I'm having trouble locating a 275/55r20 in a load range e. So does anyone tow a car/trailer about 6000 pounds with a load range d tire? I will only tow 5-7 times a year. I will have 10-15% tongue weight and its a half ton truck with weight distributing hitch.

10% is only putting 600 lbs on the truck, and with a load distributing hitch, it should spread it over all four wheels of the truck, so I don't see a problem with running D tires.

I run the Toyo open county mt tires. 33x12.5x20 and pull just about every weekend. They are load range D.

I have the TOYO open country ATII tires on a 2007 Silverado HD2500 diesel. They too are a load range D. Just got back from having a new set put on about 30 minutes ago. I got 60k+ miles out of my last AT's.
I pull a Homesteader enclosed trailer full of granite to Florida (farthest I've been). Never had a problem.

Biggest thing to remember, if your truck calls for D then you CAN run one load rating down or one speed rating down from OEM rating on door tags, BUT you should always try to run heaviest load rating available. And how well you want your truck to ride. Just don't drop more than one load rating or one speed rating.
In Indiana they now have DOT rules and have started ticketing any truck and trailer that combined plate ratings of 10,100lbs or higher require DOT nu hers, certifications, equipment.
So biggest trick I have found is too follow up with having truck and trailer DOT inspected and keep the paperwork in truck. Also keeping all relavent equipment like triangles, flares, fuses, fire extinguishers etc. ready. Doing this allows you to be "legal" without acquiring actual DOT numbers.
