I was wondering if someone knew the difference in backspacing between the 2nd and 3rd gen fbodies. Im looking at wheels that are made for the 3rd gen, but i wanna know if they tuck in or stick out compared to the 2nd. I know the bolt patterns the same im just trying to figure out how much room i got. Also how wide of tires can i fit in the backwithout tubbing. Also how wide of front tires can i fit without taking out the inner fender wells? thanx in advance.

dont know, but word of caution on choosing wheels for the rear. if you are using a factory rear disc set up on your 79, with the parking brake working, the back spacing is not the same as a drum brake rear end. the cabel gets in the way on the passenger or drivers side, i cant remember right off hand.

Depends on the width size of the rim. Im running 17x9.5 with a 6" bs on our 84 and those same rims would fit the 70 with a 1/2" spacer. T/A's may be different as we have found in some cases before.

I have a 79 TA that has the factory 4 wheel disc brakes...soon to be upgraded to a Baer kit (once body work is done). I had TT2s on it and pulled them off and sold them. I want something different. Anyway. I was running 17 x 9.5's all around with a 5 inch bs and they just barely fit. I think I would go to 5.5 inch if I were running the stock brakes and ride height. If you were to lower the car and put on Baers, like I am, I would go to 6 inches. Measure it though. Dont just take my word for it. It all depends on what you are going to do with it.

im probably gonna do baers as well, what size tires are you running front and back? and did ya have to do any other mods other than the backspacing? these are the wheels i was looking at for it, id have to see what they could do bout backspacing. Heres also a pic of them photochopped on a 79 T/A

Wow those are really cool. What are they? The tires I had were the P275/40ZR-17 98W. I don't have the rims anymore though. I want to use something unique.

I fit 19x10's with 275/35/19's up front on my 71 Camaro, just got the driver side wheel on this week. I have 3/8" clearance to the backside of the LCA, the same turning radius as a 3rd Gen F-body, and the outer edge of the tire is about 1 5/8" inside the outer edge of the fender lip. If I had a Bird I could have easily fit 19x11's with 295's or 305's...

I'll get some pics posted soon (as soon as son finds camera).

ill probably go with 17x9.5 with 6" BS(that way when i switch to like baers or something it will clear) with 275/40R17 Front & Back

I've got ROH Wheels on my '01 SS. They're nice wheels, plus-- They're cheap (always a plus), good quality and the black ice finish is something no other wheel manufacturer has. I'm almost positive they can't be made with a custom offset, becasue they're a single piece wheel, basically an off the shelf wheel. Only their 3 piece wheels can be made with custom b/s, if I'm not mistaken. One of our sponsors, Speed Inc. (Ls1speed.com) carries the full line of ROH Wheels.
