Recent grandparenthood requires a car with a usable back seat. Ford Fairmonts look good to me and I am hoping to build a pro-touring Fairmont with IRS. It seems as if the Cobra IRS will fit without too much trouble, but they are expensive and hard to come by. Does anyone have any experience putting the IRS from a Thunderbird or Lincoln Mark VIII in a Fairmont?

AWESOME!!! I love the idea, did some digging. I find 99-04 Cobra IRS units between $400-600. The T-bird IRS I believe will not be a bolt-in. For the few hundred extra $ you'll spend on a Cobra IRS it will be worth the time/pain saved. I have the Cobra IRS under both of my 66 Mustangs.

The SN-95 chassis covers all Mustangs from 1994 through 2004. This particular chassis is, more or less, a carryover from the 1979 Ford Fairmont.
