We are looking at installing late model seats however my first impression is that the seat pans would have to come out as they add too much to the height of the seats. I am thinking of removing them and then using some fender washers underneath the tracks. Will seat pan removal compromise structural integrity or iare they there only to provide a mounting surface for stock seats? Would it be possible to drill out only the welds on the seatpans without going into the floor or is it better/quicker to grind the welds with an angle grinder?

I installed Recaro seats to my '69 and didn't have to remove the floor pans.. in fact I have never heard of anyone removing them.. I would also imagine that they do add some measure of structural rigidity.

I would go with modifying the seat brackets to get the seats as low as possible.. should be easier/better than ditching the seat pans.
