Griggs Racing provided the rack. Running their front spindles which are a work of art (and priced accordingly). Have a mkIII mr2 electric power steering pump which is speed sensitive and combines an ECU, motor and reservoir in a single unit to help at low speed given the size of the front tyres.

What suspension are you running for the front and rear?
Pretty much the top level Griggs Racing stuff
Front - Griggs Racing SLA, aluminium drop spindles, adjustable tubular sway bar
Rear - Griggs Racing watts link, aluminium LCA's and torque arm
Shocks are aluminium double adjustable coil-overs (compression and rebound)
Cambered diff
The unibody is totally redundant given the tubular frame/cage that was built - can post some pics showing mounting etc if you like
love how natural the widebody looks! Its gonna be a fun car!!!
Thanks very much. The original plan was to build some big flared wheel arches but am glad it is now a true wide-body. Even mustang people don't really pick it but rather stand their scratching their heads wondering how the rubber fits.

Hello! Jan from Norway here. This mustang from Australia is bæææææd:) I registered here just to comment. I have watched fastbacks for many years, and this is one of the coolest. When I get the money I am gonna build a widebody fastback like yours but with rtr-x fenders outside of the already widened car and Eleanor kit. And maybe chopping the roof incrementally one inch. I am checking the progress every week now. When you have the time it would be great to see a HD video clip of the car. Keep it up:)
Godbolt
10-03-2015, 04:18 PM
Thanks Jan. Really appreciate your post. Will hopefully get to the track before the end of the year. Plan on sticking a proper race car driver in to give some useful feedback. There will be video. The data logger I'm running also links up with a Go-Pro so you get telemetry on the video if you want it (gear, revs, speed, g's, track position etc). When it's done I will look at putting a full build thread together showing the construction of the cage and widebody work. Just hard getting it done!

Thanks! The nose is from cobra automotive. Mine has been heavily modified though in order to accomodate for the fact that each side of the car has been widened 40mm (1.575 inches each side) so it had to be cut and widened and then lowered/ reshaped at the front as well given big the sill drop on the car. Fortunately the original piece was high quality and very strong.

They make one for 65-66's as well.

As for the front suspension, basically the best stuff I could get from Griggs Racing.
And thanks Geoff B, unfortunately no real progress over the last few months but that ought to change soon. Will update when there is.

Thanks Jim
Noosa is a great part of the world.
As for registration in Queensland, it is a nightmare. Tried the ICV route but no real joy (yet). I'm not giving up but it seems I will be able to run a very limited rego that would allow me to drive to/from events and within 15km of home if I'm "testing"a new part/item. It's madness. In order to race and run properly you have to have a proper cage to FIA spec's. BUT according to the geniuses at Queensland Transport as soon as you have cage structure in front of the b pillar you can't register it for road use regardless of how well constructed it is and how safe your car is. Pure bureaucratic b/s.
Anyway, I might need to join a lobby group and start agitating. Failing that, I will have a cheap fuse that keeps failing requiring regular "tests"!
Finally have some progress to report. Good and bad.
The good - Dry sump tank recess in boot and brackets done. Swirl pot for fuel. Running 2 pumps - 1 in tank, other from swirl pot and additional filter. Clutch and brake reservoir in position. Ready to run lines.
The bad- #'n Griggs Racing - someone did a hatchet job putting camber in the diff. Really shoddy. Axles don't fit properly. You can force them in but the result is awful. Would inevitably lead to huge strain/forces, the robbing of horsepower and a broken gear assembly/axle. Will need to be done properly.
Some pic's to follow-

Good explanation, It's something I know I'll have to look into in the future also, for now I think I'll plan to keep my camaro in the states until (if ever) things get a little easier in queensland.
I'll keep an eye on your progress. It would be too much of a shame to see a beast like this never allowed on the streets.

