We're planning on spending a day and night in New Orleans following the Power Tour. Any locals or frequenters have suggestions as to things we oughta see and do while we're there? Places to avoid?

Lunch at Willie Mays Scotch House. Skip most of Burbon St except for Fritzels and Lafittes. Hit Frenchman St instead.

Lafitte's is a must, cafe du'Monde, ghost tour if you have time. Preservation hall too. Went there for our honeymoon 3 years ago and back again this March. Hoping to visit again in another 3 or 4 years. Its a blast!

I'm assuming you're finishing up in Baton Rouge. If so, I'd stop by Oak Alley Plantation along the way. It's a short detour about halfway between the two cites. I've been to New Orleans 5 or 6 times and done Oak Alley twice.

As much as people will advise against it, I think you have to see Bourbon St. at night, even if only for a couple of minutes. We love Mr. B's Bistro on Royal St. for lunch or dinner...Great food and great service. Acme Oyster house on Iberville St. as long as the line isn't too long, otherwise The Bourbon House right next door does good oysters as well, also has more bourbon than you can imagine.

Lot's of good music around town. Most of the free stuff on Bourbon is only ok, and they all turn into dance clubs pretty early. And if you're over 30, you'll feel old! Biegnet's for breakfast at Cafe Du Monde...it's messy, but worth it! Everyone raves about Commander's Palace for dinner. I've eaten there twice and don't think it worth the money, and it's probably no where near where you are staying.

If you're into walking tours, check out a ghost tour, voodoo tour, cemetery tour, or garden district tour. Walk the French Quarter, take in the old architecture.
