Stock appearing. Redline Gauge http://www.redlinegaugeworks.com/ Custom Gauges using a reproduction factory bezel. The temperature and oil pressure are factory Stewart Warner. Voltmeter and Fuel are custom, speedo is custom and calibrated, tach is aftermarket Stewart Warner 8k tach refaced to appear stock, colored/lettered with redline of my choosing. Factory voltage regulator swapped to solid state. Set up to use the factory one plug harness connection with all the indicator lights functional. I am considering backlighting the tach with a large shift light, or just putting one inside an AC vent. The only deviation from stock appearance on the dash will be the push to start button in place of the ignition key. That is on the underside inset in the lower dash pad, so it will not stick out. I even have a factory four speed console and boot that fit over the T56 six speed. I swapped the shifter ball to an old cue ball style so it looks much like an old four speed.

Antique Auto Radio will be coming out with a drop in replacement head unit that will appear factory for my car later this year. This year Barracuda comes with an unusual thumb dial radio which is quite cool. I can easily set it up with Bluetooth for my phone, music, and etcetera; it also has RCA outs if I want to run a sub or amp. The '68-'69 Barracuda radio is similar to other "A" body cars, but has unique brackets, so I need to make sure they will offer the option. I may just send my factory AM radio to Ward's and have them convert the innards so I can keep the simpler look of the AM radio with the "Solid State by Plymouth" lettering on the face.
Here is the "B" body version from Antique Auto which is similar: http://www.radiosforoldcars.com/newradiomoparB68.htm

The bezels are 3D printed out of plastic on a MakerBot 3d printer and then epoxied to the dash which was fiber glassed to fill in the factory holes. and I have a bunch of pictures on a post on my blog @ http://chevellenv.com/2014/07/custom-dash-progress/

Have at it...keep in mind that I have somewhere in the neighborhood of about 120+ hours in this dash project so far, and still have a lot of other small bezels to make (A/C controls, A/C vents, etc...)...

I had to do a lot of fiberglass work on the dash and getting the correct curvature i wanted, digitizing the dash on a CNC and learning soildworks to model the dash curve and all the bezels, and print and test the parts multiple times until I was happy with the final print and fit of the parts.

so be prepared to spend some time on it.....but it will be worth it... :)

I'm thinking of switching to Speed Hut also. Having a hard time finding a six gauge set that I can get matching fuel pressure and boost pressure. I also want them backlit as I have Auto Meter now and might as well have no gauges at night - they are so hard to read with the side lighted faces. I can get all 8 Speed Hut gauges for under $800

I don't have any good pictures of them at the moment but I like the ability to set warning points for the gauge to flash red, record parameters onto an SD card and instantly change the color of the gauges is just amazing. car_designer
03-11-2015, 05:29 PM
If you're asking me, it is a combination of things.

The main reason is that last summer I was having overheating issues with my Cutlass was keeping a close eye on the temp gauge. I realised that with the size of the gauges I got (biggest I could fit) the numbers on the quad gauge were too small to easily read while driving at night. My choice of blue backlighting probably didn't help.

Second, I've had some technical issues with the speedometer. But I'm going to look into getting them fixed through the warranty.

I put the New Vintage 69 series gauges in a 70-78 Camaro covan bezel I textured. I also used the led's that came with the new vintage kit and relocated them in the panel for a stealth look

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/04/20140423192249_zpse8126f0a-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/04/20140423192255_zps627bc73d-1.jpg

I installed my lens and wired up my led's. I basically cut up the lens from my new vintage kit for my install.

For the turn signals I drilled holes in the bezel and used nylon spacers to mount the led's from behind the arrow lens . I hot glued the lens first then the spacer...it's really bright lol

I wrapped tape around it to diffuse the light from lighting up the spacer

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/04/20140424185501_zpsf8937f91-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/04/20140424203546_zpsa466c24f-1.jpg

The lens actually has a texture face and blends in with the bezel when the led's aren't on...pretty low key

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/04/20140424203427_zpsb7a2f555-1.jpg

One thing I did notice was that my colors were reversed on the check engine and brake warning. I used the housing supplied by new vintage and the led's were already glued in. my kit came with a vertical lens and they sent me a horizontal lens free of charge so I guess there was a different layout between the two ....oh well it still looks pretty good. I since relocated the led's and the brake light is red and the check engine is amber now

Thanks, they look a lot better in person. It's hard to visualize with their online simulator, but they're definitely nice high-end pieces. As far as the logos, I asked them about that directly. They said due to copyright issues, they couldn't have these original emblems on their page, but they have a box to upload whatever logos you want. So I Google imaged this one, and placed it on with their builder. Pretty simple to do.

I decided to go with a carbon fiber dash insert from Classic Dash. Still researching which gauges, but top of the list right now are the New Vision's pictured below (Photoshopped mock-up). I like the center spin gauges, and the blue detail... my '69 Camaro is LeMans Blue. Plus the gauges light up blue. Idiot lights have to be figured out, but worse case is the LED panel lights shown.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/04/DKDPopulatedCFDash05_zpsduuqzmz0-1.jpg

I think the dash insert and gauges will go nicely with my MOMO wheel, and my intention is to selectively use carbon fiber on the dash and restored OEM console to tie it all together. Got the insert last week, hope to decide on the gauges this week so I can get them installed soon.

