Dear,

I have a question.
How can you tell if a '72 Chevelle SS is a matching numbers car? I don't seem to find a code on the engine.

I'ts a 350 SS Chevelle, what is odd. But with some internet digging I found that '72 was the first year that the Z15 option (SS) was available to 350 engines as well. Everything looks legit, emblems, dash, so on.

VIN number of the car is 1D37J2L536223

Should be a machined pad on the block just in front of the passenger cylinder head...

Do you mean on the side of the firewall or the side of the grill ?

On the front side of the engine (to the grill), on the side of the passenger, there is a code: V1101CDG I guess.

So V: made in flint
1101: first week of november
CDG: 1972 350

So it seems to be a matching numbers

Now that is just for the motor....don't forget there are codes on the tranny and rear end too, rear end is on one of the axle tubes in believe my chevelle was passenger side tube a few inches from the cast center section on the back side of the axle. I don't have a damn clue where to look for the tranny codes

Don't forget the VIN stamp. Should be a partial VIN by the oil filter also. That's the minimum, engine code with build dates matching up closely along with the VIN stamp. From there you need a POP, window sticker, broadcast sheet to make it rock solid.

Never heard of one on the oil filter location. Unfortunately gm well chevy...the vin doesn't tell much the cowl tags will tell you v8 or not but won't tell you if it's numbers matching. The build sheet on a bodies can be under the carpet...headliner..gas tank...rear set..trunk they kinda got tossed where ever.
