Hi everyone!
i have been posting on a Swedish forum but the muscle car scene is so much smaller so I thought I should post a thread here as well to get the benefit of your experience!:)
i have had the Camaro for about 4 years and though its nice and sound it lacks the customized details to make it mine.
About the car:
engine. 383 stroker, Brodix heads, Erson cam, dellorto drla 48 carbs, and more (I haven't built it myself so I have to look up more details)
3" x-pipe exhaust
wheels. OZ Mito 18" with 245 front and 295 rrear
it also supposedly have one hell of a sound system.
what I'm going to do:
change wheels to something more "classic racing". Looking at aero wheels 15" with meaty tires. Good year billboards would be great but seems to be hard (impossible?) to come by street legal ones, so now I think bf Goodrich street radials.
will have to get new disc brakes that fit into the wheels. Right now there are big corvette c6 brakes. Great for stopping but not the look I'm after.
im going to re-paint it. Dark metallic grey with black nose stripe and flat clear over it all. Badges, rear bumper and other Crome parts high gloss black.
perhaps shaving the drip rails.
interior: thinking of using black alcantara with big stitching, mould the gauge dashes in matte carbon fiber along with other "mouldable" plastic parts. Will be milling and lathing a lot of small details, knobs etc. perhaps also making a custom steering wheel.

This project will take some time since I'm right now making the engine bay the way I want it and I also have a job, wife, kid, dog that demands my attention.
Here is a link to the Swedish forum if you want to see more pics and practice understanding Swedish...

Here she is with the new hood
109041
The engine died on me last time I drove. The distributor rotor had come loose and the cap was done, so I bought a new one. Didn't start. Thought I'd clean the spark plugs and seven came out fine, one didn't... Aluminum threads gone.. :( so while having the engine apart and helicoiling the threads I put some paint on it just so it wouldn't be just repairing but a little renewing. The engine bay will be white, black and red details.
109042
The studs that hold the pulleys in place on top and new ones I made under
109043
Anodized
109044
The original fender braces are not much fun so a couple of hours later..
109045
109046
109047
One of four carbs cleaned
109048
Making new fuel fittings
109049
Black anodized and fitted
109050
This is where I'm at now! The original air filter just sucked air through a corse hole. Not even rounded edges... Just doesn't seem optimal. So I made new plastic spacers with oversized holes. Black is new, white is old
109051
Then made a prototype mini velocity stack. Seems to work.
109052
The real ones I make have a greater radius and will eventually be milled and drilled to go over the carb-studs.
Crude
109054
After some file and sandpaper work in the mill
109053
Now I have made 3/8 and it takes time.. Almost a shame to put air filter over them... Well it feels good at least not to take the easy route.
Thanks for stopping by and I will post as progress is made.

Your Camaro looks good! I'm guessing your a machinist. Your parts look awesome. If your in the market for letting me have those fender braces, I'm for it! lol. Those are nice! I have been to Sweden, in 2000 I was in Gothenburg for about a week and a half. Loved it there.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the nice comments! Glad if I inspire machining work. :)
I'm not a machinist, I work with salesmanagement so it's nice to actually create something with your "hands" rather than just working with numbers and talking to people. Sort of meditative.
I hope to get a bigger lathe and mill this summer after tiling the garage floor, the one I have now have its limitations in size which means smaller parts and smaller cuts... Sometimes more frustration than meditation hahah.

Thanks guys!
The OZ:s are nice but I'm going to sell them and get either slotmags (black powdercoated) or aero Wheels, 15". =)
Yes I'm pretty happy with how the fenderbraces came out. I Think i will have the same carbonfibertube with aluminum design on the doorstraps(?) on the inside of the door. I Think you know what I mean.
A mill and lathe is such a freedom. I use it all the time and it doesn´t have to be a big machine. Mine is about as small as they get (wich was good when I didn´t have a garage). It has its limitations ofcource but you can get alot of things done.
Its also easyer to justify a bigger and more expensive lathe/mill when you know you use it alot.
This summer i will tile the garagefloor (when i can take all things outside and dont have to be to afraid of rain) and after that invest in some bigger Machines.
This is the one I currently have:

When i find myself out of things to do ill start manufacturing carbon fender braces full time!
In the meanwhile I finally got all of my velocity stacks done. To be honest they were a real pita. About 2,5 hours each..
Anyway the result looks good and hopefully makes some sort of difference from before.

