What's the best way to install the tail lights so they don't leak?!!??help please!!!!!

As you may have noticed; those repro tail light gaskets suck.
You basically have 2 options;
1) use black RTV around the edge of the lense, attach the gasket, then put RTV around the outside of the gasket and install into the car.
That way it is sealed against the lense and the car body.
2) make your own gasket with different material. I know one guy that used caulk backing foam.
