We tend to do a fair amount of fabrication projects and now some metal shaping projects, which tends to be all forms of work we can offer to people. But I have found it hard to post in here due to the fact that a lot of it is not Pro-Touring related, even though the same skills can be used in the pro-touring world.. So I decided to start this thread here to perhaps show some of the things we do which could open up some future project possibilities with pro-touring cars..

This first post is of a Porsche 550 Spyder fender I created recently in a class for metal shaping.. I will be adding more over the next few days but it is getting late and tomorrow is a long day.

Wow! Can you give us a few step by steps to show how that was made? Very nice craftsmanship.

This one will be a tough one to give to many details on because I didn't take a lot of in progress pictures, I have a few on my phone I will upload soon.. But I started out with shrinking the perimeter with a stump type fixture and stretched the center, which is the results of the first few pictures.. You can see the V's drawn on the panel and that is the area that I shrunk.. If you just stretch everything it will get to thin.. Many do it that way but I like to see that the metal integrity is kept..

The pictures in my phone are of the edge rolling, that may be interesting for some of you to post.

Here's a picture of the Chevelle we are doing currently in the shop.. The metal work on this was just normal panel replacement but in the second picture you can see we did a custom trans tunnel for a little more clearance.

I think falls under the fabrication category.

I have quite a few more pictures to post but this is the last one for now, I have a cross-member to build.
It's a tool I built to replicate the function of a Pullmax machine. I based it off of someone's plans and purchased a lot of the machined parts from the guy.
We need to get a Mill and Lathe in here then we will be able to do just about anything.

I will post a picture of one of the parts I made using this machine.

Metal shaping is one of those things you can explain to someone all day long, but getting the feel of it is a whole different story. Hard for the average person to comprehend how something that starts out looking like a beat up pile of lumps can come out so beautiful in the end.

Nice work , as usual.

It's MAGIC!!!!! Sometimes myself I have to stop and sit back and take a look at what I'm doing when it comes to stuff like metal shaping.. It really is a art and I am really impressed by those that do it for a living!! Unfortunately very few people really understand what it takes to make a panel.

Here's one of my english wheels modified to take a soft upper wheel, and using it to roll a wheel tub, you can basically do this instead of using a slip roller.

Here is a die I made for the reciprocating hammer and a part that was created by using it.
You can see some trial and error pics as it took a few times to figure out how much pre-stretch the part needed before running through the machine.

Not much but we are in the works on that as well.. Maybe in 2-3 weeks.

I want all this OG technology and knowledge :(

It takes time, I have really been focusing on metal work over the last year, and even more so as of lately. It's the future of where the business will be going.

And I think the quest for tooling never ends. I'm always wanting another piece of equipment, but now I find it usually means me building it.

I got the door skin welded on and crimped today. It will need a little detail work but that will come later, I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Site looks pretty good.

Some of my best artistic work was done freehand & sometimes when I was so tired, I was in a extra creative state of mind I don't get to be in very often.

Hopefully you can get some good interest into doing some decorative panels there. Pretty cool.

Could maybe post new website under multi-media ???

I'm pretty happy with it for knowing nothing about building a site..
And I'm hoping to get some interest in the panels but as of now I don't want to many special requests as the hard part is drawing them out and it takes me a long time, so I think i'm going to get a plotter so I can adjust the sizing and make it easier to do customs ones.. We will see though.

I think me & you might be on the same page on some skills. If we had spent the time & dedication that Chip Foose had from an early age, we might be really good (& faster) at the skill of drawing. But otherwise, drawing can be a distraction from just getting the project done. Having potential customer provide a useable image & you being able to easily resize & mark it out sounds like a plan. Can't take too long to do & be able to sell, right?

Soooo, you gave me an idea. Not sure when I'll have time to get back to starting my under hood .063 alum /perforated vented engine bay cover, but my emblem design could look good on each side of the engine between the vented portions.

