View Full Version : Do you really DRIVE your car?

So, I am curious what all of you have to say. I used to go to a lot of car shows, park my car and talk to people. Just over a year ago I decided to overcome my anxiety and try the autocross at a Goodguys event...and I was hooked. Now, there are literally thousands of you posting and chatting on pro-touring, lateral-g etc and thousands of cars at events like the Goodguys but only a handful that actually hit the autocross....my question is why?
if you are like me, it was somewhat intimidating to watch these guys run and I thought I would look like a fool if I took my car out there. Well, I could not have been more wrong. I have been introduced to a new family. This family is different from most other motorsports in that everyone helps everyone. You will never feel foolish and if you mess up you will be in good company...because everybody does and we laugh with each other about it.
So, I know there are tons of you who live within driving distance of Nashville. Goodguys is coming to Nasville in 2 weeks and I personally would love to see a bunch of new faces out on the autocross. This is an invitation to you. Bring your car out, see what it will do. You will have the time of your life and I promise you this...if you have any questions come talk to me or any of the other pro drivers...we will help you in any way we can.
Are you ready? Let's have some fun!

Why haven't I? I guess partially because I don't want to do anything half-assed. I had my 98 Pontiac Trans Am that might have been okay, but it had over 200k miles when I sold it a few months ago. I guess the practice would have been good, but I'd rather do it in a proper car to begin with, rather than a sloppy stock, worn out car (and frag an engine on a car I knew was going up for sale soon). So I've got my 71 Firebird with all new Ridetech suspension ready to go on that I hope to have on the road early next year, and my cheap 82 Camaro... which ironically replaced my 98 Trans Am, but it's a simpler and lighter car. I won't be a champion with that car, but I'll at least be able to have some fun.

Josh, thanks for the honesty. I completely understand what you are saying and would offer this...as soon as practical, run the autocross. As you get to know your car, your parts list will change. my Camaro was state of the art in this sport 7 years ago...In the last 3 months I have updated a long list of items on the car and continue to do so. It is really hard to tell what you need to update until you start driving and pushing. My new iFS designed and built by Rob at No Limit was a major leap forward in the cars handling and it showed me that the ergonomics in the car needed to be changed. The ergonomics let me feel what. The car was doing much better which is now leading me to spring and sway bar changes....there is just no end. It just. Depends how competative you...and your wallet, are. In the end this is about having fun and believe me, getting any of your cars out and driving would be fun.
I look forward to seeing your '71 in action....cheers to you!
I think a lot of people are intimidated by the "fast" guys...Chris Smith, Rob McGreagor, Brian Finch, etc. The thing to remember is that, with no exception that I can think of, these fast guys are EAGER to help you make your car better. The better your car performs, the more you will enjoy driving it. And by performance, I am not limiting the definition to just suspension. There are lots of inexpensive ways to radically improve the performance of your car. Seats, pedal placement, brake adjustments, tires, fuel delivery...all these things have a great influence on the enjoyment of your car. The people who routinely run these Goodguys and Optima events have gone through this process and are quite willing to guide others with their experience. Practice is the single most important ingredient to making your car perform better.
The best thing about participating in these events is that you get to hang out with a group of intelligent like minded people who live to achieve things in their lives. You won't find a lazy, mean, or dumb bone in their bodies.

Mine simply isn't safe to flog yet.
I've done track days in previous cars and know what can happen if you don't have all your ducks in a row. Very much hope to re-learn driving with a big car next summer.

if you ask me .. i believe its about what pro "touring" really means.. touring. like driving the car. i respect the die hard autocross guys but i would rather enjoy my 327 with updated suspension just ripping through the mountains, valleys, coasts, and just checking out everywhere and anywhere i can. taking trips with it and not being afraid to drive it. rain or shine. i believe its about driving.
that being said .. autocross is definitely in the future for me. i just doubt they would let me on the track with a bench seat and lap belts lol

I am building mine to do anything. I really like the idea of the Cruising the Smokies type events. The USCA events would be fun to go to as a spectator, but that would be a bit much for me at this point. I am not into the competition side of things, more the fun side.

