Hi, I've got a 67 Firebird which is lightened for 1/4 mile and road racing. It weighs 2950lbs and has a 400ci up front.
I'm currently running up front original hubs and spindles with unknown 11" rotors and an older generation wilwood Superlite 4p caliper. The rotors are warped and calipers are tired.
wheels are Bart steel wheels 15" with 5" backspace and 1" spacer.
As the racing I do is fairly short distance, brakes don't get hot but I need them to work well from cold. I don't do any circuit racing. Vehicle is driven on the street to events.
im getting a bit confused as to what would be the best set up for my application. I've been looking at Baer and wilwood. I want to keep with my 15" wheels so that will limit my options I guess.
Anyone got suggestions for an optimum set up for my application?
thanks

Wilwood sells a kit designed just for 15" wheels. I can't remember what it's called off the top of my head.
Off topic question but what have you done to get your bird so light?

The vehicle has a fibreglass front end, hood, fenders incorporated into one mould and is flip forward, two pins and i get access to all the engine bay, inner wings have been removed, doors have been lightened all the guts taken out and only skin left with aluminum panel on the inside, perspex door windows, all interior removed apart from dash, rear bulkhead removed and replaced with aluminum, no carpets, boot lid is fibreglass. full roll cage inside. fuel tank removed and replaced with aluminum fuel cell. speed tech suspension up front with ridetech coilovers double adjustable. i'm still running an all iron 400ci Ponti motor but when funds permit will put some ally heads on, which will save a few more lbs.
Im sticking with the mild horsepower, lighten it as much as i can philosophy. It is really an out and out race car but is road legal.
I just need to sort the brakes now but i'm not sure which direction to go..

You can run the wilwood brakes as you will be limited with a 15" wheel
I personally would get elaborate and run NASCAR brakes, but that requires a bit of modification, fabrication and money

I don't really understand what you mean when you say that you use your car for "road racing" but that you don't do any "circuit racing". Are you saying that you do street racing, i.e. drag racing on the street? Stock D52-type front discs would be your lowest cost option, you could run the Wilwood D52 aluminum calipers to shed some weight. Anything that's higher performance is typically going to add rotor weight and/or require a 17" or larger wheel. We have some C3 Corvette kits for the vintage race guys, and you could run the Wilwood D8-4 or D8-6 caliper to shed some weight, but the rotors are not particularly light and the capacity may be more than you're looking for.
Otherwise Wilwood has some drag specific kits that are hella-light, but not the best suited for street use. Their Dynalite or Dynapro kits might be your best compromise between weight and actual brake performance.
