For months now I have wanted to install a 69 Camaro spoiler on my car. But after seeing Dirk Vanzuuk's Camaro I want a airdam like his. My question is how would I mount something like this? Would it have some kind of hinge off the subframe or what? Also what kind of metal would I make it out of. Any ideas and all ideas are wanted.
A picture of Dirk's car can be found here. https://www.pro-touring.com/forum_main.htm

whould something like this work for you? see picture...I have several left.
If you would like a metal type like Vanzuuk's, you can make one out of .038" AL and it mounts to the radiator support or lower bumper.

I think This (https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/vbgarage.php?do=getimage&id=1242) is the pic you wanted...

Im partial to the whole Heim joint, turbuckle stile, Like on his, He has said he wishes they were more angled. but a flange and rivets would work. you could use regular aluminium or carbon fiber if you can find someone with fab skills.

With exception to the links, Looks like a stock spoiler made from aluminum rather than a stock plastic one. It just stands out because its bright. Here is a pic of Rupp's Camaro for comparison.

Andy, My spoiler is just an extension of the stock one, I cut the factory spoiler down and bolted mine to it.This actually worked out well because the plastic has a little give if you bottom out. The supports dont really adjust because of the way the piece angles in the middle. You could make an adjustable one if it split in the middle or was one flat piece with a hinge. There is another rod underneath that goes to the crossmember, you can bounce the car up and down by stepping on the spoiler.
I have the paper pattern if you need it.
I am making one for the back that will be adjustable.
I honestly just did the spoiler for looks but the extra width and depth make a difference, the thing actually works. People either love it or hate it, just like the car and the owner.

Also the aluminum is scuffed left to right with a scuff pad. A little wd 40 and nothing sticks to it,the bugs come right off with the hose. Painted spoilers get chipped up real fast .

Thanks for the help guys. I was thinking of making one out of flat aluminum and have a hing mount on the radiator support with some adjustible links. Also should I have it split in the middle and kinda direct air to the sides are would a flat one be ok.

Also if I went with flat aluminum what could be done to add rigidity to the airdam.

Bead rolls....maybe triangle brackets on the back of it, maybe aluminum round rod across the back of it! just thinking out loud

Andrew you can bounce my car up and down by putting your foot on the spoiler, thats pretty rigid. Steevo will bare witness to that.

Andrew
if you take Mr quicks spoiler and trim the sides like the black spoiler above, then add an aluminum extention to the front it would look sick. You could make slots so you could slide the extention up or down by loosening the bolts.

I'd like to have something like Dirk's spoiler on my El Camino. Have any problems with speed bumps, though?
Anyone have any photos of a similar set-up on an A-Body?
vanzuuk1

Speed bumps are not a problem, you can see the spoiler in action at steevos site,
http://homepage.mac.com/streetfytr/iMovieTheater36.html, or go to multimedia/"hey stop that guy". Note that even with all that "aero grip" the car still needs a little front suspension work!

Ok so I think I want to make a flat aluminum airdam, I plan to mount it off of the radiator support and will maby add a bar to help support the load if needed. Where could I buy a hing and the adjustible links for this type of application. And how thick shold the aluminum be.

Are their braces similar to what you used. Also I see .063" is how thick their spoilers are, I am guessing that would be way more than I would ever need.

I used their braces and hardware but i bought 1/4 - 20 stainless bolts at a hardware store cause I am a freak and wanted stainless. I didnt measure my aluminum but its no thicker than 1/8th. I just grabbed some scrap and started 'cuttin. There is silver craft paper that is awesome for mockups, cuts nice with an exacto knife.Get it perfect in paper first.
I glad you guys like it , I thought I would be the only one that liked it.
I stopped by gsxrkens house and he gave it a snort of approval, then i knew it was OK .

But what kind of hing should be used. I am going to home depot to look and see what they have but would something for a house function and be strong enough for automotive use.

Looks Baaaad......All business. Looks similar to the spoilers used on the 71 NASCAR Roadrunner.........I'll be looking at that style when I get to that point. The same for the rear.:headbang:

you can poke around for an aluminum hinge or go to mcmaster/carrs website.

That is quite cool, Dirk. Another winter mod! Nice contrast with the dark paint.

If you are worried about the front spoiler being to low, you can mount a strip of plastic (they sell it in rolls from speedway motors, same stuff they pu tonth ebottom of NASCAR front spoilers) along the bottom edge, this way it will just wear away and then easily replaced. Just did the same thing on mine.

After a long wait I have got my car on the lift, and now I am wondering how should I mount the hinge I bought. Could it be just screwd in or should I remove the radiator and drill holes to put bolts in. Also Vanzuuk how tall is your spoiler?

Andrew, you have to thru bolt it, these things could kill someone if they fly off. If you pm me friday I can measure it sat a.m. , its packed into the garage with no room to get in.

Whaddup sugar-cube? It's only water...you won't melt.
Kidding.
You guys getting slammed or what?
Lemme see here, dying hurricane meets cold front, meets nor-easter. Sound familiar? Maybe something like 1991, The Perfect Storm. This doesn't look as bad though.
Not a fun night for me. I spent the evening in a little orange Coast Guard helicopter looking for the guys from Suffolk ANG that had to ditch a big green Air Force helicopter.

Not getting slammed just endlessly doused with rain. The car is all dry and clean under the cover and my garage is tight with a capital T.

Well that's good to hear.
Well I hope this winter you'll be able to get around to making up a template. When I get to that point (seems like a long way off) I'd like to see how it'll look on my ride. Though I am considering a couple of more aggressive options as well.

That spoiler/splitter is freaking COOL, I LIKE IT. Now ya just need to figure out how to move the profile of the whole thing down 2" closer to the ground and the stance will be near perfect.

Here is a quick picture of my spoiler so far. I just cut it to length and clamped it on the car. The braces I have are way to long and will need to be shortened. When finished my spoiler will be painted black to match many other things on the car.

It looks cool. If you paint it black leave the braces natural or scuff them with a scotch brite. I had a painted spoiler and it chipped a lot , maybe powdercoat?
Wait till you drive the car and realize the spoiler actually works!

The braces I have are black, I was thinking about painting them silver or grey. Also my plan was to paint the spoiler epoxy black, I have used it on my control arms, gas tank and wheels and it has not chiped yet.
