The owner of this car bought it last year and drove it maybe 100 miles and decided he wanted more HP. A shop across from mine built a 347 and changed the rear to a Currie 9" and changed the wheels to Torque Thrusts. This car looked great when he bought it.

While the engine was out he decided he wanted us to install a Rod & Custom front suspension. We were removing seam sealer from the cowl and found that the lower cowl had been patched and never welded and also found this rust.

He wanted us to install a steel bulkhead behind the rear seat and this is what we found

At first we were going to patch the cowl and he was going to drive it a couple of years before we repaired the cowl and repainted the car.

We also found the front floor pans had been patched and the tack welds were bad. The owner decided to have us fix it right. This is what we found under that beautiful paint and a lot of bondo.

They had cut out a section and had a couple of pieces of plastic stuck in there with fiberglass mat over it.

This is what they were covering

If you are buying a car that was just painted make sure you see a lot of photos showing how it was repaired before it was painted. This was done by a shop that thank goodness is no longer in business.

Typical of a lot of places out there. There are a lot of good shops, unfortunately, there are even more bad ones.

I purchase a 1968 Mustang GT Fastback a long time ago, and when we went to look at it the yguy was bondoing it up. Said he was gonna fill it in, paint it Red and Sell it. I bought it as is and when my body guy finished the Body work correctly, it was about 4 inches longer...

I'm the owner of the car - lesson learned. The only good news is there are honest guys like Rusty out there to make things right. Thank God for Gillis Performance Restoration.

Welcome to ebay? You're not the only owner of a surprise I know of.

Wow! Rusty will fix it right though.

My neighbor just bought a 55 Chevy from a online consignment company out of Houston Texas. Paid $33K for a Late 80's paint job, cracks in the body work all over. But it is shiny and has nice wheels. The Bottom of the car is all rusty and gas tank leaks. Feel for him in a way. I told him the next time either go look at the car or hire someone to go appraise it.

Hey, look at the bright side, from the pic's at least the floor pan looked reasonable. Of course I wonder how the floor pan survived yet the exterior didn't. . .buried in a snow bank, or parked next to a beach?

Some things like a certain amount of cheese hole looking rusted areas if done the best they can be with the right fiberglass filler may last longer than many here may ever imagine. Many shop's customers can't afford to pay what proper rust repair would cost.

But that being said, areas like the roof being cut open & filled with what you'd just call bondo;;;; daaaaam

With an eye for doing bodywork, I see older cars all the time at shows with metallic paint still smelling like its gasing off & you can see shadows through the paint in rust prone areas. Ewww.

That's just crazy what was under the pillars...

That's insane and not save at all to drive in.. I know a lot of people who have imported cars like that from America that looked like a "million dollar" car but only was a project car under the surface.. It's unbelivable what people can get away with.. :)

So Rusty, are you going to fix that or rebody? Seems with that extensive of repairs necessary, if you sent it to media, you'd probably only get the rotisserie back. Just wondering at with point the repairs would financially make a body swap effective?

Sad to say it is much more common than not nowadays. The 69 Cutlass Convertible I just traded for was in the process of a "slicked up restoration" until the body guy the previous owner used up and vanished. I ended up with it at least 20-30 lbs heavier due to the many layers of bondo.

I'm glad nobody knows about those rust free cars in Calif -- -- The prices for them are already stupid

That's NASTY, not much metal left atall when you start digging. That's why I never paint my cars, I'm afraid to open them up . . .

I don't get some people. Do they go home at night satisfied that they did a good job concealing the nastiness? How can someone not have any remorse? That's horrible.

These are the last photos I will post on this thread. I will start a new one once the parts come in to start the restoration.

The upper and lower cowl came off as one piece only had two small welds close to the windshield pillar on both sides

I said I wasn't going to add to this thread but I wanted to show what was left of his original Mustang that we could use.

He found a donor body and we will be removing the sheetmetal and epoxy priming everything and fitting new sheetmetal. Today starts the build of his Mustang.
