View Full Version : Ridetech 48 Hour Corvette Build Thread

I'm going to start this thread and keep updating it as parts arrive and ideas come up. The build dates are set for March 10th-12th.

This will be our second "48 Hour" build. The first, being the "48 Hour Camaro", was a very successful project that showed there are parts available (by multiple companies), that truly are "bolt-on". We started off with a bone-stock, 67 Camaro on day 1. By then end of the 2nd day, we had a monster, on the road and track. For information on that build, here's a link - http://www.ridetech.com/48hourcamaro/

This build will be the same style build (except we're using an eBay purchased '72 Corvette, this time!), a group of guys, a room full of parts, and three 16 Hour work days. The entire build will streamed live on YouTube, with manufacturer specific question and answer sessions and interviews throughout. As the C3 is disassembled, the parts that are not being reused, will be available for purchase on eBay. Once the car is done...we're take the car straight to the track! Below, I have the rendering, list of companies that are in on the build, and the new logo.

The "bolt on" pieces that make these cars perform like a modern sports car is what the build is really trying to showcase, by multiple companies. It works well for many companies because there are many people that like the same cars. The 48 Hour Camaro project worked very well in the past, now it's time for a new build!

One of the major areas where any 1972 vehicle will need improvement is in the braking department. The 48 Hour Corvette is no exception… in fact it might be the poster child example for the too much go and not enough whoa.

With “tiny” oem disc brakes on all 4 wheels bringing this car to a stop can a challenge under “normal” driving and this car is destine to see a significant share of what most civilians would describe as “abnormal driving”. So clearly something has to be done.

Thanks to Baer Brakes, after the 48 Hour clock ticks off, the Corvette will be riding on some serious state of the art stopping power. When we contacted Baer, we were found out we weren’t quite ready yet to get the stuff on a brown truck heading to Jasper.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/4301337R_zpsitl7xhfb-1.jpeg (http://s1356.photobucket.com/user/Ridetech2/media/4301337R_zpsitl7xhfb.jpeg.html)

14″ Front Extreme+ Brake System
This system features the 6S 6-piston Monoblock caliper mounted to a 14″ 2 piece slot, drill, zinc plated rotor. Baer systems include stainless steel brake hoses as well as calipers that have D.O.T compliant dust and weather seals. Quality SKF or Timken bearings used, along with NAS high grade stainless hardware for our pre-assembled 2-piece rotor. The 6S and 6R (R-Spec) calipers are Baer’s Flagship offering, and are built out of a single piece of US sourced 2618 forged aluminum.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/extrrwpark_zps7lajwjf3-1.jpg (http://s1356.photobucket.com/user/Ridetech2/media/ext-rr-w-park_zps7lajwjf3.jpg.html)

14″ Rear Extreme+ Brake System with Park Brake
This system features the 6S 6-piston caliper mounted to a 14″ 2 piece slot, drill, zinc plated rotor. Baer systems include a unique billet backing plate that not only acts as a caliper mount, but also houses the bankisa (1-piece) park shoe. This is a more modern (better working) park brake assembly then the more commonly used drum in hat park brake systems. Systems feature stainless steel brake hoses as well as calipers that have D.O.T compliant dust and weather seals. NAS high grade stainless hardware is used our pre-assembled 2-piece rotor.. The 6S and 6R (R-Spec) calipers are Baer’s Flagship offering, and are built out of a single piece of US sourced 2618 forged aluminum.

Why Purchase the Extreme+?

US Made Forged MonoBlock caliper
Offers the exact same look front and rear. Baer is the only brake manufacturer that offers this!
Calipers have dust and weather seals
Proper banjo fittings (NOTE: Baer does not use any pipe thread fittings)
Everything needed per corner (including hoses and fittings) except for in General fit applications
6061 T-6 billet aluminum hat (anodized black) and bolted to the rotor
High grade U281 fine thread stainless hardware (with captured nuts). Rotor comes pre-assembled.
Includes a set of 6061-T6 billet machined hubs with Timken or SKF bearings installed. Hubs are pre-assembled with bearings, races, studs and packed with Redline synthetic grease.
The 6S Extreme+ Caliper Features:

The 6S/6R monoblock caliper is Baer’s flagship offering, and machined out of a single piece of US sourced 2618 forged aluminum
The only 6 piston forged monoblock offered to the road-going/street market
Stainless steel pistons, abutments and noise suppression springs
Staggered piston sizes to minimize pad wear
Uses the common D1247 (DR11) race pad backing plate, that is shared by many other competition calipers.
Dual seals (dust/weather and pressure) to meet D.O.T specifications
Caliper can accept 13.5” to 16” rotors.
Machined logo that is hand painted
Red, Black or Silver Powder Coat Finish (custom colors available)
Available in Front or Rear for that same cosmetic matching look
Rear systems incorporate a drum in hat park brake
Rear systems for c-clip style axles include Baer’s Verislide self centering brackets
Uses correct banjo style fittings, Baer does not use any pipe thread
100% MADE IN USA with US sourced material

The Remaster is a fully machined, billet aluminum master cylinder that features:

Fully Machined out of aluminum in Phoenix AZ
Comes standard in Anodized or Polished (custom colors and finishing available for special order – additional charges apply)
Compact short design which allows this master to fit in a wide variety of applications (great for early Mustangs with modern boosters such as 1967-1969)
GM and Ford will use the same master (Firewall mount is designed to fit both). Will include a bullet (insert adapter) for long pushrod applications
Machined screw in caps for easy access to fill (no tools needed). Caps are knurled at edge to make removal easy.
Bolt on Firewall mount bracket. This master can be reused in other projects with a change of the bolt on bracket
Laser etched logos and part numbers for a finished look (on anodized version)
Bolt on proportioning valve block (additional option) is available

I don't know about you but I've never seen a '72 Corvette with Ridetech level 3 coil cover suspension, a Lingenfelter LS7, Baer brakes and more. I think we all know of a pretty wild Blue '72 but it's drastically different.

I think the term you're looking for is plug and play because this build is far from unoriginal because the corvette protouring trend is still gaining momentum.

All that aside, how often do you see a '72 Vette driving around anywhere these days. Rarely unless you're at a car show or event.

The best part of a build like this is giving everyone a recipe for building there own. It takes away a lot of the questions and fitments. It also proves how well everyone's parts work and work together.

The one thing that the Ridetech crew is adamant about is running off the shelf parts. The team cars all run the same parts everyone else is buying.

Magnum 6-Speed Transmission

The kingpin of TREMEC’s high performance line-up, the T-56 Magnum double-overdrive 6-speed transmission takes the very best from TREMEC’s current OEM technologies and pairs it with the most popular features of the TKO 5-speed.

Able to withstand a massive 700 lb-ft. of torque while providing unbelievably crisp shifts, no other manual transmission on the planet offers as much combined strength, versatility, and general ease-of-use as the T-56 Magnum.

Known in its original equipment form as the ‘TR-6060′, the Magnum is an aftermarket version of the same transmission found in many of today’s most celebrated factory super cars – including the ZR1 Corvette and ACR Viper – giving you refinement where you want it and strength where it counts.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/tremec_transmissions_logo2300x225_zpsqae-1.jpg (http://s1356.photobucket.com/user/Ridetech2/media/tremec_transmissions_logo2-300x225_zpsqaetju6s.jpg.html)https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/t56300x225_zpstdt45417-1.jpg (http://s1356.photobucket.com/user/Ridetech2/media/t56-300x225_zpstdt45417.jpg.html)

The aftermarket’s premier 6-speed performance manual transmission
700 lb-ft. of torque capacity
Reasonably light at 135 lbs. dry
Multiple shifter locations & dual speedo pickups for unmatched versatility
Choice of two different gear ratio sets (2.66 or 2.97), with unique double overdrive ratios
Incredibly short, extremely low-effort shift throws, with crisp, precise engagement
Modern OE supercar technology for the ultimate pro-tourers, road-racers, and more.

