I have been pondering this one as well for the developement chassis. My requirements are for a typical 'can' muffler is that it has a 3.5" inlet/offset and a 3.0 or 3.5" outlet/center or offset. Or.... an oval or round type, similar to a Borla (oval and round) or Burns (round) or even a Dynomax (round).

I have read about these choices in stainless:

Borla
Burns
Dynomax
Edelebrock
Flowmaster
Spintech

So far, for a 'can type'..... I would go Spintech (http://www.spintechmufflers.com/spintech/flyers/muffler%20specific/Sportsman%20Street%20Flyer%20scan.jpg) "sportsman street" or a Dynomax (http://www.dynomax.com/ultrafloweld.stm) "ultra-flo" aka. "race magnum."

For the round type, you cant beat Burns (http://www.burnsstainless.com/UltraliteMuffler/ultralitemuffler.html) 'ultra light.'

For the oval type, you cant beat Borla (http://www.borla.com/products/product_multi_detail.aspx?cat=5&type=72&desc=XR-1%26reg%3b+Racing+Exhaust|XR-1%26reg%3b+Sportsman+Racing+Mufflers) XR-1, either the sportsman or multi core.

I guess it comes down to sound quality and noise. Borla has links to sound clips as well as Spintech, Dynomax, Flowmaster and others..... but you cant really tell unless its right infront of you. I think the best cound clip collection is LS1 Sounds (http://www.ls1sounds.com/) . They have all kinds of headers, diameters, x-pipes, mufflers, cut outs and more........

I narrowed it down to the Spintech 'sportsmans street' or oval 'eliminators' for a can type....... or the Burns 'ultra light' for a round type.

Hi Again,

have you checked out magnaflow mufflers, they should be 100% stainless steel.

Magnaflow makes both a stainless and mild steel muffler.

I'm a big fan of the Borla products. I've used them on a few cars in the past. My Chevy II has a set, and if you're looking for something fairly quiet they're a good choice.

If performance is a big deal to you don't go with the Spintech or Flowmaster mufflers. They're among the worst flowing mufflers on the market.

I didnt go with magnaflow because they didnt have a muffler that would fit where I wanted it to.
But borla had so yeasterday I bought four Borla xr-1's I guess it wont be to noisy then.

Hi Al,

I looked a bit at your site before buying but didnt see the custom lenght offer, anyhow its to late now because the Borla's are on their way to Europe right now.
I did buy a stainless weldup kit for my chevelle from you but Its still in the shop and I havent started working on it just yet.

Al,
So if somone (me) wanted an LSX to be as quiet as possible w/o hurting power what sort of system would you put together?

I have a magnaflow system on my C5. Not much louder than stock, but better flowing and a pleasant tone.

I will be using magnaflow 3" mufflers behind my 540 in the 69 Camaro.
