Has anyone modified a GM musclecar hood hinge to use a hydraulic cylinder instead if a spring? Similar to the aftermarket ones out there now a days?

I was looking into doing something like that, Id like to know too. I might try seeing if I can build my own hinges out of some aluminum, I can't afford to buy them haha

Old style hinges are 4-bar linkages to swing the rear edge of the hood out and away from the car. You can't lift from the same pivot points because changing the arm length would change the arc of the linkage during hood opening.

That looks like you are doing this on a G-Body? What parts are you using?

Tim.

I know it's been done on the old style hinges before. I've seen pics of it

I'm looking to see if anyone has retrofitted stock hinges with the cylinders. I know there are plenty of aftermarket aluminum ones out there but I prefer to use the ones I have.

I didn't disagree. It just can't be done per the original picture.

I've seen people do the trunk by mounting the bottom of the cylinders to the floor of the trunk. This allowed the cylinders to work in an almost vertical position. I was wondering if you could make a bracket/mount on the frame or fender well to perform the same purpose. I'm several months from getting my fenders back on the car to test out the possibilities of this. But thought I'd throw out this thought in case someone wanted to try it out.

I looked at that as well since I just broke and replaced a hood hinge.

Decided it might be easier to just do everything but the hood mount bracket out of billet since I have all the other linkage members to copy. $700 a pair seems pretty steep for hinges.
