I am looking at a camaro that is for sale that has had a lot of work done to make in into a pro-touring restomod car.
There is a valid clean title with the car but there is no cowl tag on the firewall!
I asked it maybe it had been put with any documentation on the car but there is not documents on the car either.
Aparently the car was built by some company then sold with out all of the above info to the owner that sold it to a dealer.
Would you be concerned about the car not having a cowl tag?
Dealer is selling as a basic Camaro only.
Thanks

That's something you would need to ask your TXDMV. If you don't intend to drive it on the street, and make it a trailer racer, then no problem. But if you plan to drive it on the street, requiring registration, and insurance, no cowl tag may fail DMV inspection. I've heard of scenarios when you fail DMV inspection you're then referred to the police for inspection to check the car over to determine if anything is stolen. Never trust what the dealer is telling you, under any circumstances, their priority is making the sale. It is my personal opinion that dealers wash dirty titles through DMV on a regular basis. Once sold, the car is your problem, not the dealers. If DMV says its not a problem, then go for it.

If you are talking about the cowl tag on the face of firewall it should not be a problem since it does not contain VIN information. If however you are referring to the VIN plate at the base of windshield then you have a problem and would need to talk to your DMV.

Not legal in Oklahoma. Check all the other VIN locations, not uncommon to get a new VIN issued to an older vehicle if their is none available. Check with DMV if VIN is issued or original. Original numbers if found override issued VIN. People have built cars and had them taken away if the alternative VIN numbers are found and checked. I know of one case where the body shop noticed the frame number was different than the windshield on an issued title. Police found other numbers. Vehicle was stolen and awarded to original titled owner. Be careful and good luck.

I am talking about the tag that was on the firewall.
The VIN at the base of the window still exists.

The cowl tag has no vin info on it, just the trim level and colors the car left the factory with. It would be a big deal if it was some rare model or numbers matching car.
There's a partial/covert vin under the cowl vent.

VIN #s are not located on the cowl tag.
Cowl tags and VIN #s are two separated things. There shouldn't be any legal issues buying the car without the cowl tag. Either way, all the cowl tag info is worthless at this point. Assuming the car has been altered to a degree that it cannot be restored to its original state.

Agree with everyone else. I wish my builder would have returned the tag to me but it was removed for smoothing and never made it back to me. Luckily I have some pictures to refer to just for fun. At least the VIN plate (riveted inside the driver's door opening on a '67) never left the car, that's the important one.