I wish I drove mine more. I have ran a couple local autocrosses and the Goodguys CO Nationals event. I look forward to the USCA event in CO this summer and a chance to run a road course with some great teachers and pro's to bug for advise. I built my car to run the canyons outside of town, but as I have aged I no longer feel the need to break the law, and put my self and others in danger, so sanctioned events it is. I consistently encourage other gear heads to get out no matter the car set up or experience to try autocross, as it is extremely fun to just get out and turn around the course whether you're are a contender or not.

Do you need a 4 or 5 point harness? .. And other rules or regulations that you must for your car?

No harness required...actually there are very few requirements. Everything must be strapped down securely, tires in good shape, brakes in good shape and you must be ready to have fun.

Bench seat and lap belts will work fine. You would be surprised to see what people drive and have for seats. When I first started in the Thunderbird I had a flat bucket seat and three point belt that let me slide all over the place...I never felt unsafe but I sure slid around...especially as my driving skills improved along with my times.

Well said Bret! I would include you in with those "fast guys"!!
There are certainly a few guys get very "focused" on race day but I have seen even those guys climb underneath a competitors car to help him/her make the next round. It is always impressive to me just how much all of you guys know and how much you are willing to share. We also do ride-alongs for any of you who are interested...this is a great way to see what it is all about and pick up some driving tips along the way!

Cruisin the Smokies was a fantastic event...I agree, these are incredibly fun and something for everyone. I will tell you that USCA now offers a single day registration if you just want to run the Autocross and Brake stop challenge. I personally love all car events but the ones that involve any type of driving the cars are my favorites!

Right now, mine is getting a few necessary upgrades to run in autox type events. It will debut at something this fall if things go as planned. It will very likely turn slow times but put on a great sound and smoke show. Until then I play pit crew and lead builder for my wife's 88 GTA that runs all over the country having just completed USCA Vegas followed by a trek cross country to run and play in Pigeon Forge at Cruisin the Smokies as part of the BFG Share the Ride initiative. We'll make it to another USCA event and Holley LSFest in addition to some of the SoCal Hotchkis autox events and at least one more GoodGuys All American Sunday.
So, yes, we drive them as much as possible although both vehicles have been long retired from true daily driver status. That job goes to some other less noticeable and identifiable vehicles.

Yep, it bit me hard!! With regards to Goodguys events...actually there are a few events each years that are open to any year Americanmade cars and most Sunday's are open to all American made cars. I run SCCA events like you do and the difference is the spectators that attend the Goodguys...it adds a whole other level of excitement to the event...I have read a lot of your posts all the way back to when you first started talking to Ron Sutton...you have taken the time to understand your car very well and as a result you are running rather well....I hope we get to run together sometime!! Maybe a USCA event?

I had the pleasure of watching your wife run in the Crusin the smokies...she did great!! She really wheels that car around. Hopefully we will be to grow that event as it was a ton of fun...this year we had scheduled a derby party for Saturday so I really only got to participate in the AutoX but the cars and people were awesome!

If your a little nervous, come out to an event and ride along. But I would suggest riding in a slower car with a mid level driver. Hopping in the 48 hr vette with Chris is exciting (really) but it just may make you more apprehensive. My wife Tina has been talking about it for two years or more. She rides with me at every event, and her car has been driving around for a year or more, shaking it down before we paint it. Finally I got her to go out to a two day SCCA event at Smokies stadium about two months ago. - She really doesn't want to drive the car much without paint and full interior. But she had a blast. Then, she got to take it to Raleigh to the GoodGuys event (thanks Keith) And ran it there. The Monday after Raleigh I was talking with a painter about getting the car in and she tells me, "you can't send it to him next week" - "I'm taking it to Nashville and then there's an EVO driving school the next weekend at Smokies Stadium that I'm signed up for. He'll have to wait 'till there's a brake in the season". - "Oh, how about some better tires on my car?" Yeah, her goals for the car are changing, and now she drives to work two or three days a week just to be more comfortable in it. She's not the fastest, or the slowest, but if you saw her come off track at the Cruisin the Smokies Auto-X, she had the biggest smile. She even gave a few rides. She still wants it painted and a really nice interior, but now she's focused on the drive quality too. So, take your car out, finished or not, and have some fun. We'll all help you out. I'd be glad to show you which cones to watch for, lord knows I've hit em all.

