View Full Version : is there a way to differentiate an ss without the cowl tag?

I own a 1967 camaro, vin tells me its a v8, i lost the cowl tag years ago, i really think my mom put it in the trash i never took a picture of it. imy question is is there extra brackets or a way to know if my car is an ss? i bought it like a real ss shell no engine or tranny. has a 10 bolt center console, bucket seats, no shifter in the steering column and no weird hole cut in the floor tunnel. Thats the dilema i have any coments will be apreciated. thanks

camaros.org is the best info for that, but if the 10 bolt is original it is not an SS

You need the cowl tag, build sheet (they were under the car between the gas tank and floor pan), dealer invoice or Protecto-Plate to verify the car as a "real" SS. The good news is that even without the cowl tag, you can build it as an SS, Z28, RS/SS, ProTour, Gmachine, etc. These days unless you have the matching #'s drivetrain & rear-end, the cowl tagged sports options are not going to hurt you too much on market value if the car is a good build. I have a "real" '67 396 SS and I cut it all up to ProTour it with an LSA since it came without engine and 12 bolt. Don't tell MacNeish.

An SS would come with a 12 bolt rear axle, and if built after early 1967 it would have a "Radius Rod" on the right hand side. http://www.camaros.org/radiusrod.shtml The housing would have a bracket for it sticking down on the right and there is a bolt on bracket inside of the right frame rail in the area of the emergency brake cable. I think two holes go up through the floor under the back seat and one into the frame rail. Early cars didn't get it. There were many complaints of wheel hop due to the mono leaf springs twisting under power.

An SS would come with a Muncie four speed which had the speedometer cable on the right hand side. The speedometer cable should be coming through the firewall aimed right and just under the windshield wiper motor. Auto trans and Saginaw four speed Camaros have the speedo cable exit the firewall low and left next to the emergency brake cable. The Saginaw was the trans for the lower power V8's and 6 cyl cars.

Thanks guys , i dont think is the original rear end , i have to look down there when i go back home see if i could identify what your describing.Also like you said , its not numbers matching its going to be what I built out of it, so far is going good taking a lot of time though , but its my therapy and besides I'm never gonna sell it might get an original one one day , i found this one in mexicali , just south of the border found pretty rough, the owner had it in a ranch semi buried, he had a 400 engine fuel injected wich did fit so he beat the crap out of the firewall to make space cut a hole and put the trucks ac in it i got it with no engine or tranny 1,000$ cross the border with it got it register and start the mission of bring in it back to life , thanks
