I've been looking at the dynamat extreme for my 68 firebird but it's pretty pricey. Does anyone have any other suggestions or is dynamat the way to go? Also how much will I need for the entire car (roof, trunk, floors, doors, firewall)? Thanks for the help!

I've used Dynamat, Dynamat lite and RamMat. I actually liked the Dynamat lite the best

this stuff is the best performing product at it's pricepoint. also it's nearly as good as the top rated deadener... to the point where the difference would be almost negligible. especially in our situation

dont forget to top it with a closed cell foam:

also, you can save money by following the 20% rule

The 20% rule? Also how many sqft do I need for my car? Thanks for the help!

Were a dealer for Hushmat, they're well priced and same kind of quality as Dynamat. There are also vehicle specific kits that provide oversize cuts for each area of the car, and price per square foot isn't really any more.
Hushmat is the only stuff that has OE certifications too.

Read this article. I'll try to find an independent test for most of the deadeners out there. The two higher rated products were from knuconceptz and sound deadener showdown

Dynomat is kn the pricy side and when compared to 40 plus other competitor brands they perform about middle of the pack from what i remember

I can post link to CLD test thread and post top performing 3 brands..which was SDS, Murdermat and knulonceptz kollosis in that order
i should also have a spread sheet of some of the results with pricing

Will the Dynamat extreme keep the heat out if applied to the roof or do you need to add the padding ect to it?

Has anyone used the carinsulation.com, peel and seal or fat mat that was listed on the link above? If so how were your results?

Also real question shiild be what are you trying to acomplish

CLD matting like being discussed is to stop panel resonance (structual vibration) it wont help with heat nor air bourne noise
these will need entirely different products
ie thermal matting, Closed Cell Foam(Decoupler) and Mass Loaded Vinyl(air bourne)

all junk in regards to sound damping
results start on page 9 i believe. .not my results but chris from CA has done all the testing
various forum members like me either sent samples for testing or contacted companies to send a sample to him for testing.
Peel n seel and fat mat (rebranded peel n seel) are the worst performing products
it does dampen but out of the main frequency of what you need ..plus its asphalt based..can smell in summer
.will dry out over time and work less effectivly then it already does

Car insulation isnt even a sound nor vibration dampner( no constraining layer )
from grape vine its rebranded ez cool by low e
Ive argued with the guy selling it..he doesnt want to hear it..as hes just a window tinter looking to offer an upsale..
Car insulation should just be advertised as a thermal insulation as thats the only thing itll ne good for

No it wont
Dynamat is a CLD which is to absorb panel resonance/ding sounds like from rain drops
It absorbs that in return create heat
my bro did 100% coverage of dynomat extreme on his mav floor pans and i cant even lay my left foot on pan on passenger side or my foot feels like its on fire
Sound insulation companies like to make claims that their product does everything... structural sound, air Bourne sound and heat control...when in fact they only do 1 and fail miserably at the rest
you can do 25 % coverage of the CLD for the headliner then do a layer of heat matting like heatwave pro or perhaps carinsulation or lava shield

So what would be the ideal set up for sound and thermal protection? I (probably like everybody else) want thermal and sound protection.

We usually do Dynamat or Hushmat then cover with Dynaliner or Silencer Megabond by Hushmat. For the most protection, BoomMat makes UnderCarpetLite to help the heat even more.
Also helps to do what you can to the exhaust, like coat it, heat shield around it, etc. just think about what OE does.

Just about any butyl based CLD is good skip the butemin/asphalt type
thats your first layer

Secondskin audios heatwave pro..or some other brand thermal matting like car insulation, or lavashield (not sure how these compare to each other..tempted to buy and test)
Then top layer you can do second skin audios luxery liner pro which has closed cell foam melted (not glued) to mass loaded vinyl.
or you can do seperated layer of CCF then MLV

Depends on how well you want a quiet ride

It seems like the roof is limited in how thick you can build up. With a layer of dynamat , there is only so much room left in the middle where the cross bars snap in for the headliner material. I currently have only the dynamat installed in the roof of my Bel Air. Even on a cloudy day the interior is very warm to the touch. Next up will be some type of thermal product.
