I was given the idea to turn my 2001 Monte Carlo into a RWD car by making my own chassis for it and building a full cage inside and new floors and everything (the car has a rusty underbody as it is so it wouldn't bother me to cut it apart for this kind of thing)

but my real question is what would everyone here think of a RWD LS powered 01 Monte Carlo and have you ever seen (or done) a front wheel to rear wheel drive car yourself

There was a John Moss built GMPP green rwd Monte Carlo in hot rod years back. It was a bright green and had a 572 crate motor.

Tallant's Hot Rod Shop did a 2003 Cadillac DTS (RWD w/572).

good god i was just thinking of that car and was wondering if i was the only one ....was a awesome color. i remember hot rod (i think) did a spread on it and a few other cars at the same time . if i remember correctly it even had 335 rears which at the time was sorta a rare thing . kinda amazing how you remember certain cars . That had to be at least 15 yrs ago

I seem to remember that the roof, hood, grill, and trunk lid were widened to allow them to use a
Camaro/Firebird chassis. With so much of the engineering already done they really dropped the
ball by not putting it into production. But hey, it wasn't the first or last time GM screwed up.
There are a lot of RWD conversions on the drag strips but they use a dedicated drag chassis.

It had a wide body treatment too. That magazine had several of their factory built cats that were just nuts.

Article with pics. It did have 335's. No 572 though. It was a 406.

RWD in a good looking car is always a great idea.

I'd love to do a 60's Toronado some day. They're still fairly cheap to pick up.

A Monte SS and a Lumina Z34 are the two cars that I have wanted to build rear drive versions of for a long time.

If you are looking for ideas how to go about it and see how much space some stuff needs one interesting place to visit would probably a regional NHRA sportsman event. A lot of comp, super comp, and super stock racers have converted cars.

I'm probably going with 90's camaro suspension if I decide to make a project out of my monte

Since the Monte will already be a strut it shouldn't be too difficult to go that route. Mostly a matter of checking to make sure you have enough room to get some tire under the car, I think the stock Monte tire is only a 225 section or something like that

The 3rd gen F-body suspension is not coil on strut so you would also have to look into a conversion. If you have a circle track shop around you can go the cheap and effective route with a slip on sleeve type coil over kit and you will end up with limitless spring rates to choose from.

I'm more than likely cutting the whole bottom out of the car (it's rusty) and mounting the suspension on the new chassis I'm going to build and hide the roll cage the best I can within the interior under panels and behind the dash the only things that will really be different on the interior will be the steering wheel and the bits I can't hide from the cage for the harness mounting and the door bars with racing seats and 5 point harnesses the exterior I want to keep as normal as I can with the exception of tires and rims

Tell what-

Why don't you ask the mods to move this into project updates- Maybe Rename the thread, and if it progresses, turn it into a build thread
