Hi all,

I have a 1967 Camaro that I have had since I was 15 that I have been working on for the last 3 years. I have spent a good amount of time and money on this car trying to create a modern street machine. Just recently I was offered a promotion at work that will take me to Europe for 2-5 years. I now need to make a decision to either keep or sell my car. The car is almost done (in paint and needs a month of finishing touches before it can go to interior) and I will need to put it in a storage unit to work on and finish the mechanicals. Once it is completed, there will be an ongoing cost to store it while I am overseas of ~450.00/mo. Not sure of what I could even ask for the car. Take a look at the build and let me know what I should potentially sell this thing for...

The build is as follows:

1967 RS Camaro
TCI Front Clip/Rear 4 Link
Hydratech brake assist
Rack and pinion steering
Willwood disk brakes all the way around
LS3 Crate 480 hp
Tremec 6 speed w/hydraulic clutch
Ricks Vaporworxx Tank
18 and 19 inch Rushforth Rated X wheels (brushed center, polished lip)
ISIS Multiplex wiring system with touch screen
Stereo with Pioneer double din, separates in front and back, 2 amplifiers, 10 inch subwoofer
Vintage air Gen IV system

Lots of other finishing items including:
Momo race steering wheel
Ididit column
RingBrothers door handles
Fessler hood/trunk hinges
Fessler LED tail lights
Blackbird Bi-Xenon headlights
Procar Scat front seats
New Glass
New Chrome
Everything is new!

It would be a cold day before I got a car that far along, and sold it. Now, on the other hand, if someone offered you way more than it's worth (way more), it would be a consideration. If you were strapped for money, again, a consideration. but I think I'd find a respectable place to store it, and finish it when I got back. Or, if not too much money take it with you. Work on it abroad. Car just looks nice to leave it... Just my .02

Ditto, you'd just end up regretting it..you had the car for too long just to let it go.

This is just me, but I'd think that's crazy to get so far to bail on it. At least for me at this point in my life, my pursuit of money it to build my dream cars (no family or other distractions in my life to spend money on). I've been offered opportunities to get big money, but at the expense of relocating and losing my setup, or going for a busier job that won't allow me the time to build my cars. No matter what you do, you'll lose money at this point. Was it homebuilt or shop built? If it's shop built, I'd have the shop store it and take their time building it, maybe see about the feasibility of exporting it temporarily while in Europe (but be sure to bring it back home, we're losing too many American cars to foreign countries as it is!).

Sounds like you're getting ripped off for $450 a month for storage...

Indeed. If nothing else, compare the $450 a month versus the cost of shipping it to where you're at, and work on it over there.
I've never rented a storage locker big enough for a car, but I'd think that if the going rate where you live is legitimately $450 a month, it would be cheaper in the long run to ship it to an area where the cost of living is much more reasonable and store it there. That's a wicked car. Don't sell it.

Thanks to all for the input. I definitely love this car and my first instinct has always been to keep it. Just considering options and was questioning spending on storage or shipping costs. I know I would take a huge hit if I sold it so the right thing to do is finish it.

I appreciate the posts. When I finish it I will post some pics and revive this thread.

This is the correct answer. Thank you.

daaaaamn.. you are SO close!!

hard ass decision.. I would just keep it cause of how close it is.. OR hire a coachbuilder to finish it.. drive it to a place cheaper to store.. then come back and rock out.

Im not sure how long its going to be stored but if its going to be 2 years, just find a guy to finish the bodywork on it. The cost might be about a wash and you know these guys take forever. Also $450/month is absurd. I was paying $50/month to store my Nova a few years ago.

I seem to easily find $100-150 a month around here. But the cost to have it restored and finished would be less than the bath you'd take by selling it as a project. As is I'd imagine it to be worth $15-20k. Done it would be a $40k car the way it's headed. If it costs $10-15k to finish it, you'd be money ahead even doing it that way, if it is just paint and reassembly.

OK, we've settled it for you.... just keep it. lol In the end it's your choice at least you know how we feel. Good luck on your decision.

Just an FYI, I'm paying $140 per month for a 10x25 to store a car and parts for my build.

I wish storage was cheap around here. I live in the SF Bay Area and cost of living is crazy. In addition to the expensive rental units (I have been looking at 10x20 units), most of the storage places do not allow cars to be stored indoors because of insurance reasons. I assume the increases insurance premiums are directly related to the high cost of the units.

Why store it in the bay area? Because you won't be living near there by definition. Find someplace out by Stockton or Lodi where land (and storage) is cheap.