I have a project that can use C3 (68-82) Corvette disc spindles and I am wondering, are those spindles a new design with no basic design parameters taken from stock type spindles? Like do they use different application ball joints could they be used for a slightly different car?
Just wondering if they might "fix" a compatability issue with my project.
Is I have a want for big disc brakes for my 66 Caprice and my choices are limited to 67-70 b-car disc or C3 disc. As for redesigns I had plans to see if Markus over at SC&C whip up a set of SPC uppers, then figure out if I needed to do something with lowers.
The car is most likely going to have air ride, which way I go is dependent upon so financial factors coming up in spring.
Anyway, are they complete departure from C3 or upgraded/modified off stock geometry? Is taller, but use same ball joints, different arms different brake mounting points?

The spindles are the same as used on the ridetech tru-turn 1st Gen Camaro spindle and uses all brake kits that fit 1st Gen Camaro. http://www.ridetech.com/store/ridetech-spindles-pair.html

That may answer WHAT the are but my question is can they be used on my 66 Caprice? Or are the not a direct replacement for Corvette spindles?.
See C3 Corvette spindles swap out to 66 b car, allowing disc brakes with decent parts coverage over 67-70 b car RISC brakes.
I have been looking at way to swap in disc brakes to my 66 Caprice, just wondering if these parts might also work for my application?

I'd have to do some digging, I've personally never tried it or had anyone else attempt it either.

OK, so what year Corvettes will this build apply to? My neighbor has a 78 25th anniversary edition and I think he may be interested in this build.

OK, I love that your making stuff for the C3 Corvette, but that statement is so wrong!. Tiny??? challenge to stop??? Stock they have 12", 1.25" thick vented rotors with 4 piston calipers front and back, good enough even for the L88 race cars at Le Mans (with twin pins and upgarded insulators).

I believe I just saw a set of some Falkens roll through the door for this build too :D

We've been using Azenis RT615K on the cars here for quite sometime, if you're looking for a sticky tire....These are wicked!

Josh, where are you guys located? Im in Norfolk VA, so Im sure I can't make it, but just curious...

Just to clarify...anyone is welcome to attend the Corvete build this week. Bring your hotrod!

There will be a significant number of manufacturers here to oversee the installation of their parts...Rick Love from Vintage Air, Mike Copeland from Lingenfelters, Will Baty from Centerforce. Gabi Baer and Rick Elam from Baer Brakes, Michael Manning from American Autowire, John McLoud from Classic Instruments, Mark Bowler, Dave Schardt from Forgeline, Robin Lawrence from Holley EFI, Tim Anderson from Racepak, Paul Hammond from C&R Racing, Josh Powers from Custom Image Corvette, and likely a few more. Chad Reynolds is hosting the show on the live webfeed. Tim Strange is coming up from NAshville...Bill Howell adn Brian Finch have threatened to make an appearance. IT should be a good party!

The Corvette build will be kind of like an old fashioned barn raising...a bunch of friends getting together to eat, drink, and build a car. The TV camera thing is a happy coincidence. We've made a lot of preparations, but there is no script and everything is live. If something goes wrong...even VERY wrong...you'll see it as it happens. Hopefuly our collective experience will allow us to acheive the same succes as the first 48 Hour build in 2011.

A late development for the project...Snap On Tools and Monster Energy Drink have gotten on board. They have lots of friends that we don't even know yet...looking forward to that!

If you want to watch live...and participate in the live chatroom, here is the link: http://www.ridetech.com/48hourcorvette/

See you all on Tuesday morning!

It was cool to see Mike Copeland of Lingenfelter and Diversified Speed. I used to live right around the corner from Diversified Speed in Brighton, MI. They were my main parts source.

Was reading the chat room over there and had to agree with something someone posted. They are building this really nice car, with a ton of really nice, high end parts, but they put the cheapest Chinese hunk of junk air cleaner on it? Guess its a sponsor driven build, but that's just cheap!

A 48 hour "build" highlights just how cookie cutter the whole game has become.

I understand what you're saying, that the 48 hour build marketing may be a bit typical , but how can this particular car be cookie cutter if it's the only one like it ? It's the first one , using new products on the suspension .
Actually, I like the 48hour build, I think it's great .

Man aint that the truth!! I spent many years watching everyone build their cars and never truly appreciated all of the hard work until I built my car. After watching this build, I think it would take me 3 years on my own to do what they have done and it wouldn't be near as nice. Really looking forward to the finished product!!