Does a version of this design look possible & in a small size, like 12 x 12 ? This is a carving I hand made from uhmv plastic, design embroderied in my headrests by others off my design also. Just curious right now. You got me thinkin.

Try doing something with the edge [fold it over, roll it etcl] to make it look finished and then sell them as wall art.

THose would be cool in places other than on a car. They'd be neat as wall "posters", or filler panels in drop ceilings.
A drop ceiling panel is a good idea, never would have thought of that one.

Try doing something with the edge [fold it over, roll it etcl] to make it look finished and then sell them as wall art.

I kinda want to start framing them. I have ideas, but not enough time.
I also wanted to get the hang of bead rolling before I went to that step. Once I get about 20 or so in the office, I will probably make a bunch of frames on the weekend. I will have to adjust pricing if I frame them but I think it would also give them more of a completed feel.

Made some good progress on this 57'
We made a stanchion for every body mount location for the floor and rear supports to locate the rear trunk hinge mount location to verify that everything stays where we want it as we cut things apart to re-body the car.

A drop ceiling panel is a good idea, never would have thought of that one.

Not to continue to derail your thread with non-car stuff, but incorporating a recessed "can" light into one of these metal panels would be cool.
On a 2'x4' wide drop ceiling panel, you could mount two small dim "can" lights, and form the shape of a car on the panel, making the lights look like headlights.

Hmmm.. that is something to think about. Or maybe some small Led lights on wall panels.

Hi, you helped me out with advice on here the other day. Thanks again. I have had the opportunity to watch a bloke I once worked with form a front fender like the Porsche one you have pictured, it's awesome seeing something like that start to finish. I regard myself as a good tradesperson and take great pride in my work, but you my friend are exceptionally talented, I could only aspire to that level of craftsmanship, you do need to come out here, because I could sit and watch you turn that stuff out all day long. I know you guys are already onto it, but this is one very talented individual. Cheers and good luck mate.

Thank you,, really appreciate it.
And it may sound stupid but I would love to make it there and tour all of the shops and look at all of the different body style cars getting built over there.
I really love the Charger from down under.. I was researching into getting one transported to the states at one time for a build..

Hi, I remember as a kid the tv adds for the valiant chargers, they started at $1800, cheaper than our ford's and holden's, the drivelines were good but the bodies suffered from rust problems.
The other muscle cars went up in value dramatically, the charger's have gone up in value but lag behind the others. Our locally manufactured cars are soon going to be a thing of the past, the factories close down in the not to distant future and everything will come from overseas. Just too small a market I guess. I don't know if I missed it somewhere, but your first name? I can keep calling you "mate" but that's how rumours start.😊😊☺😃😊😊 Cheers Trevor.

We made some progress on the 57' since last posting, and should see a lot of progress over the next few weeks.

The shell was sent out for blasting, then epoxied with SPI epoxy and then we started putting the body panels back on.. Next step will be to set it on the chassis, and weld the exterior panels on.

Glad you like the work, I have thought about moving to a different location many times to get more into the heart of a hot rodding town, but then I figured those areas are just to congested it in.. I think it's better to build your own market at your location.. I'm still surviving so it must be working. lol.

I've also been working on my truck a little bit. I'm still not released to ride my dirt bike so chances are there will be some more updates on this over the next few weeks..

I made some really good progress on the bed, I have it pretty well roughed in, however I'm going to move to something else next, I'm trying to get the overall vision built, and then once I am happy with everything I can start focusing on the smaller details.

I'm trying to add hints of originality here and there, so I made the outer bed supports so that they mimicked what would be original to the truck, I changed the bead a little and changed the radius so that it flowed into the bed towards the bottom. I could have done something that would have appeared to be more custom with much less effort but I like them this way so I think it was worth the effort.

I'm starting to agree since we have been keeping really busy, I just want to step it up a little bit, however I think the key there is just to build one for yourself and show what can be done.
We don't have a really strong hot rod market in my immediate area but we are not far from areas that do.