I'm working to get my wife involved too. There's a company around here that rents Miatas for HPDE use that she's been talking about. My biggest issue getting her into it is that the kids (19 and 21) are still on the payroll, and still require a lot of time. :(
My ultimate goal is to get her skill set to a point where we can attempt a One Lap. But that might just be a dream...

Iv'e got a little work to get done yet but I should be making my Goodguys auto X debut in DesMoines this year. Iv'e just got a couple details to iron out....Yes it does make me nervous for a bunch of different reasons. That said I drive mine a lot during the summer which is probably more dangerous than a closed course.

My car is daily driven. I think it gives me a pretty good advantage on the autocross course, actually, since it's the only car I'm used to and I have lots and lots of seat time in it.
I'll be heading to Nashville in a VW this year. Can't wait, the thing is a street legal go-cart. It's also half the width of the American cars so that's a nice autocross advantage!

Now I'm really getting the itch! Hmmm... Most guys drive to events or trailer? Any events you recommend in New England? I am going to do some research.
Trailering vs driving for me is a question of where the event is and what I will be sleeping in. If the event is close enough to home where I do not need to spend the night I always drive. If I am going to spend the night I usually bring the Motorhome to sleep in so in that case the car gets trailered. I have seen very few cars actually break on the Autocross to the point where they could not be driven back home and those cars belonged to guys who are driving in the pro division and are ready to repair at the track. If there is a failure you will often receive as much help as you want getting it fixed.
There is a Goodguys event in Springfield, MA. And numerous SCCA events in you area...look up your local SCCA chapter and search under Solo...which is the SCCA brand name for autocross

I want to drive...the kid is off the payroll and I am ready to play. I've build a ton of cars for other people who want to sit behind them at a show. That was cool then, but now, I want to drive...
I volunteered at the Daytona USCA event last year. It was my first racing event. I had an ear to ear grin the whole time!! I built a car to participate in this year's event but they aren't coming to Daytona in 2015.:(
I have three first gens and I have an ear to ear grin each time I drive them around town. I am embracing the aftermarket, but slowly...kinda paycheck to paycheck purchases. I am sorta at the stage of RobNoLimit's wife...huge grin and learning. I'm selling one or two so I can build what I really want, now that I think I know what I want.
I want to drive in autocross events, Powertours and other events within few hours of home. I have a nice trailer but I want to build a reliable car that I can drive. Hopefully if we participate more there will be more events.

I have done 2 auto crosses this season. I just built my car over the winter so they are the first I have done. I enjoy doing them and testing myself and my cars ability. The event I just did last weekend was over 100 miles from my house so I spent a lot of time driving, although it was mostly on the road! I will do some more auto cross events over the summer and definitely be doing some track days at my local road course. Just like taking my Jeep on the trails, it's fun to put my vehicle to the test that I built.

I have followed a similar path... I got my 78 TA Y88 special Edition about 7 years ago and was super happy to take it out for cruises and I hit the car show scene pretty hard the first two years and then got bored seeing the same cars over and over and started wondering if there was more fun to have with the car. I hit the drag strips a few times and thought that was a blast. I started looking for events that used the cars instead of driving somewhere and parking the car. Then I watched a GG's autocross and was fascinated and determined to go to the next GG's autocross. I did and met some people there and now am slowly in the process of changing a perfectly original car into something that can turn corners and go fast through the straights...
I have met a lot of great people by doing this and a lot of them are willing to share what they have learned.

NCM is awesome. The facilities are still young but the track is fantastic. Driving into the Sinkhole seems like driving off a cliff.
If you get there early, and if not already taken, grab a spot under the tent canopy. It's the only shade around unless you go off to the fringes of the parking area.
I'll also parrot Bret's response. Most all of the folks in our little world a great to talk to and more than willing to help. Just be respectful and note what is going on. If track time is upon us, it's usually not the time to discuss your troubles with installing a widget.
I go to shows, but after an hour or so I gotta go. This is much more fun.

