This got out of hand quickly!
111857

This is my buddies latest project. (I should be updating my build thread on my LS1 T56 Vega)

He bought a 66 Ford F100 longbed (a derailed project). October 2014
Plan was simple:

Keep the patina.
Cut the bed from longbed to shortbed, grind the welds and let them rust.
Buy a crown vic, and install the front crossmember and drivetrain into the pickup.....using the F100 frame

We started with shortening the bed, then Ron cut the frame to match. After the bed was done, Ron replaced the floors in the cab.
Then it was time for the donor car. Found a clean 2004 Crown Vic for Cheap (ex K9 unit) with 144K.
We put the car up on the lift checked out how clean the car was along with the Watt’s link rear end and that’s when things got out of hand.A little investigating showed that the Shortbed F100 and Crown Vic had nearly the same wheelbase.Off by only 0.30 inches.

Here's how it looked when it arrived:

After the bumper came off, Ron had to move the radiator back 2 inches, otherwise the AC condenser would be in front of the grill. Luckily Ford left a little extra room between the engine and the radiator.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/04/20150220_202200_zpsrqevivc5-1.jpg (http://s1003.photobucket.com/user/Dannys1956/media/RKAG/20150220_202200_zpsrqevivc5.jpg.html)

Started connecting at the rockers. Centered everything up. Set the floor of the crown vic at zero and set the rocker of the F100 at zero.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/04/20150302_185829_zpsid6dqq8b-1.jpg (http://s1003.photobucket.com/user/Dannys1956/media/RKAG/20150302_185829_zpsid6dqq8b.jpg.html)

You can see the bare steel panel welded in that connecting the top of the truck cowl to the crown vic firewall.

Connected the floor of the crown vic to the back of the cab. Made some filler panels, put some ribs in them to stiffen them up, welded them in, seam sealed and POR 15.

Thats a new way to do it! Ive heard of putting the CV front suspension on a stock f150 frame, but this takes it up a notch! What are you doing for gauges? Ive often thought a uni-body with CV front suspension, Windsor, and 4r70w would make for a cool functional truck.

We needed to see how it looked together so we put the hood on and rolled it back where we could get a look at it. The cab is securely on, but the fenders are not supported in the front. The bed is mostly secure, but most everything will come back off.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/04/20150308_115700_zpspvgqhghv-1.jpg (http://s1003.photobucket.com/user/Dannys1956/media/RKAG/20150308_115700_zpspvgqhghv.jpg.html)

The A/C condenser is pretty much the limiting factor for where the f100 lands on the vic. Even with the radiator condenser moved back 2 inches, its right up next to the grill as shown below.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/04/20150308_123212_zpscaczfzkd-1.jpg (http://s1003.photobucket.com/user/Dannys1956/media/RKAG/20150308_123212_zpscaczfzkd.jpg.html)

Took the bed off and did some mods to get additional tire clearance: A little lip rolling and widened the front of the bed 1 inch, which actually improved the way the front of the bed lined up with the cab.

With your talent you could do like some of the older cars and create rear wheel covers that can be removed to change a tire if needed. Or I guess add hydraulics that will lift the bed <shrug> Bet you could do something pretty clean.

I am Subbing because I am about to take on this same project, picking up a 64 for $600 and thought about what to do and then came across several chevy trucks on caprice chassis'. i figured worst thing i could do is ruin a $600 investment.

i may have missed it but how did the width match up?

It just made more sense to use the crown vic floor the floor was rubber mounted to the frame already. where would you section? at the toeboards? seems like a nightmare.

Ron is more of work, work, work type of guy and rarely slows down to take pics. I take pics , but I miss allot of the intricacies because I'm working on my Vega project across the shop.
here's another shot of the bed, when you could still see the section of the crown vic trunk (with gas tank below).

The footwell area of the crown vic was about 4 inches narrower on the crown vic than it was on the f100. So 2 inch filler strips were made on each side.

Needed to extend the dash to cover up wiring and A/C and stuff. Also built a little box to cover the column mounts. Why is the sheetmetal white?? Ron recycled the sheet metal from the doors of the crown vic. (he wanted to canopen the doors anyway to swipe the power window actuators for install into the F100)

yup recycling the headlight switch..........and the heater controls.....and.....
Speaking of that he modified the stock 66 tail lights to accept the new style tail light plugs (no pics of that). a little brighter and less likely to have a ground problem.
Trying to reuse as much of the vic as possible

The stock F100 dash was apart when he got it, so no "before " pics. Somewhere along the line; a previous owner thought red and blue interior would look cool. so the cluster surround was painted blue with red accent.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/20150503_092937_zpsmd2k2yuz-1.jpg (http://s1003.photobucket.com/user/Dannys1956/media/RKAG/20150503_092937_zpsmd2k2yuz.jpg.html)

Ron wanted to reuse the cluster, so he welded up a new cluster surround. Its bigger, to cover up more of the cluster area (where the light, wiper, choke actuators were.
Then he wrapped it I the simulated carbon fiber (just to be different). I had some lightly tinted lexan hanging around from a boat project; so he attached the cluster and blacked out the unneeded part. With or without the flash camera still doesn't catch it right; it looks way better in person.