Looks like SpeedHut is the only manufacturer that actually lets you design your own gauges. I might've considered Auto Meter but I'm not nuts about their fonts, they seem to be crammed. Originally my heart was set on a aluminum grey gauge face, and of course New Vision CFR only comes in black although they supposedly offer some custom work. I called, waiting for a call back.

Speed Hut let's you pick the face color, the font and tick color and style, the nighttime color, the pointer color, the center button. Their big gauges are a strange size, 4-1/4" hole bore. Classic dash uses a 4-1/2" bore size. Speed Huts gps speedo can also have the directional and hi-beam leds built in.

A little more research.

Since, I am running the Holley HP EFI Compter on my 1989 Corvette, I thought about going with the Holley Digital Display. I decided not to because the intent was to get away from the OEM Digital Instruments and get back to real analog gauges so I went with Speedhut because you can customize the gauge to your specs. without any additional cost. Also, I had the Corvette Logo added to my GPS driven Speedometer, and the Tach. The custom dash work was designed and fabricated by JCG Restoration and Custom in Oxnard, CA

Was wondering about toeing in the idiot lights, for those of you with these newer electronic gauges, does the gauge light up when fuel is low or water temp is very high?

Kenny, that's a nice looking setup above.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, I Speedhut does offer the idiot lights on either some or all of their gauges. I elected to not have any idiot lights. I wanted to keep it simple.

The thing I like about SpeedHut is the various customizing options. I roughed up a couple of approaches in Photoshop to see the overall look. In the end, I opted for their white face with black markings since my Camaro is LeMans Blue with white interior and white hockey stripes. Also added a Camaro script in the two main gauges along with a color band redline on the tach. The nighttime color of the gauge faces was spec'd as light blue (see comment below).

Here's a shot while trial fitting the insert. This is what I see through the steering wheel while driving. Its a big improvement on the stock layout. I might think about tweaking the angle of the two lowest gauges, but I'm not having a problem.

Just recently got this installed, I have one minor gremlin to iron out... its the lights on background color for the gauges. I may have a bad inverter because when I turn on the lights, the pointers all glow nice and red, but the white face is supposed to be blue and its not lighting up at all. Hope to tackle that tomorrow. Calibrating the gas tank was challenging, but I got it done. Also reset the GPS speedo odometer to read what was on my original speedometer because MASS DMV checks your mileage once a year at inspection time. Wouldn't look good if I had next to nothing on the odometer when they have a historical record on file.

I decided that everybody and his mother seems to have the OEM woodgrain trim on their '69 SS cars, so thats why I went with the carbon fiber look. I had everything dipped in the most realistic pattern we could find. That included the console trim panels and the soon to be installed grab bar pane that goes above the glove box. I think it ties tit all together and I've received many compliments at last weeks cruise night.

Currently installed NVU 68 CAMARO gauge set.
Im setting up for occasional auto cross days and have installed both oil cooler with temp sensor and trans cooler with temp sensors but debating on where to cleanly mount up two more gauges. Overall keeping the stockish look of the interior and dont want out of place gauges to drown out the simplicty and clean look of the factory dash.
Has any one set up the coolant temp gauge on a multi pole switch to be able to toggle between all three sources?

I haven't installed any "idiot" lights yet but I'm going to use the 12mm dash panel lights pictured below for at least the Emergency Brake and the Generator. Any working idiot light needs a sending device. In truth, we add analog gauges because idiot lights are very often useless. My SpeedHut GPS speedo... I ordered it with built in directional and high beam leds. They are tiny, but they are right in front of me not out of sight. The SpeedHut fuel gauge has a built in low fuel led so when you calibrate the tank and set empty & full parameters the gauge will light up before it goes empty... supposedly ar 1/8th tank.

The 12mm directional arrow units draw so little current that you could drive both the speedo directional and the somewhat larger and more graphic 12mm by simply tapping into the directional lines. Same goes for brights. I started off thinking I needed a slew of indicators, but I've been driving with this for two weeks and I'm having second thoughts about some of the indicators. The second image below shows a populated insert. I may actually put a Bluetooth capable radio in the "normal" position and use the left lower side for switches. I removed the cigarette lighter already and put in a dual port USB device that works great.

I went with the Carbon Fiber Autometer gauges. Love 'em. Only thing I had to mod was turn signal lights - used small leds and drilled them into the top of the speedo and tack housing. Never even notice they are there unless you are looking for them. Still under construction, but about ready to turn over to the upholstery shop.

Did anyone count up the different brand of gauges and see which brand was the most popular? Just curious. I think Speedhut may be the most popular brand.

I saw Speedhut mentioned, ordered 3 gauges. They have a large number of options available for many of the features.
Type of bezel, needle, face colors, number fonts, sizes, etc. You can get a custom label on the face.
I haven't made a final decision on the dash they will go in. Speedo is GPS. Quarter mile, 60 foot, other performance can be measured. Tach has adj red line and shift points.
