The Speedway Motors CAM Challenge East powered by SCCA is just under a month away! In addition to the 2 days of competition, there will be a test & tune on Friday with guest instructors Robbie and Al Unser Jr. Also there will be cruise-ins / meet & greets on Wednesday at Gateway Classic Cars in Indianapolis and Thursday at Ivy Tech / Kokomo Classic Car Museum in Kokomo. But that's not all! There will be a welcome party on Friday evening near the site and a dinner on Saturday evening. There will be a vendors display area all weekend on site as well!

It sounds like Friday will be a blast SSLance. Having all CAM cars at a test and tune with a welcome party to boot sounds like a great start to the weekend.

We'll be there in the fake CAM car. We ran at Peru last weekend for the first time, lots of grip and lots of room for a big open course.
In case anyone is wondering, there is a BP gas station with a subway less than a mile from the race site if you need either kind of fuel.

Crazy idea of the night, anyone with 93-02 Fbody have rims and tires to rent? or trade for some hoosier runs in the future?
If not those maybe a co drive?
Names Ryan Finch, won the MIS autocross at optima and won kentucky match tour and toledo pro solo in esp, thanks.

It should be night and day different than any Good Guys course you've ever been on Dan...
The Nationals style courses are large, fast, and fun!!!

And the CAM Challenge course was designed with our cars in mind. Most Grissom courses average 45-60 seconds long. The concrete surface there has tons of grip and is almost billiard table smooth and flat. So, at the CAM Challenge East you're going to get a well designed course on a great surface with a good combination of challenging sections with plenty on-throttle time for an autocross.
Within a half mile of the site there are both BP and Marathon gas stations, a Subway and a new bar & grill called Wings. While camping isn't allowed on site, we work with the Grissom Air Force Museum and they allow primitive camping in their parking lot for a nominal fee. Indy Region members Chris Brake and Stefanie Stribling host movie showings at the camp site during most Grissom events and they will be doing it for CAM East. Everyone camping brings some food and drink, lawn chairs, and watch classic car and racing movies projected on the side of Chis & Stef' trailer. It's a FUN time!
There are some Grissom specific things everyone should be aware of. It's an old bomber tarmac so there is NO shade, best to bring a pop-up or someway to get out of the sun. There will be a tent for awards and the Saturday evening dinner near grid but nothing but concrete and open sky in the paddock and spectator areas. As I mentioned before, there is no overnight camping on site but you can leave trailers and cars on site. Security is excellent provided by the Indiana Air National Guard and the site is completely fenced in, gated and locked at night. Alcohol is not allowed on site either but is welcome at the camp-site. We will of course have porta-potties on site but we will also have food vendors there on Saturday and Sunday. If you prefer, you are welcome to bring your own provisions and grill in the paddock.

That's about the best description of the site and event that I've ever seen. Thanks Dave!!
Grissom is by far my favorite site to autocross at. Huge grip, lots of track possibilities, secure overnight parking and I highly recommend the camping.
If your on the fence about this event, don't be. The organizers are top notch and I have yet to be disappointed at one of their events.
P.S. Grissom and Indy SCCA has hosted multiple One Lap of America events with great success.

Well looks like I'm co driving, now just trying to figure out the lodging arrangements. Everyone in CAM C needs to watch out for David Feighner in that 15 GT, he's screaming this year.

Is this one more geared toward the grizzled vets? Or is it novice friendly?
SSLance
07-24-2015, 05:49 AM
There are going to be some of the fastest cars and drivers around competing there...but also some novices having just as much fun. There is no reason you wouldn't have just as much fun there as anyone else. All of the people there would get a kick out of watching your car run.
If you do sign up and go, just let people know you are a novice and ask if you have any questions, I have yet to be at any of these events where everyone didn't go out of their way to make sure the novices have the best experience they can at the event.

While there will be some real heavy hitters at CAM East, utilizing SCCA's Match Tour format will level the playing field during Sunday's Shootouts. The format is fun, and gives everyone a bunch of seat time. You will have a good time, guaranteed.

Looking at the entry list, you may want to split CAM-C into "Late model Mustangs" and "Everything else". :)
Out of curiosity, aside from a lower vehicle weight being allowed, what's the criteria for CAM-Sport? I don't see a year cutoff and right now the entrants in that category are all over the place (Chevelle, late 70s Camaro, '65 Cobra, and a 2007 Pontiac Solstice).
Feeling pretty out-gunned in CAM-C with my humble G-body, so perhaps that may be a better spot for those of us that are in CAM-C due to the year cutoff for CAM-T?

CAM-S is for two seat cars...or more specifically cars that were built as a two seater. I believe there are some registration mistakes on the entry list that will be corrected before the event.
We'll just have to take our lumps this year Dave and hope for some more equitable class structure in the upcoming year.

