For almost 15 years now I have had the honor of knowing both Dan and RJ Gotlieb, the owners of the '69 Camaro known as Big Red. I have been aware of it, like so many others, since that very first article in Hot Rod Magazine naming it the "Baddest Camaro Ever". Big Red has inspired me through the years to someday build a Camaro to run some of the events it has. Like many others in the Pro-Touring community, Big Red has been looked at as the holy grail of bad-ass Camaros and rightfully so. From events like the La Carrera Panamericana, the Silver State Classic and the Virginia City Hill Climb; from high speed runs in the desert to the standing mile events this car, above all, has inspired and motivated many.
Despite myself having followed Big Red for some time, there was so much that I was unaware of until recently. You see, last week my wife Susan and I were invited to a private screening with RJ and Josh Oliver (the producer) where we watched episodes 1 and 4 of their new TV show called Big Red: The Original Outlaw Racer. While Susan and I really enjoyed the episodes, our reasons for liking the show were very different. Susan enjoyed the suspense and how well it brought you into the overall excitement of the races and I enjoyed the show for its lack of fake drama and true-to-life adventure.
The show plays out like a very well done documentary that artfully combines the thrills of racing with historical background. You get to see the good and the bad, the failures and the triumphs -- the way it really went. I do have a suggestion for you while watching the show: if you have a sound system connected to your TV you are going to want to warn the neighbors and crank up the volume. We were fortunate enough to watch the show in a theater with a nice surround sound system and when RJ ran Big Red up the Virginia City Hill Climb it literally gave me goose bumps! The footage was amazing to watch and it makes me want to run that event one day –albeit at about half the speed that RJ did. I don't want to spoil the show, but I can tell you it takes some serious… uh, ‘nerves’ to run up that hill flat-out.
Big Red: The Original Outlaw Racer is a great show and I hope that someday it's available on DVD because I will buy it and keep it, just like I’ve kept the issue of Hot Rod Magazine with Big Red on the cover.
Watch the show live each Monday night on NBCSN at 9:00pm (ET) if you can. and make sure you record it as well. Like myself, I'm sure you will want to watch it again. It's that awesome!
Please note there's a glitch that NBCSN is fixing. Until the description in the GUIDE is fixed, you have to record the 9PM EST time slot of "Field Sports."

Thanks Larry! Your kind words about the show are much appreciated. Unfortunately the network doesn't support surround sound, but that's how it's been produced. The sound will still make the hair on you neck stand up. :) Since we do have it produced in surround sound and we plan on doing a DVD release or some sort of release, you'll get a chance to hear it at its fullest effect.
Thanks again!

Tony,
Where are you located? NASCAR switched from FOX to NBCSN. We're on the same channel as NASCAR is now. I'd be surprised if you didn't get NBCSN and NASCAR, but anything is possible. Maybe search for NASCAR and you'll find us showing on that channel.
Keep us posted! Thanks!

A question about the red flag just before BR crossed the finish line. What was the determination, did the red flag effect the run or no?

Steve,
Not privy to any of the conversations the SSCC had on the decision. In the end it would appear that they ruled that Big Red had passed the last checkpoint and ultimately the finish line as the red flag was deployed. Had the flag come out while BR was passing one of the checkpoint/flagger stations within the course he would have pulled over to stop and like all the other drivers behind him, would have not completed the course. But the first red flag BR saw was at the finish line and so he proceeded to the slow down area where he could safely clear the course and make way for the emergency vehicles that would deploy from the finish line end of the course.

You've got to find a friend with a DVR! ;) Time is my problem. I do not have any. I work two jobs 7 days a week. Will it be offered for purchase in dvd or digital form in the future?

Finally got a chance to watch it last night. Great show! I like that it's a little more documentary style, not at all like modern "reality tv". Looking forward to the upcoming episodes!

72LeMans,
Sorry to hear that you work so much. The plan is to have these episodes available on BluRay or some other format online so everyone will be able to see the show in the long run. :)

Thanks for having good taste in a show. You are among the many that seem to like more than the contrived "reality" TV you would normally see. :)

Thanks Cobra 498! We didn't go the typical route of "reality TV", because we wanted something real for our fans...and for ourselves. We wanted something authentic. Hope that really comes through.

Tony H, Thanks for the kind words. Good eye! Wondered when that may get brought up. That was older footage from a LaCarrera race where we lost a little control and ran off the course. Everything was still safe and operational (due to the well-designed chassis), so we continued the race. Rubbing's racing! ;)

Vanzuuk1,
We've got a lot of long term fans that go way back to the October 1988 Car Craft magazine and then Hot Rod. Thanks for giving us a little credit. ;)
BTW: Cool Camaro!

Can you give us any details on the suspension you are running? Especially the rear? I'm assuming that is a full float 9"?
Also what happened to the "bullet" motor? Did you ever figure out what the metallic debris was from?
Lastly- Great show! Like the others said, thanks for no BS drama!

If they listened to everyone in Hollywood, it would have been a completely different series.
If you don't follow the @TheBigRedCamaro Instagram feed, you should. Many detail shots get posted that don't show up anywhere else.
