View Full Version : Centering rotor trouble.

Hello all. I am mocking up a cpp c5/c4 hybrid brake kit. The car is a 1971 chevelle with drum spindles and hubs. The kit bolts up as it should but, the rotor will not center in reference to the caliper. It is about an 1/8" off. I have called cpp and was told that this is a bolt on kit, and to look at other parts. This is the case for both the driver and passenger side. I have tried with the supplied bearings as well as the originals that came off. Is an 1/8" ok? Has anyone gone through the same issue? Anyone have a good place to start? Ive been staring at it and taking it apart for 2 days now. Thank you in advance. I also att. A pic.

I don't have any solutions for your problem, but there are a couple things you can do to make it easier to deal with CPP.

I suggest taking a few good photos that aren't as zoomed in. If someone wants to see something more closely, they can digitally zoom. Showing more context in the photo can offer some hints as to whats going on with the application. Zoomed in photos can demonstrate the "what" of the problem, but not usually the "why." A quick bullet point summary can make things more clear as well.

For instance
- CPP kit XXXXXX or part number XXXXX
- Year, make, model of car
- Relevant details - drum spindle car - stock steering knuckle (spindle)? aftermarket?
- Problem - axial spacing between rotor and caliper abutment bridge

Once you've done this, send them an email. It's easier for the general sales/tech guys to pass along an email to an engineer than a phone call.

:Shrug: Are you worried about the caliper being centered or the caliper bracket? Floating caliper so I wouldn't concern myself with that unless it is bottomed out on the slides.

79-TA thanks for the tips. Dontlift, the slides are not bottoming out. It seems the hub face are different thickness. When I assembled the passenger side, the rotor is centered. I was under the impression it was both sides, as i was interchanging parts during the test fit.

you might need to use washers or file down the spindle mounts to allow the caliper to fit centered between the caliper.

I was thinking about taking dowm the mounting bosses on the caliper itself. .

I am having issues with the fixed wilwood calipers not being centered on the rear rotors. Especially the passenger side, the caliper was not centered, and could not put any shims as they would move the caliper more towards the center of the car instead of outboard to make it centered on the rotor.

I was advised to go with floating kit from wilwood hoping to resolve the issue. I installed the new kit. Yet, the issue still not resolved. The passenger side rotor is fully attached to the outboard pad making it difficult to rotate. It looks as if the offset is more on the passenger side than the driver side.

I have read that with ford 9" rear end, the axle lengths are uneven. I assume driver side axle was installed on the passenger side.
Now I have to take the axles apart and swap the locations hoping to resolve the problem.
It is really frustrating, I spent almost $800 on new rear brake kit with no luck.

Mine was not that far out as to stop the hub from spinning. I ended up shaving down the mounting bosses on the calipers themselves.
