Does anybody use any action cams other than the go pro? I was looking at the Ion camera because they seem to be cheaper and offer a model directed towards motorsports, but didn't know how the sound and video quality is. I saw a few cars on the USCA show using what looked like the Ion so figured they might be decent.

How well does the GPS feature work and is it useful for autocross? From some of the reviews it looks like it only works when you're in contour's software.

Do you like the replay xd as much as the go pro? I've used a go pro before, but was just wondering what else was out there and how they compare. which one do you have? PrimeX? Mini1080?

thanks.

I borrowed a Garmin VIRB Elite camera for our last event of the season and posted my review of it here.

With the release of the gopro 4 black...gopro is back to being the best
Sony as100v or their new mini version is a great cam...to me it beats out the gopro 3 black plus
Not sure how the gopro 4 basic and silver compare to sony as100v or 3 plus

Replay 1080xd/mini was nice but now its behind the game ..dobt recall it having gps nor wifi/nfc
update..i just googled prime X..congrats replayXD

Im going to wait ot out till.sony comes oit with a 4k version to compete with the gp4black
Sony uses the better video format xavc-s. ..other povs just use mp4..

If you want something a tad unique
Check out the kodak pixpro SP360
it could possibly be a cool roof mounted cam to get the Grand theft auto 2 helicopter view

If a pov doesnt offer gps feature you can add it..theirs a free software you can use but youll have to use your own portable gps to collect the data to add it later with software edit

I want to stay around $250 so the gopro 4 is out for me. If I get a gopro it will be the 3 or 3+ white.

when you say "congrats replayxd", does that mean you're impressed with the Prime X specs, or just glad they released something new? I like the form of the cylindrical cameras better than the square ones.

Does the 4k video look any better on a regular 1080 HD TV or only on the new UHD TVs (I won't have one until they come way down in price)?

I'm unfamiliar with how to capture my own GPS data. I know you can buy the pucks from Garmin, but do they come with their own DAQ system to write to a file. Sorry for all the questions, but I'm not up to date on the new gadgets - I don't even have a smart phone. All my editing would be done on a PC and viewing on a HDTV. Thanks again for the info.

Mike, did you check out the VIRB Elite from Garmin? It's pretty cool and has some useful features. One being it is VERY user friendly, slide the huge power button and the camera turns on and starts recording...slide it back and the camera stops and turns off. It also collects GPS data at the same time and gives you many different templates to use to overlay that data onto your video.

All of the data on this video came directly from the camera, automatically... I think it lists for $399 but I saw it on sale on Amazon for $249 I think.

I'm used to my GoPro, even though in a lot of respects I'm still learning on how to fully use it.

Our Marketing Guy likes the RePlay in that because of the shape they can be used under a Car very easily. I haven't used them and have seen the results. From the Results, I think my GoPro 3 Black has a better picture

yes Lance, I was just looking at your review and the listing on Amazon. it's very interesting. I didn't even know Garmin made cameras. i'll keep this one in mind for sure if I can get it for $249.

im at.my 2nd job atm
But in your case this will be the best

for the prime x, yeah they finally added the features theyve been needing

Dont really need 4k atm..but its always nice to start with higher resolution for editing/downing resolution.
As100v has the better night vids and audio pickup vs 1080replay a d gp3black plus

Also 4k on gopro 3 is worthless..not enough frame rate

That is a great camera, I like the slide switch too, never know when mine is on or off.

Again if your in the 250 range the best would be the sony as100v .. their new HDR AZ1 can be had for 250..its a mini version kn the as1000 but you loose the built in gps function..unless you get their new wrist remote to retain...also loose battery life.

the new prime X looks awesome and always loved their fov choice of 140-5? As i never noticed any bend distortions at top corner of frames
Can also get for $250
They have the best battery life at 3.5hrs
Next best would be sony as100 in that department

Im definitely going to look up some vids for the new primeX and compare as its possibly the most appealing for its price to performance ratio

Our local SCCA Region's annual Banquet was Saturday night and Garmin donated a VIRB Camera and some other gear to the silent auction to raise funds for a local charity. Guess who was the lucky winner? :D

Not only did I get a great camera at a great price, but got to make a donation to help a worthy cause at the same time. Thanks Garmin!!

Just an update. I pulled the trigger on the Garmin VIRB Elite and the RAM mount. Excited to get it and play around with it. I'll post video after our first event at the end of March. Thanks for the help and recommendations.