Thanks for the heads up Carl. This will be our first attempt at RV camping onsite at a track day event so I'm looking for every bit of advice I can get in regards to track layout, paddock and camping areas and whatever else to prepare for. Hopefully some of the other regular RVers or others that have been to that facility can pop in with any tips or tricks they have as well. We are okay with no hookups...but would prefer to park around the camp area that everyone else will be camped in as well and not have to mess around with moving the RV once it's in and set up for the weekend.
I understand from my WRL friends that the pit wall is pretty tall which makes viewing the cars on track from the pit area difficult. Other than that' I've heard it is a fantastic venue and I can't wait.

Best way to get going is in a crappy car. That can only make you better as a driver. Plus, if you are unsure about the crappy car would you trust yourself in the nice one as a novice? The car is only part of the equation, the driver is the biggest part. If you can compete in a crappy car you can compete in anything.
I race a mini-truck and I am slow but I know that what I have learned from driving such a beast is that I will be fast in a fast car. I liken it to a batter swinging a bat with weights on it when he's on deck, the same is for driving a crappy car. You will be better and very fast with the practice even if the practice ride is quirky and slightly less than ideal.
Tipping cones is addicting as hell and I love it. So glad I got out there and I'm on my third season in the truck and I am starting to notice I drive faster each time.

I never have autocross or tracked neither one of my cars! Its crazy, but i just not have found the time! I am always ripping and running when I get home from my season so I just never have. Now it interest me! But I think I will wait till i finish my career to start playing in the field!
But I can't wait to take my 68 camaro and 93 overpowered supra to auto cross. But till then I shall cruise!

Yep, viewing can be tough. The best place is near the end of the straight along a trail that parallels the track. It's a 20 second walk from the parking lot. If viewing the event + having a bit of outside shade + RV is in the cards, I'd look hard at this location. As you enter the parking lot it will be on your LH side between the track and where construction for the fuel pumps are.
Watch out for Deception. My co-driver was looking at the rumble strips out the RH window. The problem was they were supposed to be on the left! Entrance to Sinkhole all the way to the straight is a test of patience. Lots of time can be lost, but not a lot of time gained. When coming up the hill out of Sinkhole, wait.......wait......wait.....and wait some more.

I just changed the pencil to pen for the USCA event at NCM. My schedule aligned and we'll be making the trip to Bowling Green in three short weeks.
Are you coming there Keith?
I will be there! Can't wait to meet Barney in person.

I am not sure if there is any real RV camping there at all. I was there a month ago and there were no hookups. I know they have been working on that so maybe they are ready for this event. I stayed at a KOA about five miles away. That is a very nice campground.
NCM itself is a very nice venue....the skidpad is basically perfect. We ran in the rain and our times barely suffered....this is going to be great fun.

Your Question:
"There are literally thousands of you posting and chatting on pro-touring, lateral-g etc and thousands of cars at events like the Goodguys but only a handful that actually hit the autocross....my question is why?"
Why?
After having raced "Wheel to Wheel" in many Vintage Races at many different tracks across the country there is absolutely NO thrill at all in waiting in line ALL DAY to make 3 to 6 one minute laps if your are lucky around a tight autocross course in a parking lot. Not much more thrill in open track event either where the slowest car determines the track speed for everyone else since passing is strictly limited.
Speaking for myself it's not about the value of the car that your are racing it's all about the On Track Time. In the case of autocross especially the time and money spent for the actual "On Track" time is a horrible investment in both time and money. It really is not much more expensive to go wheel to wheel Vintage Racing as there are many classes and types of cars to race and have just as much fun as the Big Boys with the Big Money. It does take more time and money on the front end that is needed to acquire a Vintage Motorsport Council recognized Competition License. Once you have that you are pretty much ready to Vintage Race anywhere and drive anything with the exception of a GTP car or open wheel car. Type of car to race? If it's a vintage car there is class in which to race.
And let's not forget the parties, the people and the camaraderie. After all that's what it's all about since it is a safe bet none of us is going to make a living doing it!

