Were 2.56 gears available for the GM 8.2" 10 bolt rears? I see them for BOP and 12 bolts all the time. I've also seen references where the 2.56 was offered in 10 bolt 8.2s in Chevelles, Novas, and Camaros, but not been able to find one or aftermarket (ie Richmond Gear).
I've got a 2.73 limited slip in a 72 chevelle rear and would like to swap out for a 2.56 or find a 2.56 68-72 complete rear, but no luck.
Are they rare or non existent?

I don't know if any -below 3.0- gear set has been tooled up by the aftermarket for any diff. Gernal experience is the OE, used (or rarely, NOS) is about it.
Watch Ebay. That's what I did when I wanted an extra tall 8.0 Ford (later changed my mind), and a 3.07 Dana 27 (still looking)

May I ask your application?

Gary,

Have you tried Monzaz on CO? He is very knowledgeable on rear differentials and has a lot of hard to find parts.

72 Olds, 5.3 LSx motor, 3.42 1st gear T10, 2.72 chevelle rear. I do mostly hiway driving, a 2.56 might be a bit better,

csouth,
Yeah, might try the some of the other forums too with differential specialists. But thought here to try first. Asking for chevelle parts to put on an Olds over at CO is kinda asking for trouble. lol

I don't think he has an affinity for one vs. the other. He's in the business of building rear diffs....

Yeah, maybe a PM would be more appropriate

I know a Pontiac buddy in college pulled a 2.56 out of a wagon to put in his 64 GTO to get better mileage going to school and back to Dallas(200+ miles). Seemed like it would almost idle in 1st gear(stick) at 30 mph!

I have an original 2.56 gear set out of my 71 Nova if you are interested? The car was a low mileage granny owned car and the rear was quiet when they were pulled. If interested shoot me a PM, Thanks-
