I installed some new wheels and tires on my 1956 F100 today.

The wheels are MMD Kage. 19" x 10" on all four corners with Michelin PSS tires in 285/35-19 all around (26.9" OD). The wheels are cheap at about $200 bucks each, and made in China obviously. Not my first choice. But they weigh 24 lbs each which is not bad, and they have a decent lip which to me looks better on an older truck like this. Per my spreadsheet, with the 7.2" backspace these wheels have, and my KPI etc, my scrub radius is about 1/4" which is good.

I knew the backspace would probably tuck the wheels in too far, and this turned out to be true. In order to keep the scrub radius I will build some new longer control arms to push the front wheels out. The rears I'll add spacers for now. Then eventually, when I can get the wheels I really want, I'll know exactly what size to get.

I was originally going to get 18" wheels but got worried they would just look too small on a truck. So I got 19" wheels and I'm glad I did, since even these looks a bit small.

I did not like the gloss black spokes with polished lips on the wheels when I got them, since this truck is supposed to look like an old beater on the outside. So I had the wheels sandblasted and now they are raw aluminum. It did not turn out the way I had hoped, the color is too blueish. Maybe that will get better as they age and oxidize. Otherwise I might hit them with a rattle can to try something else.

Nice truck :smoke:
I went with 20x12 and 18x10 with 4 backspace.
The front wheels didn't clear the fenders :hand:

Bummer. Yeah it is tough to get the correct backspace (offset), especially when each project is essentially a one-off (hot rods that is).

With something like say, a BMW M3, you can draw on the experience of others, since you all have exactly the same boundary conditions.

Very nice. I have a 56 as well and I am thinking 18's due to tire selection and cost. Hmmmmm

The sandblasted look in brilliant, and I don't have an issue with the blue ting. Do you have a photo of them in their blingy starting point?

After some contemplation and introspection, I am leaning strongly towards painting the wheels dark bronze. Please shield your eyes if horrible photoshopping offends you. But I did a very crude rendering just for me to get a "feel" for what it might look like. I also added 3 other body mods. I wonder if anyone can spot them?

As the truck is now:

Speaking of tire selection only, I am pretty picky about the tire outside diameter. On a '69 Camaro, you'd go for about 26" OD. But on a truck, which is a taller vehicle, my opinion is that the tire should be larger in overall diameter (based on looks, not performance). My original tires and wheels took this to the extreme, with the fronts measuring 29" in diameter and the rears at 30". However the ride sucked and I could not turn very tightly at all which started to be a real pain. I finally accepted that what I needed was a quality performance tire in a more standard size. And I did not want to get locked into to some esoteric size with limited availability. So I always do a search on Tire Rack with tire size as the criteria to see how many selections come up. For 285/35-19 it was something like 48 choices. That's a lot better than 4 or 5 that you get for some tire sizes. That assures me I won't be designing suspension parts and offsets around a tire size that I won't be able to get down the road.

Here are some pics of my old front and rear tires compared to the new ones:

And some weights of tires and wheels. Old Front, Old Rear, New (all four corners):

That is awesome. I'm not sure I would have had the vision to sand blast those. They look 8000x better. I run a dark bronze wheel on my black truck, you can pop over to my build thread and see photos. I don't have any great photos on my computer at this exact moment or I'd post one. With the finish of your truck, I'd reco a matte or dull clear to keep the vibe.

Love the way it is, don't like the bronze or at least that particular shade.

What is the OD of your current wheel setup? Body mods are front axle centreline is forward [good] front fender hangs lower [bad] and rear box issue is 1 piece?

I like the current look and also like the bronze idea. They look like the Kinesis wheel with their shot peen finish

The current tires have a 26.9" OD

Two out of three on the body mods! The last mod is that I shifted the rear axle and fenders forward about 3 inches. So that the amount of bed in front of the fender is equal to that behind the fender. This would be great for weight distribution and I think it might look pretty good too.

Good call on the matte clear.

Yes, I've seen your truck with the dark bronze wheels and it looks great in my opinion.

You also posted this pic from a show in one of your posts. I really like the theme here, although the splitter is a tad large and I'm not too hip on trucks with rear spoilers. It just stops being a truck at that point to me.

This would be a cool wheel finish. If I knew how to achieve it!

Those are really awesome, You have a deep offset for good scrub but still have wide lips. Love it!

Do you know the od of the wheels in this picture? The wheels are 17". Those tires are 29" front and 30" rear which I think was mentioned earlier in the thread.
