This is a 36 Plymouth Roadster that our custom has brought us from another shop. He decided it was not going in the direction he wanted so now we have the opportunity to make it what he wants. It will be running a IFS, 4 LINK rear with a 9in 4 wheel disk brakes and a 6.1 Hemi. The previous shop had cut the fire wall and moved it back 5" to get the engine to fit. So that has left us with little room inside under the dash for stuff. So one of the things were going to do is use a lot of push button stuff even the shifter will be the new Performance Automatic's Push Button Shifter! The Custom also wants to keep it a little on the old school on the outside but everything else you don't see up to date. So here is what we were given.

Well as much as I hate to tell its a Fatman front end that the previous shop installed. Not that I don't like there product but the last two times we have had to deal with them there customer service has sucked. So I'll leave it at that.

After we got the frame cleaned up with finished some of the welding and boxing on the 4 link the other shop left undone. We then started working on the two separate belly pans to hide all the stuff going under this car.

We were able to come up with a small support frame for the middle of the body so we could get it on the rotisserie. I needed access to the inner and outer rockers and didn't want the body to bend in the middle. As you can see the sides of the body are in pretty bad order.

Instead of making a new thread on this 36 Plymouth, Ill just start from here and update all the pictures and info. We have been working back and forth on this 36 Plymouth for a good custom of ours. We have finally got all the rust repaired and the previous bad body work that was hidden under the old paint.

This rear wheel tubs were pretty rusted out so we made new ones. A new trunk Pan, lower quarters and rocker were also made here in the shop.

The front fenders were riveted together from the factory to make them one unit but we decided to tig the join so they would be one and now seam sealer needed. Don't want that wax in the crack.....

Nice fab work! I enjoy checking out your builds.

Thanks Motown, we have been so busy its been hard to get on here and do updates.

We have been modifying the stock hood center pivot point to work like a 32 ford. The 36 plymouths didn't work well from the factory and we wanted to have it were the hood sides could stay open at the same time. Before one side laid on the other so that wasn't going to for for us. We made and new air shield for the front grill to direct the air flow up into the radiator.

We made the rods to hold the grill out of aluminum and we will also mill a grove in them to hide led lights to light up the engine bay.

We also redid the exhaust tips from what the other shop had. They had them coming out of the back like a truck so we moved them up and tucked them. Also Fab some close out panels to clean up the look from the bottom and help protect the driver side gas line from rocks.

Frame is coming together pretty good. The front is Fatman IFS and the rear is a TCI rear 4 link with sway bar. I have also upgraded all the bolts to ARP stainless.

Because I will have belly pans I need to get the E-brake cables up out of the way. So I milled some aluminum rings to go on the 4 link bars to hold the cables in line and keep them up off the paint.

Before we set the body on the frame we did all the body work on the firewall and painted it. I really wanted the body mounted for the last blocking so everything would come out nice and straight.

This is just a mock up wheel but I think a 17 front and 18 rear in the Artillery style is what the customer is wanting. Still not a 100% on that yet.

I assume that is a "paintable" undercoat with base/clear or single stage sprayed on top of it?

This is the SEM Rock it Tintable type, you have to make sure that the color is put in without the binders in the color. No Clear coating needed. I used about 65 psi to get the texture you see. I did put a white sealer down to make sure it would cover like the paint I used on the body. A dark sealer takes to much to cover. This is the 4th car I have done without any problems.

Thanks guys! I can't wait to get this thing on the road.

I made a set of custom grill supports out of 1/2 aluminum and since the customer had to have lights under the hood I milled a 1/4 out from the bottom to flush mount some LED Lights.

Never did put that last pictures up of the 36 we finished back in aug 2019. It took a mopar pick at the 50th Louisville Ky nationals and a Elite 5 at the Fall Rod Run. This was the 4th Interior I have tired and the First Custom convertible top. I hope for 2020 the custom gets this thing out and drives the wheels off it! I put a link at the bottom with a build video on youtube if you want to see more of the build.

Really really nice build. Ticks lots of boxes.

I'm sure there's a story, but "RAW Rods" brings to mind a much less finished style (rat rod, tbh). Working at this level may be better represented by... say, a full name (if those are initials).

Not personally a fan of the gaudy colour- first thing I'd do is paint it a period colour, but I am sure that was a customer thing, customer is always... the customer.

When I first made this post it was R.A.W. Rods witch was my dealership, but I also have my restoration shop witch is: Watkins Restorations. R.A.W. is my initials...

Yes the color was picked by the custom and being a mopar he wanted a loud color. In the end I love the color but like anything love it or hate it!

The headlights are: HEISE 60 watt LED with the Black face. Very nice lights and very bright.

Thanks! We made just a few mods to the outside but yes the custom wanted to keep a lot of the original style. I wanted to go bigger on the wheel but he won out...lol

ah yeah, older guys with money nodding and seriously saying, "It's a Watkins car" ... has the right ring to it! Just sounds right being spoken by the higher end guys who have cashed out and are having fun with their money.

I'll have to check out the lights, have to admit I hadn't heard of them, glad I asked.