Excellent work !
I hate to be that guy but I have done almost the exact same thing - '67 widened 2" per side. It really looks good on these cars and like you said people don't know why it looks so good. I've had a guy doing a concours restore of a '65 who couldn't pin down what was different. I wish it wasn't so damn much work.
Would love to see some photos of the metal work in progress. Are the tailcaps built from scratch or a modified fiberglass piece ? I ended up building my hood from scratch, how about yours ? I would say the hood was by far the most ambitious part of this, widening the doors and quarters was fairly straightforward as was the tail panel. I just pushed the fenders outboard and then worked the windshield corners, not too bad. Might of been easier to widen the fenders and use a standard hood but I don't think it would look as good.
Car looks awesome and will be fun...if they let you drive it.
Godbolt
12-05-2015, 01:31 AM
Thanks Preton! Great minds eh......
Tail caps, boot and bumper are from Ring Brothers. Have another steel boot that might end up with a wing mounted to it but that is down the track (and will be for the track only). The hood is modified but for the front the extra width was built into the fenders. The front cowl has been extended forward. A lot of time went into the rear quarters and rear valance - they are all metal. The shape at the rear I think blends nicely with the fuel cell with each side gently curving up toward the centre before levelling out. The front was made to mirror the appearance as much as possible. Running a splitter underneath the front and will likely build a removable splitter system (again for track only) that will extend much further forward but, like the rear wing idea, will wait for some proper feedback from the track.
When it's done I will do a thread dedicated to the fab work, particularly the widening process and, if people are interested, the cage. In the meantime Preston, post some pictures of your car! Would love to see it.
Thanks
James

And don't worry, this will be driven. Hard.
Godbolt
12-05-2015, 02:26 AM
Preston, you can probably see from this that the top portion of the front cowl is extended. Also the side sill is extended 80mm (3.15 inches) with it curving around so that it goes just under the cage structure. In order to make it blend with the front and rear sections they were lowered and shaped. Hard to capture in individual pictures but you probably get the idea.

Thanks very much. This has definitely been a case of scope creep. Originally the plan was for something more street based but as time went by it became more and more race focused. I lack the skills to do this type of work but was lucky enough to find the right people - particularly Tony Porter who used to build race cars for a Australian v8 supercar team and Russell Weaver who did the body. They are very talented and know a bunch of others who have helped out. The plan is regular track days and road rally events. It will see some time on the street but really that will be pretty limited and in any event, it's not built for comfort.
Ultimately I would like to do this event, particularly the leg in Tasmania.

Thanks very much. This has definitely been a case of scope creep. Originally the plan was for something more street based but as time went by it became more and more race focused. I lack the skills to do this type of work but was lucky enough to find the right people - particularly Tony Porter who used to build race cars for a Australian v8 supercar team. He is very talented and knows a bunch of others who have helped out. The plan is regular track days and road rally events. It will see some time on the street but really that will be pretty limited and in any event, it's not built for comfort.
Ultimately I would like to do this event, particularly the leg in Tasmania.
http://targa.com.au/tc/
I lived in Tasmania for the most part of 2014, the roads are absolutely amazing and so secluded, you could drive the twistys through the mountains and not see another car for an hour, Targa is even better because they close off the best roads down there.
It's an awesome event and your car would certainly get some attention

The under side almost looks to good to hide. I've been down to watch a couple of the targa tassie races and as mentioned above the roads are incredible. I'd love to participate one day as well.

G'day, love the build mate, it's looking really nice!
I gotta ask about the rearend though, is that a Dana you're going to run or maybe even a Borg Warner?
And why the change from the more traditional 9 inch rearend?
Cheers!

The teal coloured piece you see above the throttle body is an extension to the intake on the supercharger. It is a 3D printed plastic piece to check the fit. Without it the hood just touched the throttle body and this piece kicks it down slightly and allows it to clear. The final piece can now be machined.

Yep. It's at Ross Stone Racing. Tony Porter who did the fab work was a long time with SBR and Ross and Mark Bastin (sparky, also ex-Stone Brothers) are helping out. Good to have these contacts. They sourced an alternator from the guy who bring thems in from the US for the Aussie v8 supercar teams. They are from NASCAR where I'm told they will use them for one race and then replace! Ross and Mark are rebuilding Russell Ingall's championship winning car at the moment.

This might be a dumb question but is this going to be a race car only? Or will it be street legal?
Are there pro touring events here in Australia, like they have autocross in America?
Godbolt
05-16-2016, 02:58 PM
Not exactly street legal..... Looks like I will be able to get a limited rego as a road rally car. That would allow me to drive to and from events and within 15km of home provided I am "testing" a part and requires a log book to back that up. I'm ok with that as it is not exactly built for comfort as much as I would love to give it a blast up Mt Glorious each weekend early in the morning.......
There are various road race style events, the most notable being the Targa's which is the long term plan, but I am looking at regular track days so I can learn how to use it properly.

