absolutely tint it out of the car for all the reasons you listed. Just stand the glass up vertical when you peel the clear and clean the glass. I would also let it sit out in the sun tinted-side-down for a day or two before re-installing it.

Thanks guys. I called a tint/detail shop I've used in the past, and they are willing to tint the glass out of the car. So I'm going to have the body shop remove all the glass, I'll deliver it to the tint shop myself, and then return it to the body shop so they can reinstall.

Interesting, I've always had all glass tinted out of the car whenever possible, my tint guy prefers it. Never noticed if it's vertical or not, but that makes sense. I was trying to lay a screen protector on my phone yesterday, and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't keep the %$@!% dirt off the screen! I imagine window tinting would be worse.
