View Full Version : Working on a custom belt grinder, I need some DC motor advice

I am working on building more tools for my build, I am getting to the end of my Harbor Freight Bead roller build. I am now starting the plans for my belt grinder. Where I excel in metal fab skills, I am shamefully lacking in electrical knowledge. I say shamefully because my father was a career lineman for Pennsylvania Power and Light. I should know this stuff, but I don't. I am looking for some advice with the motor selection. I want to do a 2 HP DC motor with a motor control box, I want the rapid metal removal rate. I need the power and I want the speed control. I have NO idea what I am looking for as far as feeder voltages, or any of that sort. I tried to talk to a local place but i got a sales pitch instead of guidance. I have been looking on Ebay, but as I have no idea what I am looking for its pointless. Depending on how this turns out I may make an extra one to sell, as I already have people asking for a HF bead roller. I really appreciate the help, I am out of my league on this one.

Some good info in here. Sounds like ebay is a good place to find a motor and controller:

I havent posted any of the build yet, I will do it all when I am done. I have looked at the DC motors from treadmills, but I really dont know if that will work. What is the difference between a treadmill DC motor and a Beldor 56c frame DC motor?

I think that controller will work with any DC motor that is 2 hp or less. The controller and connection info are the most useful parts of that article.

Just a little general info.
A true American made motor such as Baldor may be all ball bearing & have an under or properly rated hp. May outlive you. Frame is attachment type, etc ,not motor rating.
Most Chinese motors are under rated & don't have the torque you'd expect.
What size / type belt sander are you planning on? By the way ,I just got an old 2 hp baldor motor for free & a shopsmith 8 by 48" sanding attachment that needs something to power it . Hmmmm.

Forget the DC variable speed motors. Go read what Burr King and others are doing with 3 Phase 240 VAC motors with Inverter drives. There are inexpensive inverters that make regular 3 Phase motors variable speed. You can get conversion kits for old belt grinders that had the old DC drive technology... or learn about it and buy the parts and build your own... WAY Better.

I am bailing on building a belt sander build, I did some research and by the time I gathered the materials and parts I would be over 700.00 into it, not including all the machine and fab time. I am instead going to go with an idea that worked in school when we used to notch thin walled tube for headers and such. I am going to just start with a small horizontal mill and go from there. I got this little guy on Craigslist for scrap value. Everything moves free and it spins free. I need to clean it up and do some work. I will post updates as I go, but in the fab forum, where it will be more useful.
This is the mill, it is a Kent Owens 1 M mill.
