hey guys I have a 1970 Firebird and I'm going to install a Chevy small block engine in it.

the Chevy small block starter is on the opposite side of the engine compared to a Pontiac. the original 70 Firebird Pontiac engine wiring harness comes out of the firewall and right over the drivers side of the intake manifold, then down the front of the engine, and then under the engine where it connects to the starter.

I have two questions:

1. Can someone please post a picture of a 1970-72 Camaro and how the engine wiring harness is routed to connect to the starter?

2. what aftermarket wiring harnesses provide the best instructions and are the easiest to understand and install?

thank you the picture would really help me out a lot.

Are you re-wiring the entire car or just the engine compartment? Is the car stock or have you added things such as AC or aftermarket gauges?
IF you decide to use the stock harness, there are only a couple of wires going to the starter-
Thick red, a purple (thinner) and a yellow (if you are still using points). Pretty simple. The only hassle using the original harness would be unwrapping/re wrapping it to remove those wires and re route them.

I used American AutoWire's Classic update for my install. It is great! Here is a couple of links to check out if you decide on AAW-

Camaro engine harness- http://www.americanautowire.com/PDFLink/92965927%20500668%20IN%207.0.pdf

Here is the firebird harness instructions- http://www.americanautowire.com/shop/complete-wiring-kit-1970-73-firebird/ It sounds like they use the camaro harness as the base kit and put in some specific firebird connectors in the firebird kit.

Using the AAW CU camaro engine harness, the wires are extra long and can be routed almost anyway you want. I do not believe the CU harness is compatible with the OEM one (example- horn relay is wired differently and in another location). In the end, I would call AAW tech and they can give you more specifics.

that's great thank you I was looking at that exact same harness and yes I will be re wireing in the entire car. I plan on using aftermarket gauges but no air conditioner.

since this is a Firebird and the engine wiring harness comes out of the firewall on the driver side and connects to the starter on the driver side I was curious how the wires are routed for the Camaro (chevy engine) since the starter is on the passenger side.

what gauge set up did you use?

as far as the aftermarket gauges go I was looking out one of the classic dash kits or just putting some aftermarket gauges in an original Trans Am turned aluminum dash face face.

I guess what I'm trying to say is does the starter wiring harness on a 70 camaro go over the top of the engine on the passenger side and down the front of the engine to plug into the starter underneath the engine

On a SBC in a camaro, the wires go from the fuse panel, along the firewall (over trans) and then down the rear pass side of motor (just aft of the header/manifold). Then it goes forward to the starter. Be sure to secure the wires so there is no contact with the header/manifold.

perfect thank you very much. Thats just the opposite of a pontiac motor. now I know how to route the starter wires in my Firebird if I install a Chevy motor. Thank you.
