Hello PT members, vendors and guest. My name is Glen and my project is a 68 Camaro. (First time poster so be gentle)

I am seeking help from those with firsthand experience, in the know, or from vendors on wheel sizing and any vendors who supply a particular style wheel.

I have a 68 Camaro, AME GT Sport front subframe, Tri 4 bar rear subframe and DSE mini tubs. I ordered the Tri 4 bar rear with a housing width of 49.125”. I have calculated my WMS as 54.691” using axle housing width of 49.125”+ 5” for brake offset (2.5+2.5 Strange axles) + brake rotor hat thickness (Kore3 Corvette Z06) of 0.566” (0.283 + 0.283) = 54.691”. Correct? Or have I fundamentally missed something?

AME recommends 295/35R18 on 18x11 with 4.75” BS, bulge width would be 68.875”. I would like to reduce the wheel size by 1” to 18x10 to give myself a little more clearance. Therefore, if I reduce wheel width by 1”, I must take off 0.5” from the BS to keep the wheel centered, BS would now be 4.25”. Using Pilot Sport tires this should give me a section width around 11.5”?

Happy to go with AMEs recommendation for the front wheel width of 18x8, 5.25 BS & 245/35R18 unless those in the know say to go differently, however I don’t want any rubbing or contact issues.

Additional info: front brakes are Kore3 supplied Z06 6 piston caliper, 14” rotor, overall diameter with caliper is 15.84”. C6 hub register diameter for the wheel will be the exact same as the Corvette hub, 70.3mm [2.768”].Protrusion of caliper past WMS is 1.69”, hub length past WMS approx. 0.500”, any corrections required so far?

Wheel design. I am looking for a timeless 10 spoke wheel design. I know of; Rushforth Rated X (cost?), Forgeline ZX3P ($5,500), Billet Specialties Laguna (previously ‘Spline’? $3200), Code510.com Forged Union "Laguna" Wheels, (cost $3000). (Does anyone have any experience with these wheels or the Code 510 Company?) what else is out there in similar style/design?

Obviously the Forgeline would be the go but that is stretching my budget to the max. Happy for any vender or member to contact me with suggestions as I need to place the order this week, I need the wheels in less than 6 weeks if possible.

I cannot mock any of this up as the car is in one country and my chassis is packed in a shipping container here in the US so if you can review my info that would be great. Any help would be appreciated.

From personal experience, a 68 Camaro with DSE mini-tubs will easily accept an 18x12 wheel with a 335 tire. It will also take an 18x10 275 front but maybe not with the AME subframe. The bare housing measurement is meaningless, what you need is the EXACT WMS to WMS measurement even if you have to temporaily assemble the rear end and brakes to get it. Don't guess or calculate because the WMS measurement is critical for proper wheel fitment. For example, I'm running DSE mini-tubs and Forgeline WC3 18x12 5.5" back space with a 57" WMS to WMS Moser 9" floater. I recommend you take Mark up on his offer, Forgeline is great to work with and will make you the exact wheel you need!

Thank you JDMAN for the kind words and your input. Guys like you that have the personal experience are a true benefit to this forum.

Glen, JDMAN is correct. Most 68 Camaros with the DSE mini tubs can hold an 18x12 with the 335 tire in the rear and a 275 tire in the front.

I have several AME drawings on file and I have reviewed them. I would agree that you should temporarily put the rear end together with the brakes and verify the WMS to WMS dimensions. When I reviewed the AME drawings and compared them to your estimated numbers, my calculations were about .375" different. This could just be flange thickness differences. Either way, it is still a good idea to verify before ordering a set of wheels.

I will be happy to go over the dimension I have anytime.

Thank you
Mark

Glen:

I am unable to confirm what wheel measurements you need for your Camaro. However, I do have experience with the Third Generation Camaros, especially the 1LE's with stock fenders and C4 Corvettes with stock and flared fenders.

I have had great success with Forgeline Wheels and their staff is great to work with. I have bought 7 sets of wheels from Forgeline over a period of 20 years. You will never be disappointed with their wheels. Don't try to save a few bucks and go with a non-Forgeline wheel because you will regret it in the long run.

Forgeline wheels are a great quality wheel and they look bitchin on my cars.

Thanks to Mark at Forgeline, JDMAN and Kenny for their input, very much appreciated.

I can’t assemble the rear or any other components as it is all packed in a container ready for shipment.

I honestly thought I would get either a confirmation, or a correction response from an owner, vendor or shop that has built up a 67 or 68 Camaro with the same housing width. AME offers three widths for their GT rear chassis, mine is not a one off custom width, it is one of their off the shelf widths for the 67-69 application. It seems to have been done hundreds of times across the country. Strange…..

I used the supplied measurements from Tobin at Kore3 (awesome to deal with), Brock at AME (also fantastic) and dimension from Strange so I was relatively comfortable I was pretty darn close. Hence why I also went to an 18x10 size for a little bit of ‘fat’. I was not after the widest wheel combo I can squeeze under there.

Ultimately I asked for input from “those in the know” and from vendors, which I got. If they say you can’t “calculate” the WMS to WMS, you have to build the rear up and measure then so be it. I will take that advice on and leave the US without wheels. Bummer…

Many thanks to all the US companies I purchased products from for my project, thanks to; PSI, AME, KORE3, Aeromotive, Classic Industries, Year One, Firewheel, Summit, PACE Performance, TICK Performance, Quick Performance and to the others I forget.

Yep, you Americans are blessed with endless parts, shops, suppliers and vendors. Thanks for a great three and a half years in the US.
Glen
