I have a 1972 Pontiac Le Mans sedan and I was just wondering Should I pro tour it

I like 4-doors but i'm probably the odd ball in that department

Why not? You can mildly pro-tour it relatively inexpensively and dramatically improve the way it rides. I say go for it.

There are a couple Pro-touring 4 doors out there. Nothing wrong with it. Hell I am working on the ultimate 4 door, a station wagon.

I love me some wagons, and the occasional 4 door muscle car! They're dirt cheap because it seems nobody wants them, and that makes them enticing enough to look past the fact that they're a 4 door or a wagon. lol

MY only problem with actually buying one and putting any amount of money into upgrades would be......resale. People sell them so cheap for a reason, and I'd hate to get stuck with something that I had way too much money into that I would never see again. Buyers for 4 doors and wagons are definitely few and far between!

If you've got a wife, kids and a dog and like to go on cruises, hot rod around and hit events, 4 Door/wagon is the way to go! I can't imagine cramming them all into my Road Runner!

If I had the space one of the projects that I would like to add is a full size wagon. I would like to make kind of a pro/grand touring set up. Style it pro touring with upgraded handling just making sure it has AC, cruise control, and a nice enough ride to road trip loaded up with family or friends.

New stiffer springs, bushings, and good brakes will go a long way towards making it more fun and safer to drive.

Do whatever you enjoy, but I'd have to throw some caution in like Josue. If you're passionate about it, and you want it, do it. If you're just doing it with the idea that it's not a definite, 100% keeper, I'd be leery about investing too much money into it as you'll never recover it, it's hard with a 2 door sometimes, it'll be totally impossible with a 4 door. Is this a car you've had for awhile? I know down here you can get a Lemans 2 door for very cheap to build. But there are cool 4 doors out there. I've always wanted to build up a 4 door hardtop say, 66 Chevelle, 57 Chevy, or 62 Impala as a hot rod.

Deb Farrington beats the heck out of her wagon at the PT events.. And her son Sam is building a 4-door Chevelle too! I love wagons, and trees nothing wrong with the bigger cars.
Sure they weigh more and they have longer wheelbases but I think they're way cooler ;)

Yep, what Dale said! Although, 64-67 A-body four doors, wagons and two doors all have the same wheelbase. SNAP!

Longer wheel base would make it handle better then its 2door counterpart correct despite the extra weight?

just like a 70-72 monte shall handle better then exact equipped chevelle/cutlass/gto/skylark?

Ok, just thought that was what you were hinting,
I just thought longer wheelbase added stability, which traded out for maneuverability

It's a 1972 Lemans so what would be valuable to sell on the car if I was to gut it and rebuild

Schwartz Performance
09-20-2014, 07:17 AM
Nah I was hinting at the opposite, but saying I think they're cooler than the 2 doors. The later Chevelles are 112" wheelbase as opposed to the 64-67 at 115". The later Chevelle wagons and 4 doors were 116" wheelbase.
Stability is better, sure, but there's more chassis flex, added weight, and reduced agility around small autocross courses.
However, our 65 Tempest has proven that a 115" wheelbases can compete with 100" wheelbase Vettes ;)
It's all relative.

I live in the country side of northern canada. It's north of Toronto but we don't live in igloos so being out in the boonies like this there are no real autox courses around it would just be a fun car for the twisty roads around

Also being an undesired car nobody is really gonna get mad for me cutting it up. By the way how do you feel about Japanese motors?

Some of the smaller random parts may be valuable, like dash pieces, trim, etc.

Japanese motors? Oh please don't!!
Nah do what you want.. But you'll need some torque to get that boat out of the water ;)

wagons are boxed from what ive seen. that car should be a 350 pontiac right? cheapest option is build it or drop in a ls1/sbc

If we lived down under most of us would own 4 doors.

My first street/drag car was a 4 door Nova back in the realy 90's. It ran high 11s and was my daily driver. It was a whole lot of fun to put the whoopin on the Fox bodies , Irocs, Trans Ams, and corvettes of the day, a real sleeper and attitude adjuster. :) .

My car has 5 doors. The more the merrier right? Lol! The G bodies (except the El Camino) all have the same as a 1st gen Camaro 108" wheelbase 4 door, Wagon or 2 door. 68-74 Novas have the same 110" wheelbase, 4 door or not. I'm not up to speed on the A bodies though. With a roll cage, all sorts of chassis bracing and relatively heavy wheels my wagon weighs 3550 with a small block with iron heads. Not too bad for a wagon I suppose. You can gut the rear doors on your car to save some weight, glass hood, glass trunk lid, etc. if you're concerned about that sort of thing. In the end it doesn't matter how many doors it has, only thing that does matter is how it performs.

I couldn't get this idea out of my head so I put it on paper. It came out so nice I'd build it just for the fun of it if I had the money to have a few cars. 4 race bucket seats, 4- 5 pt harnesses, and one heck of an autocross ride along machine.

I think that 66-67 novas, Chevelles, and lemans are the only 4 doors I can get behind if it isnt a wagon..

why?

cause they look like bigger cars (like an Impala) family cruisers that the roofline didnt get all bugged out due to the extra doors.. but a car like a 71 chevelle.. look HORRIBLE with 4 doors..

but thats my opinion.. take it as such.

:headbang::headbang:

Coolest 4 door Chevy I've seen yet was a 66 Hard Top Impala. Put all 4 windows down and it's open air cruising. Next to that would be a suicide door hard top convertible 4 door Lincoln from the mid 60's.

Thanks. Someone on here took the idea and sort of copied it with a white 4 door Nova they picked up. Not sure if it ever got finished tho'. I'm partial to the yellow myself.

It cool so see some support for us more-door guys! Here's my budget ’73 with a carb’d 5.3, TSP224R and a performance/resto build up. I just joined Protouring last week cause I want to start turning her into a street bruiser/protouring/drag fun machine. On a budget of course!

Over the winter I will be going EFI, cramming some 3.73+posi, subframe connectors and hopefully ditch the Cragar 14s in favor of C5 rolling stock in black or gunmetal.

I semi pro-toured my 67 4 door galaxie that my grandfather bought new, mainly because I wanted to use it. 10k miles in the year since I started it. Next: take apart, powdercoat the frame, make some small changes, then put back together.

Also not happy with the wheel vintinque wheels, so probably going with 17s. Maybe one of the new Weld wheel designs like the S75B.