It's a 37' Packard that we did from the ground up, we pulled it out of the guys barn and it was in really rough shape..

There is a really funny story that goes along with that car.. Years ago this was my Grandfathers car, which was suppose to be given to my stepfather, however the family was poor and my Grandfather traded it for a keg of beer for a graduation present for my stepfather. So to make a long story short he lost his car to a keg of beer. lol.

Many years pass and the car comes to the shop, needless to say my stepfather was very surprised to see we were restoring his old car, he was glad to see that it was being restored even though it wasn't his any more.. The owner of the car had no idea the ties to the car that any of us had. I really like 30's era cars so this just made restoring the car that much cooler.

I'll check out the project right after this.. Here's a little update on the 57' I would do a whole project thread on it but it's really not pro-touring at all so I don't want to take up a whole thread on something not Pro-Touring related. However putting it here is still a good way to show some of our work.. The process we are going through right now is no different than what we would do on any car so it still fits in some aspects.

Here's some pics of the 57' the quarters are welded on and body lines are set, this was no easy task, it was a fight getting the body lines as nice as they are with very little cutting, the back end by the trunk was a royal. P.i.t.A. we still need to do some fine tuning work but we get everything as close as we can without panel modifications. Or as little as possible in this case. then we go back over the whole car to make adjustments to the sheet metal to get everything how we want. Very time consuming process.

Hi Chad. Looking good mate. I have only just come to realize the amount of emphasis and work a really good body guy puts into lines and gaps etc. I guess a nice straight body and shiny paint pull people in, but it's the countless hours that go into the gaps and lines that show the real quality of a job. As usual old mate I never tire of seeing the calibre of your workmanship. Cheers Trevor.

At this point the first thing I look at on a car is the lines, and how straight the car is, then the finish.. There is way more work into getting good lines than most people realize..
I'll have some posts coming through on my truck soon, but I want to wrap up the task at hand before I put any pics up.. Hoping by the end of the weekend.

OK Chad, I have to assume that repair is in the the lower rear corner somewhere, given that's the area you've taken a photo of. I can't see it. You're bloody good mate.

A good metal patch is like a good hair transplant job, you won't know it's there. Doing metal work, I kinda see it actually looking for it, but then I don't. I have a HD desktop monitor screen. Also read about it on another forum.:secret:

The biggest difference between this tri-5 & thousands of others down the road would be in 10 to 30 plus years from now when a future buyer decides to strip & redo the body. They should have an opposite of the usual surprise of what's under the paint.
Between all the attention to detail on rust protection prep & having something like SPI epoxy primer sprayed where the sun won't shine, who knows how long a vehicle like this could last with only part time use & proper care.

Are the factory trunk emblems & lock going back on? To me the 57's with a shaved trunk lid just look a whole lot cleaner.

About 10-12 inches of the lower fender was replaced, bought a patch from carsinc and welded it in, patch was ok, but it surely wasn't perfect.

Man, I sure hope you are right, I'm sure anybody crazy enough to strip the car down would be surprised however the thought of anybody actually doing that or the thought of this car having a accident or anything of that nature just scares the crap out of me, after working on a car for so many years you hate to see anything happen to them.

To be honest we have striped quite a few cars now and I can't think of any of them that surprised me from being solid, I typically find things like roofing tar with flashing or aluminum foil stuffed in rust holes, and possibly some chicken wire to help hold things together. It's so frustrating when you look at a car that you think may be half decent only to find out every panel needs the works.. I prefer doing this metal work over any part of the job but sometimes it makes me feel bad for the customers.

This car is actually going to be all stock, however I do believe he is adding the continental kit.

And here is a picture of how this car started.

We have re-bodied a few Camaro's, Impala, Lemans and a few others but this is the first one we had to take down this far to get to good metal, or in this case, almost no metal.
Re-bodying these older cars is one of my favorite things to do, it's nice to take a car from nothing and turn it into something.