I now have cleaned the airfilters, connected the hoses from transmission to radiator, sucessfully remover the drainplugs in the block and drained the coolant.
Will flush the coolinsystem and then refill with red or blue coolant. Which one is better?
I am also considering switching the steeringbox to one with more feel... Need to read up on it a little more first.
Lastly i have started to mill the new brake mc lid. Will probobly go for a ribbed design like the valvecovers.

haha... "over here"? I almost regret signing up on this forum seeing all the "no compromise" builds around. Makes you want to start from scratch with new subframe, fourlink, custom axle, tranny, Engine.... but thanks! =)
I will have to make some spare braces and post them in the buying and Selling section. ;)
The tubes are 25mm in diameter with 1,25mm wallthickness. Bought them here in sweden but I bet you can find any size you want, for less $ on ebay.
Small update on the lid. More sanding ahead to make it more organic and smooth. Will se if I buff it upp or anodize it.. If I could get my red dye to work it might be nice!

I had to rethink the lid because the original design built to much and would interfere with the hood.

I had a guy Contact me wanting to buy my Wheels and brakes. To remove the rear brakes you need to remove the axles. When doing so I found that the diff has somehow rubbed agains the pinion. The diff also sits loose with 2 mm play in any direction.
The way I see it I have two options. Either repair the existing gm10 8,2 rear end, spending Money on it. OR buying a gm10 8,5 and spending Money on it instead, getting a tougher axle. Option 2 seems better.
While Im at it why not keep spending Money and get it the way I really want it?
Im thinking: Truetrac diff, nice diff cover, ridetech 4 bar, coilovers, dse minitubbs, meaty tires!
Any tips, opinions? Am I thinking straight?

Ok so it’s been a while.. 4 years! Got my second daughter and just didn’t have the time to keep it up. And if you are a parent you know how the first year is. That is no excuse to let my poor car sit and wait three additional years!
Anyhow, motivation is on top and I have started the project up again.
In my last post I wrote about the crappy axle, have gotten the things to make a stronger one.
Gm 8,5
Truetrack diff
Moser 31 splines (I think)
Also got a shipment of Wilwood brakes,
Ride tech four link with coil overs and dse mini tubs.
After tearing out a super nice stereo system, seats, carpet, springs, shocks etc I have now started cutting out to fit the tubs!
When the tubs are done I will sand down/rough up the old interior paint and use a good protective 2k primer to make sure it stays solid.
After the four link is in place I will be able to measure wheel spacing to determine rims and tires.
I am also considering guldstrand mod or tubular arms, another steering box with faster ratio.
After all mechanical stuff is done I really look forward to paint and interior. Right now I am thinking blue-greyish with some sort of black stripes and blacked out chrome.
Interior I am actually thinking of sewing leather seats myself, alcantara details, carbon fiber moulding and lots of lathed aluminum parts.
I’ll keep you posted and probably also ask for your advice! Be safe!

Pretty slow progress since I had knee surgery this fall. Crawling around in the car wasn’t an option unfortunately.
I have finished one tub and started cutting out the other. A little fiddly and dirty being showered in sparks but it’s getting there. Really looking forward to the “clean mods” after epoxy priming the interior.

Both tubs are welded in place and the braces are also fitted. Looks a bit messy but with a little grinding and a 2k primer it will look good.
I also made small brackets for the gas springs that will aid in smoothing the action of the trunk lid!

This evening I welded in the brackets and test- fitted the gas springs. Works great! They hold the trunk lid open with no effort but later I will test them together with the torsion springs to see what feels best.
I filmed the the action but it doesn’t seem like you can ad clips via the app so pics will have to do!:/

Last two evenings have been spent grinding off the old paint and some minor cases of surface-rust.
Not to bad fortunately but it feels good getting stuff done to aid longevity.
Not much to photograph but sanding/grinding really gets the garage filthy!

Last night I tried fitting the cradle for the four link an I’m having a hard time getting it to seat properly. Did som hammering on the frame rails and it slowly gets better but not there yet.
I even tried hydraulic jacks to press it in place but not getting it to seat properly.
Guess I’m up for more “massaging” underneath (sounds better than it is)
Any one else who has had these issues fitting a four link?

Very common problem with the Ridetech four link cradle. Why they designed it like that is a mystery to me.

Didn’t know that. To be fair my car has had some repairs during its lifetime and that does affect the fit as well.
It’s slowly getting better but still not 100% happy yet.
Got to figure out some reference points to measure against so I get it even and straight!

I have been keeping at it, hammering the cradle in to place. I’m in communication with ridetech to get some advice on if things are good enough.
I welded a spacer plate on one of the rails to bridge the gap since three of four contact points were good.
Attaching the cradle via thread forming bolts is probably good enough but I will use blind rivet nuts to get a bit more thread interface. I know there is the option to weld it in but no.