And hopefully, they (SCCA) will allow the C4 Corvettes run next year. I would hope that SCCA realize that having a class (CAM-S) for only 2 Cobras does not make sense and this class would be perfect for the C4 Corvettes. There is no doubt that Bruce and Scott will dominate the class but, as the late Larry Park would say, don't let that Cobra beat you, get your ass out there and drive better than him. You can't win by bitching you can only win by your foot.

Actually CAM-S is for ANY American car pre-1979 with a 107" wheelbase or smaller, or that weighs less than 3000lbs, or is a two seater. We have a Mustang II, a Maverick, and a 2600 lb Falcon that run in ours...

There is no model year restriction in CAM/S. Here are the class rules for CAM/S:
"CAM‐S (Sports)
Seating originally for 2 or more adults
Wheelbase, minimum (inches).......................................... .................................................. ..... 90
Weight, minimum (lbs.) .................................................. .................................................. ..... 2350
Weight, minimum (lbs.) w/ Lexan® windshield .................................................. ...... 2500
o NOTE: In 2016, OE or equivalent windshields will be required in keeping with
CAM philosophy of “no race cars.”
Side windows may be replaced with Lexan® or equivalent and operating
mechanism may be removed or changed.
Interior floor covering may be removed."
CAM/S isn't restricted to just 2 seaters, but allow 2 seaters. If you have a 4 seat car or a truck that goes further than what is allowed in the other CAM classes, CAM/S is there for you. If some of the people currently in CAM/C for the purpose of being more competitive want to move to CAM/S, have at it!
We're working on the 2016 rules and we're looking hard at how the classes are split, and some of the cars that are now excluded.

CAM Challenge is happening this weekend! If you're looking for something to do, come to Grissom and enjoy the show. In addition to the cars and the action, there will be a vendor's midway, concessions on site, and every entry is a pit pass. The absolute best part? Spectator entry is FREE!

I had a great time this weekend despite some engine woes on Friday. It was tough not to drive the big red sled on that great course, but a buddy let me co-drive his Fox Mustang on Saturday. Big Red didn't quite make it home, the motor gave up the ghost 14 miles into Ohio (about three hours from home). I finally got her home yesterday and I'll start the autopsy today or tomorrow. I'll be back next year ready to run!

That's the first SCCA race I've done, and the wide-open course was awesome.
I also get to do a little autopsy this week, since my transmission got stuck in gear a couple more times on the way home. Hopefully some new shifter bushings will solve it.
Are there plans for doing it again next year? If so, I'm in!

Thanks Lance, it was nice to meet you there. She'll be back next year and I will always drive the same way, to have fun. I kinda bummed I didn't get to run it on the big course, she would have loved the big sweepers. Alex, sorry to hear your tranny acted up again, but I'm sure it's easier to fix at home than in the pits. They are doing it again next year, they mentioned it on their facebook page. I can't wait!

Haha yes, much less stressful to tinker at home. Good luck on the engine rebuild. Think it's still mostly salvageable?

James Bishir showed up in his beautiful Grand National and had never autocrossed before...ever. I believe he'd tell you that he had a blast. For a complete newbie to get course walks with tutelage from Mary Pozzi and Kyle Tucker...it doesn't get any better than that. By the 9th run on Sunday it looked like he was getting pretty comfortable at getting around the huge course.
So yes, even though this field was stacked with ringer drivers in over the top cars, it was still very novice friendly.

We did have a gathering before hand in the form of the Friday night Welcome party. We held it at the Outpost Bar & Grill @ Bunker Hill Dragstrip just a couple miles away from Grissom. Falken Tire sponsored it and gave you $10 "Welcome Party Cash" for food and drink. Hopefully we can do it again next year as the facility is for sale.

I got it torn down yesterday, she spun a rod bearing on #6 (so far) lots of junk in the oil but nothing looks broken and the damage to the crank looks minimal. I'm taking it to a machine shop in the next day or so.

I think everyone had a few things that they would change about the event. Mine was that we weren't informed of the extra charge for the Friday Test and Tune after I had already taken off work to be there. On the flip side though, out of all of the events I have attended over the years, I have never been to one (especially a first year event) that ran as smooth as this one. I accredit the great success of this event to the wonderful volunteers that were working to make this happen while we were still in our hotel rooms and camp sites.
I want to publicly thank Dave Dusterberg and his wonderful wife who gave up there entire weekend to work for us even though he couldn't drive his car. Not only that, he loaned his car to not one but two drivers for the weekend. People like Dave is what makes events like this happen and makes the CAM/Pro-Touring group come together as a family.
I will without a doubt be doing this event again next year. Well done and THANK YOU!!!!!!

Nice to meet you, too. I really like the Buick! After some more inspection, a couple of rods were damaged by heat and after I got the crank out it looked pretty rough. I'll have her up and running soon, she'll be back to her old self in no time. A cruise in on Friday night would be cool in Peru or Kokomo, maybe a cookout at a local park?
