I have a question; something I have always wondered:

Why is it that there is as big a need for after-market parts as there always seems to be? I mean, why don't manufacturers put higher performance parts in their cars to begin with? Wouldn't it be cheaper for the consumer if they could buy them in bulk and just put them in most of the cars. Hmmmmm.....I KNOW what I want to say here, I just don't know how to put it into words. It is like the cars that Kris designs. The public would go NUTS for these, but instead the manufacturers....(OH! Sam Ryan!.....sorry....watching Monday Night Football....)...create bland cars that we NEED the aftermarket parts for. I am sure this is something that has been debated many times, I just have never seen a good explination for it.

If they aren't going to do anything about it, hows about selling cars with no extras, 4 doughnut wheels and bland engines that are built to run really strong after add-ons. Let us put what we want on them and build them up...kind of like Scion does.

i think the auto industry has a stake in the aftermarket industry..that way they make double the money kinda like the states getting tax money on used cars ..it was paid once when car was new..its double taxation..we need another boston tea party..lol

i would presume that car makers woud probably make the cars they do based on the fact that the vast majority of car owners today will probably never even wash their car.

why bother selling more expensive and less profitable versions of a car when you can get away with selling a cheaper version of the same vehicle?

Its about selling a car to the masses. pure and simple. it has proven costly to provide cars to a niche many times over. the proweler. The SSR. There are many cars on that list. The mustang? designed as a cheap secretary car first, and then modded to be "cool" after. The camaro? they designed the Z28 and then worked backward from there, so noone wanted a cheap one.

Yeah, the "dumb masses" (say that fast) for the most part don't care what they drive. They go to a dealership and say "I want a tan/gold/brown car. I don't want to stand out, I just want a warranty."

Scion is built by Toyota so quality should be pretty decent. Teh couple Scion's I've driven were very solid.

It's true about the masses though. It's less of a risk to build a dull mundane car that nobody really loves or hates than it is to build a stand out niche car that some with love and some will hate. Taking into consideration that pretty much anybody on the buying market will ask somebody elses opinion on the car, building a niche vehicle can be a gamble. If you like a car but none of your friends do would that sway your decision slightly?

Yeah... and why don't they make the WHOLE airplane out of the material used to make the black box if that's the only thing to ever survive a crash?
:hmm:

The masses are bitching about the price of vehicles today, let alone adding more cost. Plus, the aftermarket does not have to worry about agencies like the EPA (ie BANKS). BANKS sells a great product with some great benefits, however, they don't have to worry about CAFE or EPA standards like the Auto Industry (GM, Ford, etc.), that is what makes the aftermarket, the aftermarket.

Yeah I kinda wish you could still get an actual factory muscle car. Like say if they made the GTO with an ls2,6,7_ and stripped the rest of the car down no power windows, doors, mirrors, seats, ac, traction control, ABS, and all the other crap they put in cars now-a-days. Heater and Radio delete option would be cool too. And put some steel rally wheels on there while there at it.

But that will never happen so there goes that Idea.

Don't forget that manufacturers have to build something that will go for 100,000 miles with minimal maintenance. Think how many people don't even change their oil regularly.
