I have a 62 impala thinking about having a 9inch ford rear end installed how much would it cost to have a shop install it? The engine I am planning on a LS3 crate motor. How much HP and Torque can my rear end handle. The rear end is stock in my car right now but planning future upgrades. Thanks for your advice.

a 9" inch has lots of options factoring in on the cost of the diff.
i would expect around $200 charge for installing a basic 9 direct fit rear end into your impalla.
you can get cheap 9" from quick pefromance, a decent 9" from currie or moser. or a quality 9" from strange. all of these companys make bolt in ones for your car. cost all depends on what options you want.
your car should have the 8.2 drop out diff. i would say its good to about 300 to 350 hp. an impalla is heavy so the power capacity of the diff drops with weight.

You'll likely want a larger pinion yoke so you may need a rear driveshaft too.
You'll need to ask yourself if there are any other things you want to replace- link bushings, etc. depending on the shop rate id say $200-500 would be acceptable for labor only on swapping the rear out and installing the third member and axles. You'll also need to change your rear brakes out.. No point in keeping stock drums on it right ? :)

I have Quick Performance 9" and I'm not sure why it would be considered "low end". It is brand new from end to end and top quality. They offer many more affordable options in comparison to the other big names.

I ordered my housing and axles from Moser. I ordered my complete third member from Quick Performance complete with Strange nodular case, 31 spline Eaton TruTrac, and 1350 billet yoke. Just like other vendors, you can order it equipped however you wish. You'll just save some $$$ through Quick.

If you are doing an Impala with stock rear suspension get a 9" with the extra 4th upper link bracker welded and add it. Most of the racers evenback in the 60s added it. I think Global has a different upper arm for a 9" so there may be some interference.

Factory rear's weakest spot is the small axles with 17 splines. Some guys swap in the Dana side gears and 28 spline axles to beef it up some. Much HP and sticky tires will hurt it.

I raced a 64 Impala in the early 79s with probably right at 380-400 hp and "cheater slicks" and a 4 speed and it held up fine-but I had an aluminum flywheel that did not hit it too hard. I did rip all the ring gear bolts out of a pumpkin that had a ring gear spacer before I knew what they were.