I’m finally satisfied to where I got the cradle positioned for the four link. Holes have been drilled and my ingenious plan of using rivnuts has begun.
Too bad it turns out my makeshift rivnut compressor turns out to have a 30% succes-rate!
As seen on YouTube, a long bolt held with a wrench while turning a nut to compress the rivnut perhaps only works on smaller dimensions.
Luckily I seem to have located a neighbor owning a nifty set of pliers to make my job easier.
After the cradle is positioned and some more grinding has been done I will use 2k epoxy primer to seal all of the floor, trunk, roof and inside doors.
Looking forward to put the car more together than tearing it apart!
Here are some pics of the rivnuts
175121

Perhaps not as strong as a regular nut and washer but way stronger than self tapping bolts in sheet metal

Ok just feel the need to update on the home made rivnut gizmo not working.
I saw a different video on YouTube where the guy drilled out the nut and used it with toothed washers as an “extension” of the rivnut. Long story short: it works!
Also found a pic of a 1:64 scale Camaro with a nice blue-cyan-tealish color I really liked...

This is how you do it! Hold nut with wrench and crank bolt. Job done

Yesterday I welded some holes shut and also got the side windows out. I know this thread isn´t much fun right now but taking pictures of scuffed up floor pans doesn´t make for exciting content. Soon however I will epoxy-prime and then I will post som before and after-pics!
Also got the cradle fitting snug and after priming I will get on to fitting the rear axle housing, welding tabs, powdercoat/painting it and filling it with new fresh internals.

I read somewhere in the forum an even better idea (after I was already done).
Test-fit the four link cradle first and when happy, drill the holes. When you do the mini tub later on you can weld plates with proper nuts on the inside while having the frame notched!:)

Did some more work yesterday evening/night. Gutted the doors completely and got the headliner out too.
Pro-tip: if you want to remove an old headliner be prepared to buy a new one, and also use your glasses and breathing protection! A lot of old crud raining down!
Luckily I wanted to replace the headliner due to a stitched tear right in the middle next to the light.

Doors ready to be cleaned out, sanded and primed. Then later properly soundproofed.

Hate to do something 90% (although it’s always during the last 10% you find something else that needs your attention) so I just had to take a look at what condition the roof was under the roof insulation.
Didn’t plan to remove them but two of them were sagging a bit.
Underneath things looked pretty okay considering there was zero paint/primer. Will get these cleaned up an epoxy-primed.
The reason I’m tearing the car apart during a four link install is that I have 2k primer in a rattle can for those vertical spaces. Once activated I better have all spaces prepped if I don’t want to blow my budget on 2k rattle cans!
I just need to prep the roof and one door, after that I should be able to lay down some sea sealer and then primer.

I just used a sharp blade to cut along the edges and after that it came off pretty easily. Figured the insulation under the reinforcement “cross” could be left alone since it would be hard to get new insulation in place or remove rust.
A flathead screwdriver or chisel (?) to get off the residue and a wire wheel to finish it off. Pretty satisfied with the result!:)

Not being able to reuse old u-bolts is holding me back a bit. Will get new ones next week so no biggie.
Getting quotes on shortening the drive shaft ($300 plus u joints etc) makes me considering having a new one built with stronger 1350 u joints and a new fresh slip yoke instead ($800).

As for your welder you can heat the metal up with a propane torch before you start welding, that will help with penetration and give you a better weld.

Yes Sir, Doing the Ridetech Bolt-On 4-Link with double R joints and coil overs. My issue is that a previous owner did a home made set of tubs, held in with sheet metal screws and seam sealer, a welded in upper shock relocation bar with tabs.. so i'll be cutting the old crap out and making patch panels to fix the goober stuff. They also did some trimming and rolling of the lips.. I think it was a drag car at some point in it's life. Not sure how the DSE tubs are going to match up or how the 4 link cradle will fit... but, i'll all come together somehow. You're more than welcome to stop by and lend a hand.. Yes these old cars have stories to tell once you start taking them apart! Smart move getting the double adjustable r-joints to dial it in the way you want and perhaps compensate for minor inconsistencies due to manufacturing tolerances, previous owners and collisions. If you live close to Gothenburg, Sweden, I´ll lend you a hand and drink all your beer!;)

Black paint on the axle housing- check. Next up is building the axle!:)
Any ideas on how to set the proper pinion depth (with shims) without pressing and pulling the bearing races a million times?

Got some hours down on the axle today. I also came to the realization that it would be to hard work not having a shop press, so I got one before resorting to unnecessary hammering and cursing.
I took some good advice from here on the forum and also watched EricTheCarGuy on YouTube.
Came together pretty well and I think the ring gear pattern looks pretty good.
177595
Honing the (old) pinion bearing so I can find out the proper stack of shims without to much hussle
177596
Getting these bearings on without a press would probably result in some sort of unhealthy frustration

Hi, fellow Swede here. I thought i should give you a tip regarding the driveshaft, i had http://www.northwestpropshafts.com/ make me a new one. 3,5" with built in slip yoke and 1350 universal joints (included) and it only cost 5600 SEK including shipping, took less than a week to get it too.
Im very satisfied with it :)

Thanks for the tip Håkan! Built in slip yoke was something I didn’t know existed. Will look in to that since next thing is to measure up and order a drive shaft!
Rear axle is done! Not really complicated but it takes a couple of tries to get it right so basically you build and tear the axle apart 5-10 times (at least I had to)!
Brakes mounted and I think it all looks pretty sweet!
Next up is measure for wheel & tire size, decide on A-arms in the front as well as steering box. Try to pick something up from a donor car or buy new? (Want something faster).