Great to hear guys getting out and driving them. We are very lucky here in San Diego to average 10-15 CAM-T cars per SCCA event. We bring a BBQ and hang out before and after our run group. A great way to spend a Sunday!

I would say you make some good points here. I will tell you that at the USCA events I attend i get so many runs that by the end of the weekend I am exhausted. I am also ok with limited passing although in the advanced division you have more opportunity to pass. I am just not excited to take a car that I have worked hard to make beautiful and that I enjoy driving on the street as much as the track...going wheel to wheel just does not appeal to me anymore. Hats off to you for doing that.
I do believe that as the Goodguys has gained popularity and attendance it is also going to growing pains. They are at the point now where something needs to change but it is hard to do. I went to cruisin the smokies a few weeks back. Those types of events and the format and venue that the autocross is held is awesome. During the autocross we got 20 runs or so which with trying to tune the car between, talking with fellow drivers, giving rides to those who don't have one etc...it was a very full day...add to that a car show, multiple cruises to destinations, many social gatherings....what a great weekend in a beautiful place.
I am very happy with what I am doing now. Driving my cars, putting many miles on them. Pushing them to the breaking point, fixing them and doing it again. The people I have met and talked to...just like you..are wonderful. Lots of opinions, lots of discussion but we all get it...it's all about the fun. Like you said...we are not making a living at this but it is sure giving us a life worth living...and enjoying every minute!

This will be the first time my wife and our two small dogs have gone to a race weekend with me. We are trying now to decide if we should dry camp at the track or stay at the KOA down the road. I'm leaning toward dry camping at the track just to have everything close by and not worry about ferrying back and forth as the RV and Barney will be our only transportation options. We should have enough capacity with the RV systems to make it 2-3 days I think... Plus, for the off hours camaraderie...

I just reserved an RV site with NCM with electrical hookups. It's where the yellow star is on the map below.
Just to let anyone else know if they are considering camping onsite.

Just go do it!! I started in a 1959 Ford with a stock suspension and manual steering, plus crappy tires to boot! I had an absolute ball!! Now I run at Goodguys and SCCA in CAM class and still having a ball. The car gets faster from seat time easier than from upgrades. I never worry about being "competitive", shoot, I have the only autocrossing 59 Ford in the world, so that makes me the fastest. Just do it, you'll be surprised at how well you run and how much fun it is.

In 2013 I took the wagon out on the autocross at the Colorado GG. I think you can still see where the tires rolled over. I had a blast. Last year I took the Focus on the autocross course also had a blast. Will I do it again YES. It was fun watching a mildly modified 2014 Focus ST( not mine) whip up on the high $$$, high HP cars ( 5th gen camaros, etc) taking FTD.
All my cars are driving. Don't care if it is 10 miles to work or 1000 miles to a show. I drive them.

I took a driving lesson awhile back and the instructor let me borrow his rental Jetta on the last day because mine had clutch issues...he told me to air the tires up to like 65 lbs and run it through the autocross...it actually did quite well. So, if you are ever stuck with a bone stock car and want to run the autocross...you might consider giving that a try. I was surprised I didn't hear a loud pop at some point!! Have fun...drive hard
I know these aren't pro touring but... You have to love the level these guys are driving thier cars, saw them this morning while at coffee,,they were on their way to a car show, I like the attitude.Drive em, you only live once.

I would love to find a vintage little trailer to haul behind my wagon. Bets paying for a hotel all the time.

These particular trailers are " Boler" Trailers, they were made in Canada in the 70's, there are still some kickin around and still really popular. At 150 dollars and up a night for a hotel ,they do have a place .

If you don't drive the car then what's the point of having it? I can't understand trailer queen vehicles. Autocross is one of the best ways I can think of to safely enjoy a car. You're typically not going too fast, cones don't really hurt if you hit them, and you can learn a lot. I wouldn't recommend starting as a novice running at a nationwide professional event, but I'm sure you can find SCCA or other sanctioned events nearby that are less intimidating. Get out and drive whatever you have, I've seen guys in SUVs and mini trucks at autocross, they had fun, what else really matters?
