I think my Impala smells.

I just replaced the gas tank (the old one had a cracked weld) and I'm certain the fuel lines are new, attached, and the breather is in place. The fuller the tank is, the more fumes I get I the garage. Is this normal or should I be looking for something wrong?

My Firebird smells too. It has never really bothered me, I just chalk it up to being an old car.

Fuel evaporation leads to the gas odors. If you have an open element air cleaner (as most hot rods / classics do) you'll get odor from fuel evaporating out of the wet manifold as well as the fuel bowls (assuming carbureted). You will also get evaporation from the fuel tank itself if you're using a vented gas cap. Lots of guys have switched to unvented caps and added dedicated fuel tank vents, but I've not yet had first hand experience to know how well they work.