Waiting for the tubular control arms I have started sanding the body. Looks pretty good all in all (so far). There were some small bubbles in the old paint job and all of them lead down to small stains in the metal. Gotta get rid of em!
One of the rear wheel arches look pretty crappy and will be replaced.

Haha I don’t know about that. I frequently try to “zero” my garage when I have gotten some parts done though.
I spent some cash on a sander with a vacuum cleaner and it works great limiting the dust!

I know it’s been quiet here for a while but I have just had too many fun things going! Got a new full suspension mtb that needs to be ridden before everything turns to mush in the woods. Also got a new rifle so tricking that out and trying out ammo is another fun project.
There will be lots of rainy days where the garage is the only option anyway!
I have gotten the car sanded down even more and it looks pretty descent underneath.
Today I got a nice package from summit! Control arms and shocks!:)
Also got the side mirrors in good time so I can weld old holes and drill new ones.

before dismantling my 67 I had a very healthy 327 about 410-420 go and had just done the upper lowers, Viking double adjustables and low profiles. Man it was like a. Whole new machine. Then after my 6 grand paint job went South I cut the whole car apart. Addressed all my Rust, so that required floor and. That required mini tubs a d that required a d that required etc.etc.
Thee. I found an LS7 built by late mod racecraft out of a wrecked C6.
Now it's like many builds on here.

Haha that is the hardest part: stick to your plan (and budget).
It is really nice going through everything and knowing all rust, for instance, has been addressed.
Why did the paint job go south?

Had aa. Local Latino group have it and a dad and two sons worked together did nice work. Not SEMA but nice. One son that was really Into classic car rehab quit after dismantling my car. Other son got in fight wiith old man and thrower in jail. Dad tried to finish with mediocre help. I thought it was going to be fine because the block sanding looked so good. So I let them squirt it. Base coat was fine. Clear had some solvent pops on 3rd coat and they screwed up the stripes. Not crisp and clean where they turned over the hood and trunk edgges. I rod them 6 weeks re do, redo, redo, etc till I finally went and got it

no spring pocket bottom control arm verison?
I went with CPP's taller spindle/C5 brake setup whic you probably seen but at 750/set with the SK bearing upgrade(deletes the ABS line)in front
and the Boyd 17x7 junkyard dog rim fit nicely. I just thought those tall ball joints work but goofy.

GMC427: Yes thats right, went with the coil over version.
GB68: Thats a nice setup. In my case the taller balljoints was just a cheaper way of getting the same effect and re-using at least some parts!
Other than that I got the passenger side done yesterday evening. This side did put up a little fight and trying to get the rearward bolt in place was a bit of a pita. Anyhow, they are both in place now and next up is putting on the front brakes!
Ill see if I can find the time this evening!

It´s me and my wives anniversary day so it would be great to be finished by then so we could use it going to a restaurant or something (and also having that goal should make it easier for me to spend time in the garage).
Looking at whats left it might be tight, knowing that everything takes longer than anticipated. The plan ahead is:
Measuring for exact wheel/tire combos. What will fit? Order the right sizes
Buy new or old steering box to get faster ratio steering.
Sand down the remaining paint (50 percent done by now)
Weld some holes, change some parts that were rusted through
Body filler, sanding, primer, paint, clear.
Fix interior. High ambition and want to do all the work myself. Sewing leather seats, build a rear seat/sofa, mould carbon center console, etc.
5 and 6 are time consuming tasks that can really get out of hand.
I don´t want to start running the car having it 90% done since it´s a high risk of the remaining 10% never happening.
Got the front brakes mounted this weekend. Driver side no shims required and the caliper centered nice. Passenger side i need to shim the bracket closer to the disc.

I know it’s been quiet for a little while but I unexpectedly got a chance to buy a bigger lathe!
It had been sitting in a biker garage and was quite neglected but seemed healthy. Lately all of my efforts have been to get it cleaned up, serviced, repaired and upgraded.
Just finished installing digital read outs and the only thing remaining is to get some new carbide inserts and a new hand wheel for the tailstock!
With this I will be able to turn bigger pieces faster. Looking forward to it! Now where will I find a new milling machine...