Any more pics or details of the wiring harness weight loss program? I need some motivation on mine (coyote) also, I know the build changed direction (as mine did) but have you considered a more race inspired steering column to match the theme?
Godbolt
08-11-2016, 01:38 PM
The wiring harness is custom made. Running a series of mil connectors at the major points such as the firewall and switch panel. Can happily send you some pictures of the process. I agree the steering column looks a bit out of place and down the track I might look into other options. The pure race columns don't have the switchgear for indicators and the like so would it would then require making something, perhaps that would attach to the steering wheel itself, such as some push buttons for that but the main priority now is to finish.
As for motivation, some amazing work being done with the coyote engine by this guy-

I'm new to this pro tour site .. Still learning. Posted my first reply to you on my original post instead of here. Anyway ...
I can see this is a very well thought out mustang project. It represents a great deal of engineering that is implemented really well. I like the look. Well Done! I will be using some of your cage ideas. Next week we will be bolting in the front/rear torque box connecting rectangular sections onto my '66. Biggest present challenges .. Making my entire cage "bolt-in" so it can be removed, powder coated to match my stock interior reinstalled, and still be able to use the fold down rear seat, so no bars through this area.

After re reading your entire post again ... I'm wondering if you could have part of your cage "removeable enough" that it could pass by the licensing people, and still pass FIA? As I mentioned, the cage in my 66 fastback is being built with boltable sections to be fully removeable in front of the hoop i.e. Side hoops and the bars across the windshield. My torque box connections are under the rug .. Invisible.

Not sure. The advice I got here was it was better to weld them. Will follow your progress with interest.
In the meantime, some more pics...waiting to fire and tune this is killing me but the guy who is going to do it is having his time eaten up by v8supercar teams at the moment and they have deeper pockets than I do.

Here are some pics of my bolt-in roll cage. You can see how sections are connected or temporarily left off (if passing road registration is an issue) The cage is still a work in progress. It will be powder coated and the final bolts will be ARP stainless. You can see how the rear angle brace leaves the Shelby window totally unobstructed. It is slightly angled to allow use of the GT350R plexiglass racing rear window. The part of the cage following the window contour is positioned high and will be parchment white. From the side of the car the cage is virtually invisible.

Ok, so ran the car hard on a mainline roller dyno to identify what bugs there might be. Initially oil pressure was a major concern but got that sorted. Everything went well but we identified the following:
1. Will be getting a much bigger heat exchanger for the supercharger and fitting it in front of the existing radiator. The intake temps were simply too high once you had run it hard for a while and once up they would not come back down. Annoying but have to admit this was not unexpected. I was always concerned that the one we were running was too small.
2. serious belt slip on the supercharger - we were only making a max of 0.4 bar of boost when we should be pushing around 1.2bar. Fortunately not a big fix as we just need to run a slightly shorter belt.
The clutch is unhappy and will be pulled and I suspect replaced. Once these issues are fixed we will be back to the dyno and will be heading to a hub dyno next time. We were not far off getting wheel spin on the dyno we were using and with proper boost it will be generating a lot more power. It was good to finally hear it run properly and fortunately it all held together.

Thanks guys.
Glad to finally get it to this point and to have no really major problems. The guy who you can see tuning it is a totally unassuming fellow. It is only once you get to know him a bit that you find out he spent 13 years with Ilmor. Started with them in the early 90's and won an Indy 500 with them in 92', before going to their F1 program. He was then based in Northamptonshire and answered directly to Mario Illien and Paul Morgan. They were building engines for a heap of F1 teams, including McLaren and won a couple of world championships during his time. Ilmor bought their own jet which was used to ferry engines around along with the Ilmor guys. He got out after Paul Morgan died when he crashed his Hawker Sea Fury and Mercedes bought a greater stake in the company leading to more control from the Germans. Interesting guy.
Check out the page for his business where he has a video of a 5L coyote cranking out serious power at 8200 rpm - http://www.innov8raceengines.com.au/