We stopped the live broadcast because frankly, we had to return the rented video equipment. We will provide regular updates with pics and video. We are still working on the car. Recent progress: headlites work, wipers work, e brake works, harness bar in, rear remote shock reservoirs mounted to the harness bar, doors installed, brake line fixed and rebled, console made, seats installed. Next up...install doors, set ride height, do an alignment, weigh car, take to bowling green to chassis dyno at holley. More later...thanks so much for watching!

Square setup... Very nice for tire management... Also with the very near 50\50 front to rear weight distribution it should be a mean handling car.

Nicely done.

We will be at the Texas Goodguys event this weekend MArch 20-22, and again the next weekend March 28-29 for the Optima Ultimate Street Car event. We can take passengers at Goodguys but not at Optima, so if you want to ride come to the Goodguys event. If you want to see the car run on the road course, come to the Optima event. Better yet...come to both!

Right now we are trashing to make some minor revisions [that ALL new cars seem to need]...more aggressive brake pads, seat position adjustment, replace a bad power window motor, heat sheilding, finish up the fire suppression system, a thorough wheel alignment, finish the center console.

Along with getting the Corvette ready to go, we are trying to finish up my own 69 Mustang to compete at Goodguys and Optima. Just because we didn't have enough to do

Ok thanks for more video harassment Bret.

Just a couple things to point out

We did not short cut the car anywhere. Me or Bret would not allow it. I have to drive this thing and drive it fast. It is fast. I ran the car flat out on the first lap that's how confident I was in it. I was so confident in it I ran it on the road course with no hesitation at speed.

This build was incredible.

Ridetech shops capabilities are endless!!! I would ask them for a part and poof there's parts.

I love the video.

So the million dollar question it, did it beat the C7?

Not yet, but it is amazingly close :)

The C7 is about as fast as it will get [for now]. The 48 Hr Corvette will get a LOT better in the next 2 events. They never fall out of the trailer fast. At the first SCCA event at Bowling Green...the C7 Z06 was about 3 seconds a lap faster on a 55 second lap. To put that in context, the Z06 was fast lap time of 93 cars [including some with slicks].

I have to say that C7 Z06 is possibly the best car I have ever driven. Between the launch control, the Magnaride shocks, the sticky tires, and the ABS...there is not much left for the driver to do...except enjoy the ride!

There will be a good group of fast guys at Texas Goodguys...Kyle Tucker, Josh Leisinger, Rob McGreagor, my 69 Mustang...that will be a good test of the Corvette's capabilities.

Who's going?

Thanks guys!

Chris Smith was able to pilot the Corvette to a convincing victory in ALL of the segments of the GTV class competition…1st place in the autocross…1st place in the speed stop…1st place in the road course…and 1st place in the design and engineering category. This all added up to a 1st place finish overall with the highest points total ever in USCA history! (Event Results)

Smitty had this to say about the results: “Obviously we are thrilled with this win! Although it has come early in the season, it is the result of years of collective experience, months of planning, and at this point, several weeks of intense physical work to get this car built and sorted out. I can’t say enough about the kickass performance of the Lingenfelter power, the grip of the Falken tires, the stopping power of the Baer brakes, and the handling of the RideTech suspension!”

RideTech President and 48 Hour Corvette owner Bret Voelkel commented: “The cooperation of all the suppliers for the 48 Hour project AND the performance of their products has been stunning. I am so proud of the team of people that has worked towards this goal. AND…this project has only just begun…we hope to repeat this winning performance many times over the summer!”

In addition to the 48 Hour Corvette, the RideTech 69 Mustang was also in serious competition for GTV class honors. Bret was able to run 2nd in the Speed Stop, 3rd in the road course, and 5th in the autocross to end up with a 9th place overall finish. A failed fuel pump relay prevented completing the road rally segment and a potential 2nd place overall finish. Bret commented on the performance of the Mustang: “It’s been awhile since I’ve driven this old girl…it felt really good to get back into an air suspension car. We’ve got a few refinements to make and this thing will be super competitive!”

The next outing for both cars will be the Goodguys autocross in Raliegh, NC on April 17-19.