This is just a mock up, before completion.

Yes the cluster is off center in the panel, but its centered over the steering wheel. The stock (blue) one was offset also.

Wow, what a kickass project!!!
I did that to a 6 cyl. 68 Camaro and a z28 4th gen Camaro. My wife drives it now and loves it. I'm looking at a 67 Camaro and a 5th gen Camaro build next.
KEEP THE BUILD PIX COMING!!! Yeah!

Made some progress this weekend. We reinstalled the cloudy glass with new seals. It pained me not to straighten & polish the trim but then it wouldn't match the rest of the outside of the truck.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/20150516_093645_zps9nxysywv-1.jpg (http://s1003.photobucket.com/user/Dannys1956/media/RKAG/20150516_093645_zps9nxysywv.jpg.html)

Started final assembly of the dash
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/20150516_141833_zpsq652ukao-1.jpg (http://s1003.photobucket.com/user/Dannys1956/media/RKAG/20150516_141833_zpsq652ukao.jpg.html)

Ron mixed Hot Rod Flat Black with some white until he got a shade that matched the steering wheel and all the plastic trim. I wasn't crazy about the idea beforehand. DANG was I wrong. It looks so good in person.
See the light switch, its from the crown vic; "frenched" into the dash.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/20150516_093636_zpsnuzzzyzw-1.jpg (http://s1003.photobucket.com/user/Dannys1956/media/RKAG/20150516_093636_zpsnuzzzyzw.jpg.html)

Also reused the heater controls from the crown vic, and sunk em into the dash, where the radio should be.

Naturally we reused the dome light from the crown vic.

Ron has thing for exhaust exiting the side of the bed on pick-up trucks.

I think that plastic molding trimming the hole might...... will have a heat issue after 100 miles.

Due to the time crunch, he left the cats, and deleted the mufflers. probably change that to "no cats with good mufflers" after power tour

The dash extension will line up with the color break of the door.

Its crazy how the bodyline in the door is less than an inch above the new floor line.(compare the two pics)
(the new black carpet is just laying on the floor)

Love the progress. One thing. I'd keep that cats, they are good for the environment, and will make you smell less like your truck. I run cats on my 427 LSX in my '71 GMC. They are the crazy Vibrant GESIs, but they don't hurt power either (good for 1000 hp without power loss). On a mild motor a couple of regular hi-perf cats will do wonders. Modern cats have come along way.

You should look at farmtruckracingTX on facebook and instagram. They have done this swap and one of the guys on there drives a flat white ford like this everyday.

They have an earlier bed on that truck and that's why the lines miss the mark.

I drove this bad boy tonight! I've never driven such a quiet truck!!! no rattles and it rides and handles beautiful!

I am way overdue to post up the remaining pics.
Ron finished it and has around 2000 miles on it.

Since my Vega isn't done and Gingerman frowns on my Convertible; I entered the F100 into the Motor State Challenge. Driving the road course would have been better if I filled the gas tank first!
I wasn't breaking any records on the autocross course , so I decided to go for the large amounts of smoke instead on my last run. I stayed on the course and didn't hit any cones!

This is an awesome build! This thread was the motivation and detail I needed to get started on my 66 with an 08 CVPI. I still have a very long way to go, but I have made a little progress now. Thanks Guys!

Ok when i first saw this i thought "wow thats the hard way" ! After seeing the results i am impressed, it came out GREAT! Most just lift the cv body off completely and mod the floor step for the wider frame rail and set the cab on.
Great work guys!

Cool Build!

I did something similar on my '66 F100 but used the F150 ecoboost drivetrain, firewall & Floor. A ton of work for sure!

I spotted your truck on HotRod blip so did a search for it and found this thread.

I also went with a new F150 126" WB frame to start off with.

Hope I'm not hijacking this thread but I love this truck.

I'm near the end of a CV swap on a truck frame.

My next one will be a full swap like this!

Love the idea. I have been toying with the notion of swapping my 1972 F100 longbed onto a 2002 Ford F150 frame a buddy has at his shop.

I'm doing the same project as your friend did here, I'm looking to know if you can tell me where you mounted the cab, height wise.. like can you give me two points and tell me the distance.. like door hinge to floor? It will save me a lot of time, thanks so much.. also if you had any more photos, I would love to see them. Thanks for sharing this work!

Did you shorten the bed to oem short box specs?
How many inches did you take out of the box, both front and rear cuts?
