This is what we are starting with. There is not a lot of rust but since Ford did not prime a lot of the inner structure we will be removing all the sheetmetal do any needed rust repair and epoxy priming. The plans are to install Rod & Custom front and rear suspension, Wilwood brakes, Currie 9", AOD and a 347. The body mods will be fender flares, drip rails removed, cowl vents filled in and maybe a few other things as we go.

One of the first things we did after bracing the body was to remove the cowl

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/04/DSCN0668_zps5qfpl1ed-1.jpg

The quarter panels were removed

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/04/DSCN0678_zpsfmirr3go-1.jpg

The roof was also removed and there was only surface rust but in a few years it will get worse if it is not cleaned up now

If the unprimed inner structure made it 50 years, what will happen in the next few? Was the roof rotted so you were removing it anyways? Serious questions.

We did not see any rust but we did find rust as you will see once we start the repair.

I'm sure a lot of you are wondering why do we remove all the sheetmetal. The quarters were replaced at one time and we did not trust the workmanship and once they were removed we found rust in the outer wheelhouse. The roof was removed because Mustangs are known to rust in the inner structure in the front by the top of the A pillar. In this case we were lucky and only had surface rust but over time would became holes. The other area on coupes is the sail panel inner structure and we did find rust. A little rust on the left side but the right side had a few small rust holes starting.

We had a major set back. Brian lined up the doors but when he went to line up the fenders and hood he found a major problem. A former employee welded the front end on wrong even though he measured and remeasured before welding. There was very little gap on the left door and a large gap on the right side so the front end had to be cut off. After working on this about two weeks at my expense Brian is satisfied with how it lines up and we should be able to start charging the customer again early next week.

I never have liked the way Ford just stuck the taillights on the outside of the taillight panel and the owner agreed. He wanted to install 67 taillights but the taillight panel is to small so we are recessing the taillights. He ordered a set of billet bezels from Eddie Motorsports.

The first step was to get the taillights to fit the new taillight panel and trace around it.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/09/DSCN1792_zpsweazmssz-1.jpg

Brian decided to make a new inner bracket out of thicker metal.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/09/DSCN1798_zpslur1mubr-1.jpg

This was his first attempt but it was a little to small so he had to make another one out of an old seat riser.

Test fitting the taillight

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/09/DSCN1801_zpsu98ruxje-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/09/DSCN1804_zpsh0nu2wdc-1.jpg

The flares are to small on the early Mustangs so Brian is going to make a little larger flare.

The first thing is to mark where he is going to make his cut and start cutting.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/DSCN1911_zps3b3bu9nq-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/DSCN1914_zpshf2sye8c-1.jpg

He left it attached at the bottom and brought it out 1 1/4" at the top.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/DSCN1915_zps5w3eq7hh-1.jpg

Next he made a pattern out of poster board and taped it on.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/DSCN1919_zpsw3nlztms-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/DSCN1918_zpsywu4801d-1.jpg

Next he transferred the pattern to metal and had to make it in sections to get the shape he wanted and started tacking in place

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/DSCN1932_zps84bzvwms-1.jpg

He will keep added sections until it is all filled in

The rear will be stock width. We are going with Rod & Custom coilover rear suspension. We need to get it installed and we can measure for the offset.

Can't wait to see those pics. I run that suspension on the Mach1, still getting it dialed in. Love it so far.

I never was really interested in putting flares on my car, but I've been changing over the last couple of months. I must say, those look exactly the way I'd do them if I do them. Can't wait to see them painted up on the finished car. How wide do you think you can go on the front?

I have the second Rod & Custom rear suspension kit sold on my 1968 Coupe and it fit great. We can get the car real low if we want. The kit has been redesigned and it is a little harder to install and you cannot get it as low as my car.

The upper shock mount now has heim joints because I'm sure not all early Mustangs have the same distance between the frame rails. Tack welded in place

I have been busy working in the shop and I need to update

I block sanded the fiberglass hood

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/06/DSCN3037_zps2hopvzoa-1.jpg

Sprayed one coat of SPI black epoxy

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/06/DSCN3040_zpszablfzht-1.jpg

Two Coats of SPI Turbo primer

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/06/DSCN3041_zpslbhhpfqy-1.jpg

Block sanded again

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/06/DSCN3043_zpschpfdwxz-1.jpg

Two coats of SPI epoxy

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/06/DSCN3045_zpsubblyais-1.jpg

The fiberglass bumper did not fit our car. The center section did not line up with the lower valance and the bumper was to narrow.
I cut the center out of the bumper and had to modify the holes in the taillight panel to get the bumper lowered.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/06/DSCN3129_zpsuautgg5z-1.jpg

I used Duraglass to attach the brackets to the bumper. Later I added a couple layers of fiberglass to hold them in place

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/06/DSCN3131_zps0jucjpuo-1.jpg

This shows you have much I need to add to the left side

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/06/DSCN3137_zpsqy6nruny-1.jpg

I added fiberglass to the top to hold it in place

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/06/DSCN3139_zpsrlus7lux-1.jpg

I clamped it to a long piece of angle and added fiberglass on the back side.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/06/DSCN3140_zpsapduqxn0-1.jpg

I removed the braces and clamps and finished adding fiberglass to both sides and this is how it looks now. I still have to work on the gaps.

After sanding we found a couple of small imperfections I wasn't happy with so I fixed them and epoxy primed again. It will be ready for paint after a little wet sanding with 600.

That looks great. What's the story on the red, white and blue fastback?

I raced it in SS/GA back in the 70's and set the NHRA record in 1971 and 1974. Won class at Pomona in 1972. Quit racing it after the 1974 season. Restored it close to the way it was raced in the 70's in 2005. At this time the engine is out being rebuilt to race in Stock.

Hey Rusty,

I always enjoy following you builds. I've learned a ton from watching you and Brian work.

Can you help me understand your spray up order? Is there a benefit to spraying clear over the initial base, then stripes, then more clear? I've been working towards paint with a boss style hood/fender stripe and in my head base, stripe, then bury in clear made sense.

Thanks! Keep up the good work!

When you remove the tape there is residue that needs to be cleaned but the big thing is Brian wants everything perfect and that requires a lot of measuring and pencil marks that need to be scuffed before you can clear. If you don't care that the stripes aren't 2" wide and have a 2" gap everywhere you might be able to get by without the clear over the base.

It’s about time to refill the sail panel joint and I was wondering if you guys re lead them or just use filler?
Filler has come a long way since 1967 and obviously easier to use.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/11/4774_zpsxqw5pdue-1.jpg

We still could not get the hydraulic clutch master cylinder to clear but found one from Modern Drive line that clears. Talked to Hydratech and they said have never had a problem but there was no way it would clear on our car. Looked at a couple of other 65 - 66 Mustangs in the shop and found that the aftermarket firewall on our project was not the same as the original one and that was our problem.

I like the red plug wires. It's always nice to have a pop of color in the engine bay. If you make everything just shades of black, white, gray, and shiny, it becomes monotone and a little boring.

Hi Rusty. Love the work you do.
Hoping you could give me a little advice .
Have replace the quarters on my 67 Coupe and am wondering what to fill the seam with. Do you lead wipe them again as per the original style or use a filler material. If so what’s the best material to use.
Also does Brian fully weld the qtr seam or jus plug it.

Brian welds a patch over the seam. We use Duraglass first followed with 3m Platinum.

Fully welds only does a small weld at a time and cools with the air hose.
